Thread starter here, back up for two weeks!
Overnight kip at a mate's in Hamilton and heading up to Kyle of Lochalsh shortly.
Debating on taking the A85/A828 on the way north for a change. Adds a few miles but might be quieter than the A82?
In a MK1 red Mx5, my trusty annual Highland trip motor!

The pictures look great. Nice weather too.
Out of interest where is the campsite?
Sorry to butt in... If you mean the one of the beach it's Achmelvich, near Lochinver... though it's static caravans.Out of interest where is the campsite?
It's really nice out of season, as you can get the place to yourself

Can't wait to go and do a bit more of it. I loved kylesku bridge!
Blue focus wandering up and down the west coast this coming week, and in keeping with the very PH car theme I am leading with, a Honda Jazz and an older Vauxhall sedan that I have not seen yet...
We will be going through Inverness on Sat morning, then heading west, so may be infront of f1ten.
Stopping for lots of photos!

Guys - I have a 4 day pass at the end of July as she is going on a girls holiday.
Is that too late to think about a solo highlands trip? Thursday 27th onwards - I.E. start of school holidays. I don't care about the weather, just traffic etc. I could be at Fort William by lunchtime Thursday.
If that's going to be too late in the year to enjoy, I might leave off till September.

Do it, will be fine if you get your driving done nice and early, still nice long days.Is that too late to think about a solo highlands trip? Thursday 27th onwards - I.E. start of school holidays. I don't care about the weather, just traffic etc. I could be at Fort William by lunchtime Thursday.

As above though, the middle of the day is usually busiest so if you drive early and late then you should be fine.
Doing a fair chunk of the NC500 late July with a few mates, who aren't really into cars/driving unfortunately.
I've done up to Skye/Applecross before so happy to that point, found tons of cycle routes/walks/things to see until then but trying to work out how to pitch the journey further up to Tongue.
I've done my research (pretty much read this thread cover to cover!) and Ullapool looks nice, what is there to 'do' for a non-driver above this point? Thinking maybe some nice walks that are doable in an afternoon (4 hours?) or anything else you know of.
Following that, is there anywhere good to base ourselves south of Tongue? We're thinking of driving from Ullapool, drumbeg loop (or the majority of it), across to Tongue via durness (NC500 route basically) and then possibly an hour or so south in the direction of Glasgow to help reduce the journey there the following day. Some good camping spots/wild camping spots/villages is what I'm thinking of I suppose.
Thanks

Plenty of nice beaches to visit, lot's of hills to climb, caves to explore etc. Or a boat trip to some islands. You could get a boat trip to the Summer Isles from Ullapool, or from Achiltiebuie. The drive in to Achiltiebuie and up to Lochinver would take some time and be more of an 'adventure' then following the NC500 for that bit. If the boat trip isn't suitable a climb up Stac Polly will take a few hours, or one of the other nearby hills, Cul Beag, Cul Mor, Beinn an Eoin. Or there is a good more low level path that leads into the wilds of the Inverpolly Nature Reserve in towards Loch Sionscaig, from the road close to Stac Polly.
Back on the main road, there's the Knockan Crag with lots of geological information and the Geopark trail etc.
Further north near Loch Assynt there's the 'Bone Caves' to find and the interesting burn which disappears and re-appears from underground at various places.
Clada House and Ardvreck Castle are a little further on. Not far away is the highest waterfall in the UK and you can follow the path to the top of it. Not exactly a good view of the fall itself, though you can get a boat trip from Kylesku in to the foot of the falls.
Other hill climbing options of Quinag or Glas Bhein either side of the road.
Or you could go to the Michelin starred restaurant near Lochinver for lunch.
Beaches at Achmelvich, Clachtoll and Clashnessie all worth a visit, plus others that might take a bit more finding...
A walk to the Old Man of Stoer sea stack is something else, or just watch out for whales and sharks etc from the cliffs around Stoer lighthouse.
How's that for a start?
