Worth clicking on the one below to see the size of the telegraph poles.

Fantastic.

Cannot wait to get back up to the Highlands again.

I drove exactly the same route a couple of weeks ago from Lochcarron to Ullapool, took me 5h including a good few coffee and photo stops.

Quite incredible roads yes

if you have time it is worth a detour near the end to Plockton and then down to Kyle from the north.

Not sure how it would fit in but I do enjoy the road from Spean Bridge to Dhalwinnie.

Another tip for those considering a tour of the Highlands: if you're going from Glasgow to Oban or vice versa then instead of the signposted route via Crianlarich go via Inveraray. You get to avoid the horrible rough section of the A82 between Tarbert and Crianlarich and instead get to see The Rest, and the road from Inveraray to Dalmally is a belter. Avoids the plebs towing caravans and touroids determined to do only what the sat nav says. It's only a few miles more and is often quicker. Just mind the police that have a habit of sitting on the straights.

Must say that I've got one of the best commutes currently. Fort William to Oban. Leaving early tomorrow and Sunday to have a couple of shots at the Loch Leven ring, one of my favourite roads

Agree on this, when the traffic is heavy. The A82 to Crianlarich can be a great bit of road when you don't get stuck in a long queue of traffic, but that is a rare day. And if you are in something that isn't forgiving to abysmal road surfaces it's not much fun either. Inveraray to Dalmally road can be great fun and is much less busy. Going to Kintyre from central Scotland it is my preferred route too, via lix toll.

I've finally got round to uploading some pictures from my trip in August.

Day 1 - Perth to Stornoway via Glenshee, The Lecht and Ullapool
A93 to Glenshee, much better than in the winter:

MX-5 at Glenshee:

A stop by Loch Glascarnoch on the A835 to Ullapool:

Day 2 - Mainly sightseeing on Lewis

Day 3 - More sightseeing then drove to Carnish on the west coast of Lewis
One of the amazing and empty roads we drove on:

Carnish Beach:

Day 4 - Drive to Bernerey
More great roads:

Getting on the ferry:

Car park at our B&B in Bernerey - driections were "Drive to the end of THE road, drive to the end of the track, then you will see the house in the field by the beach":

Day 5 - We had most of the day to kill before catching the ferry to Skye, so noticing that we were on the most northern of 4 islands connected by causeways (Bernerey, North Uist, Benbecula and South Uist) decided to visit all of them!
More great, yet empty, roads:

Day 6 - Skye, it rained, so we went to the Talkisker Distillery, then got the ferry from Armadale to Mallaig and drove down to Fort William, we were first onto and off the boat so hardly had any traffic on the A830, this was probably my favourite drive of the week.

Day 7 - Back to Perth, the A82 seemed really busy after the roads on the islands
A quick stop at Glencoe:

I really can't wait to get back up to the Highlands and explore some more, it was a great trip!

Nice pics and write up Craikey thumbup
We honeymooned on the Outer Hebrides and mis-timed the drive from North Uist to Berneray to catch the ferry to Harris, was caning it round those twisty roads on North Uist and was doing about 1.25 leptons over the causeway to Berneray paperbag The captain saw us coming and held the boat for us, the brakes were smoking like fk when we got on the boat and the crew men were all pissing themselves laughing, said it was the "best late one yet"! Stunning part of the world, have to get back up soon.

We've recently moved from Glasgow to a very rural part of Mid Argyll, when I pull out of the drive I have 14 miles of this in front of me before I reach the main A road biggrin It's fair showing up the deficit in the new beaters suspension though!

Afternoon,

What a wonderful thread. Not often that We-of-the-remoter-parts get enthused about smile !

In fact, it was in part this thread that prompted me to join after so long loitering.

The other reason is the apparent reduction (to 50mph) of some areas7sections of roads, especially in the Highlands (I posted in the general chat forum).

Hope to meet some of you sometime during 2013 when you head up this way again.
Very Best Wishes
Sskye

Just back from a week exploring Ardnamurchan(again!). The road from Ardgour to Strontian really is a wee cracker. I still miss the "old" road "to the isles" up to Mallaig, but the new one does allow some "spirited" driving!

Wow, fantastic thread, I'm feeling very homesick now! I grew up right next to the A832 so I'm biased, but really think the whole northwest Highlands (and the islands too, going on photos; I've never been to them yet but intend to when I can spare the money) is an amazing place to visit, well worth it for anyone who's not been yet.

Has anyone seen skyfall yet? They head up to Scotland and I was wondering if anyone knew which roads they were on.
