Thoughts with his family and friends. Can't imagine they thought they'd be in this situation again. The man himself is an inspiration. I hope he can come through again.

This says it all. If I was religious I'd be praying for Alex right now.

Reports from Italy say the truck driver swerved sufficiently for the impact to be a glancing blow, rather than head-on. Otherwise one imagines the outcome would have been very much more final.

I won't repeat all that's been said, but he was pretty banged-up and will need some reconstructive surgery if he pulls through. Use Google Translate on this if you'd like to read more: https://www.ansa.it/sito/notizie/sport/2020/06/20/...

Even if you’re not, it can’t hurt seeing as he is.

'It looks like the accident was rotten luck. The competitors were approaching the end of the stage at Montalcino where the road slopes down gently and bends, and Alex went wide at the bend and into the opposite carriageway just as a lorry was approaching. The lorry driver tried to brake but didn't have enough time.'

Madness that the road wasn't closed for the event.
Christ. I hope that the organisers are hung drawn and quartered over this. How in the name of hell was that road not closed???

"The condition of Alex Zanardi is serious but stable," Dr. Olivieri is quoted as saying by the Associated Press.

"He arrived here with major facial cranial trauma, a smashed face, and a deeply fractured frontal bone [forehead]. The numbers are good, although it remains a very serious situation.

"We won't see what his neurological state is until he wakes up — if he wakes up. Serious condition means it's a situation when someone could die. Improvement takes time in these cases.

Unfortunately there doesn't appear to be much improvement as this time.

His accident in Indy car was horrific. How he came back from that to race again was unbelievable.

I really hope to god he pulls through this one as well.

I can’t add anything but my sadness that I feel this is the final ride for a true champion. Please prove me wrong.

To me it seems so much worse when our heroes are lost to non motorsport accidents after such long and often dangerous careers. Whether that be planes, helicopters, skiing or hand bike races!

Thats definitely bad timing, Alex is featured in the most recent Beyond The Grid (f1) podcast and came across as an inspirational figure. Best wishes to him!
I listened to this, inspiring. Unforgettable memories of his time in the CART series with Chip Ganassi Racing.

He had a second operation on Monday following "an evolution in the patient's state which made is necessary to have a second neurosurgical intervention". The operation lasted 2.5 hours and he remains in a coma and this intervention was anticipated by his surgeons.

Hard to know whether it’s good or bad news.

Just been reading that he has had to undergo futher surgery and remains in very serious condition.
They are trying to re-build his face and skull which is terrible news and the injuries to his brain are said to be severe. Still in a coma and likely to require more surgery. frown

Sounds desperately sad.

“The operation "required careful programming that made use of computerised, digital and three-dimensional technologies, made to measure for the patient," according to Professor Paolo Gennaro, director of maxillofacial surgery at Siena University Hospital.”

The are going to start waking him up slowly from his coma..

Hope he does wake up, but he's a tough guy so fingers crossed for him and his family. Must be horrible times for them.
