Was at Castle Combe circuit a few weeks back watching track cars go round the track and drifting etc. It got me wondering what's the purpose of the little square window on the track cars? These track cars always seem to have a small square shaped open window in line with the side of the driver's face, what's the purpose of this? I don't really know anything about track driving so someone enlighten me.

Its the way the window opens for ventilation. This is a result of removing the glass windows and replacing them with shatter proof polycarbonate. It's a safety thing really.

It's not there for itself, it's there as a result of another change that has been made for weight and safety reasons.

Purely ventilation into the car and driver I have Perspex all round in my track car. If you put your hand out a little like I do and cup the air it’s pretty cooling there are some adaptions you can add or buy initially to add that.

It's primarily for ventilation, windows are replaced with polycarbonate and window lifting mechinisms are removed ,track cars are stripped to the bare minimum and can include removal of heater and fan systems , extreme versions will have had all sound deadening and insulation removed . Heat transfer into the passenger area is much greater than in a standard road car . Also used on rally cars they also allow the transfer of paperwork ( roadbooks , time sheets etc ) most fully belted occupants cannot reach open doors to close them and the windows don't open .

Also handy for allowing navigator's notes to transfer out of the car at the most inopportune moment thanks to the draught. Ask me how I know.....
