34/36... Alonso DNQ.
That's going to sting a bit. I'm sure it'll give him focus for next year.

Still, Rolex 24 and a very good shot at WEC championship and another Le Man title this year to look forward to.

oops.

That's a few million off the viewing figures.

Cockup by McLaren not having a proper backup car, that's mental.

They need to go and run some more races this year to get more practice on speedway courses, after Alonso finishes his WEC season. He'll never win the 500 if that's the only Indycar race he ever does.

I've no doubt he has the skill to win it, but again he's at the whims of the team.

At least in 2017 he was quick out of the box and had a bloody good shot of it. I suppose at least this way he's not trundling around at the back of the pack and taking more of the shine of his previous drive.

It can happen to anyone, in 1995 mighty Team Penske and former Indy 500 winners Emerson Fittipaldi and Al Unser Jnr failed to qualify.

Seriously? I'm more likely to watch it now, with less mentions of "two time world champion feeerrrnandooo alonsoooo"

Fernando's cynical attempts to parachute into championships/races to grab a win for his beloved triple crown does nothing for me.

Eh? So without him this event suddenly became not exciting? Dare I say, majority will watch regardless of whether he's in or not.

This. Who cares about Alonso. To most Indy Car fans he's irrelevant.

McLaren and Alonso take on Indy.

What could possibly go wrong?

I have learnt a lot. I sincerely hope they have too.

Would have been nice to have him in the race, but come on, still got Taku! The closing laps of 2017 were about the most tense I can ever recall being watching a motor race.

Well they might still buy their way into the race, if one of the teams wanted easy money and McLaren were willing to pay...

Bye Fernando.

His and McLarens arrogance has cost them, you can't just rock up 1st year and win.

Great job by Ericsson yesterday.
There are teams with far greater experience who have failed to qualify. Nothing about what McLaren were doing struck me as arrogant.

Zak has confirmed that they will not be buying an entry.

How much longer can Alonso stick it out with McLaren? He doesn't need the money any more, surely it's time to cut ties now and do a full Indycar season in a top team with a decent shot at the 500.

What a run by Pagenaud, that car looked sweet. Just had a look back at the prize fund for the last few years - it fluctuates between $2.5 & $3m for the winner! Just don't ask JR Hildebrand about it...

Apart from turning down andrettis offer for a full season collab with Alonso at the wheel?

He easily qualified with them in his first year, anyone can get caught out but it's much easier with a team with minimal experience (or real spare car)

I didn't think think actually wanted to do a full Indycar season, he just wants to do the Indy 500 for the Triple Crown glory.

Hopefully, never to be achieved smile

Oops, looks like Al might have partied a little too hard after qualifying yesterday.

Not uncommon for Al unfortunately, he’s been battling with alcoholism for years. Shame really
