Reports from Italy say the truck driver swerved sufficiently for the impact to be a glancing blow, rather than head-on. Otherwise one imagines the outcome would have been very much more final.
I won't repeat all that's been said, but he was pretty banged-up and will need some reconstructive surgery if he pulls through. Use Google Translate on this if you'd like to read more: https://www.ansa.it/sito/notizie/sport/2020/06/20/...

'It looks like the accident was rotten luck. The competitors were approaching the end of the stage at Montalcino where the road slopes down gently and bends, and Alex went wide at the bend and into the opposite carriageway just as a lorry was approaching. The lorry driver tried to brake but didn't have enough time.'
Madness that the road wasn't closed for the event.
Christ. I hope that the organisers are hung drawn and quartered over this. How in the name of hell was that road not closed???Madness that the road wasn't closed for the event.
"The condition of Alex Zanardi is serious but stable," Dr. Olivieri is quoted as saying by the Associated Press.
"He arrived here with major facial cranial trauma, a smashed face, and a deeply fractured frontal bone [forehead]. The numbers are good, although it remains a very serious situation.
"We won't see what his neurological state is until he wakes up — if he wakes up. Serious condition means it's a situation when someone could die. Improvement takes time in these cases.

Unfortunately there doesn't appear to be much improvement as this time.

He had a second operation on Monday following "an evolution in the patient's state which made is necessary to have a second neurosurgical intervention". The operation lasted 2.5 hours and he remains in a coma and this intervention was anticipated by his surgeons.
Hard to know whether it’s good or bad news.
