Monza travel advice

I'm going to a wedding near Como the day after the Italian GP, so will fly out on the Saturday, go to the race on the Sunday, and the wedding on the Monday night.
I want to get back from the race quite sharpish on the Sunday night, so am thinking of driving to a railway station north of Monza and getting a train, as I expect that after the race the vast majority of people will be heading south to Milan.
Has anyone got any on the ground experience which would tell me if this is a good idea.

The first time I went to Monza I was staying in Como. Train straight to Monza, was a fast train from Switzerland... quick journey and then there is a free shuttle bus to the park. In reverse there was about 15 min wait for a bus and the police are very well organised at getting the traffic through to the station. I think we were back in Como for about 6pm.I want to get back from the race quite sharpish on the Sunday night, so am thinking of driving to a railway station north of Monza and getting a train, as I expect that after the race the vast majority of people will be heading south to Milan.

The last time I went a friend drove and we parked nearby (there is a camp/RV site). Straight in, almost no traffic. 20 min walk into the track. In reverse there was almost no traffic.
I think it is helped that
a) a lot of locals go
b) the park has multiple exits so the crowds thin out in different directions
c) the police are very well organised for traffic
d) because you can walk the track after the race, there isn't a mass exodus when it finishes.
There are plenty of unofficial "cabs" touting for business outside the track that will get you back to the station in plenty of time, we've used them twice, they are just locals looking to make a bit of money not at all rapey (having said that I did get in and try the door to see if the child locks were on), lots of people use them, you'll probably share with another couple of people.

The queue for the free shuttle buses can be a bit of a scrum on race day, if they are just buy a "proper" bus ticket from the ticket booth in the station, walk out the front of the station, up the steps to the road and the bus stop is right in front of you, you want the 221 , a lot of cabs (official ones) will stop there too.Gassing Station | Formula 1 | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
