We should arrive between 11 - 12 on the Sunday. Whats the script with the "convoy"?
They have built a temp road over the railway... it's ok for low cars. They leave the road and you drive 'on track' for a bit! When they are not convoying, they are doing this:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QlHO1qqH_sI
(ETA it was doing this (falling) by itself last year, so they are trying to be 'proactive' by pulling it down, but deckchairs and Titanic spring to mind, I think they'll build a bridge at Stromferry eventually - the road is a bit of a nightmare).

Is this kind of hooning doable at the weekends or is it likely to be like the ring carpark on a bank holiday sunday
Depends which weekend and at which time. I drive a 42 mile circuit most Sunday mornings in spring and autumn before 8 a.m. and almost never see another car. Do it on a Sunday Lunchtime in August and it's caravan city... and as it's mostly single track, a real PITASounding promising regarding reopening of the Stromeferry road:

I really hope this potential fuel strike doesn't force cancellation of our trip
As 7 days notice is required, even if the negotiations break down and it does still happen, we should be OK.Lancs Dave said:
I was planning to return this way on Monday but the 30min windows will make this very difficult
If it goes to plan the road will be fully open again that day.Counting down the hours now. Maybe we'll see you in Ullapool?

Know the feeling. I used to live a bit further south on the mainland ,and in summer ,often wondered if an anti tank gun on the roof was legal if used on the mindless morons towing a caravan without the necessary skills on single track roads . One thing I learned was that with a van behind,if met a yard past a layby "reverse is not a gear we use in this dojo" . And as for letting something past- it's aginst their religion. Hence the idea of the roof mounted thing . :confusedNurburgsingh said:
Ok so it looks we're on for next week, just one question for the people in the know....
Assuming we're taking in Mr Carters route... Where are the petrol stations?.
Fuel at Fort William, Contin, Kinlochewe, Lochcarron, near Dornie Castle, Gairloch, Ullapool, Lochinver. There is a serve yourself pump that takes cards only at Applecross (sometimes runs out). Most of the above are closed on Sundays.Assuming we're taking in Mr Carters route... Where are the petrol stations?.

We hit the road tomorrow and hopefully the fuel situation will be OK.
Weather forcast looks very mixed and pretty wet, but hey ho.
I'm sure our paths will cross at some point. Be safe and have a great trip :-)

Stromferry road now fully open.
Woo and indeed Hoo! Finally means I can finalise a route for the drive I've got planned in a couple of weeks time. Applecross on the radar
Audio = wind noise - so apologies for the lack of a V8 sound track (sounded good inside!)
http://SteveCarter.com/Up_The_Hill_01.wmv (16 mb)... and no officer, I didn't speed once.
