Jan Lammers! They ran the estate because of aerodynamic reasons.
Or marketing! wink
Whatever the reason, it certainly got the job done: it won races. biggrin

it was for marketing purposes but also because TWR knew that in all likelihood they would not win a race in the first year so it did not matter for overall competitiveness.(the body shape)

Best result was third

Its a 1980/81 TE71 Toyota Corolla 1.6GT.

The car was rebuilt to be a replica of the winning Toyota-GB / Hughes of Beaconsfield Touring Car as driven by Win Percy in the 1982 championship, and raced in the CSCC Group 1 series in 1994 (when it was the overall winner) and in 1995.
Are you sure it hasn't been raced more recently than that? I raced in CSCC Group 1 2000 to 2007, I'm sure I recognise that Corolla from the earlier years and my car had a Millers VSP sponsor sunstrip on it just like that one.

I still don't quite get the new race series - as someone else as already pointed out, Group 1 Touring Cars can already race with the Classic Saloon Car Club. This just waters entries down even further when all race series/championships need to make up their numbers.

Or is this JUST for original cars with history? Are they really going to find a full grid of them?

I think one of the organisers has got a few, that way his eligible cars will go up in value. Maybe.

I suspect they were helped into the saloon route by the relaxation of the aero rules for 1995 after the Alfa wing homologation debacle of 1994. I had the 1995 Volvo t-shirt - must see if it's in a box at my parents' place...

Love that black Firenza in the background. Probably one of only a few vauxhall cars I would have liked to have owned. (Manta / Monaro / Senator)

I love the earlier stuff from Garlick's original post - great years. To me the period with the RS500's was the absolute peak - I remember watching the Bathurst 1000 back in the mid 80's when the European teams took a load of M3's and RS 500's over to Aus to take on Brockie in his Holden. Epic racing - can't recall who was in the Sierras but IIRC Smokin' Jo Winklehock was making waves in an M3.........

This is nothing new is it? It's been running for years as the Classic Touring Club with pre 93, Group 1 etc. Great fun to watch and I had one of the cars that is back racing in the pre 93, the Supra, which I think has ended up third in this years Championship? Why is this one any different?
That's what I thought, Historic Touring car for different years brackets has been going for a while I thought, as has Classic Sports Car Races, future classics etc...

According to an interview with Tom Walkinshaw in Classic Cars a few years ago, it was entirely by accident. TWR ordered some Volvo 850 bodyshells from Sweden assuming they'd be saloons and they turned out to be estates. Given that it was too late to send them back, they stuck with them and a legend was born.

Funny really - I think that was probably the first proper 5-door high-performance estate, so therefore it kicked off a genre that Volvo has competed with the likes of BMW and Mercedes for ever since, and it all began as a result of an ordering cock-up. Prior to that it was assumed that estates were just for people carting families around and they never bothered putting powerful engines in them.

I remember watching SD1 Rovers battling with 635 BMWs, both using plenty of opposite lock through Paddock Bend at Brands Hatch. Great stuff.

Although there have definitely been a number of classic/historic race series run for some time in the UK. Tin-tops, SRGTCs, LMA, Alfas and many others.

Anything that can get more rwd saloons out on the race tracks has to be a good thing, doesn't it? So long as it does not reduce entries in existing series, that is.

Hi Guys,

Chris Scragg was racing his beautiful Broadspeed Jaguar XJ12C at the Top Hat Masters event back in August this year at Snetterton Circuit. Here is one of my photo's of the car from the event.

Here is a link to a few other photo's from the event for those that are interested in Historic Touring Cars: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php...

Can't wait for this new series to start next year - should hopefully get many old Touring Cars out of storage and onto the track for us all to enjoy

I have Tim Harvey's 1991 BTTC car, its exactly as it last raced, winning at Silverstone apart from a refresh and renewal of essential components, would love to get it out a few times a year and use it as it was intended, a historical series would be fantastic.
