That footage is grim!! Quite glad I have avoided peak season so far.

However - pedantry alert - I'd argue it is correct to use the whole road when on true single track to maximise visibility, being all the way over to the right on a left hander for example. You're not passing someone regardless of road position. The too fast bit is the issue.
I always do. The issue is that he had 29 passing places to let me pass and he didn't take any opportunity. He was driving at 25mph in a NSL!
Completely understood and agreed, was pedantically responding to John's comment prior.

have you considered splitting between the hotel and the Inn for acommodation?
That's not a bad idea as a plan B. Are the rooms equal on "quality"?
Biggest issue is that they want us to stay for 2 nights, but we want to do a roadtrip so that's not an option.

What about Oban over to Mull (Craignure) and a day doing Mull roads the best in the country imo (watch YouTube videos of the mull rally to see what I mean about the roads) then off Mull on the Tobermory ferry you could also do the tour of the distillery there. Ferry gets you onto the mainland on the Ardnamurchan peninsula. Visit the most westerly point on the mainland and lighthouse.
I would personally stay away from the nc500 as its just so busy now. I am sure getcarter will back me up that it's not as quite as it used to be.
I like mull but I doubt if it would be suitable for low cars? The group is a fan of roads like A87. Fast, flowing roads that are wide enough to pass just about anything.
If it would be just me I'd go for a longer period and do more singletrack up north, but it isn't just me i'm afraid biggrin

That dashcam footage is one of the reasons even, we don't want to get stuck all the time.

How can I find hotels that have a lot of rooms? Most websites don't really allow bookings of that size, so calling everyone is very time consuming.

Its just the rally driver in me that's why I like Mull and the chalange of them type of roads!
The A816 south from Oban to Lochgilphead is nice and carry on down A83 to Campbeltown some nice flowing sections down there.
I did enjoy the A86 a few months ago even though it was in the dark and in a grand scenic 7up lol

Fair. I agree. The main point was supposed to be about people going round blind bends far too quickly forcing me into the side to avoid collision (and car damage).

Have you considered the Inver Lodge in Lochinver?

20+ rooms and plenty of parking.

That closes next Wednesday until Easter 2019.

I stay there a lot. Expensive but very comfortable.

That's a very good suggestion. I'll try and see if I can add an extra day of driving as I think Oban -> Inver Lodge would be a bit long unless we take the direct route.

I would then maybe go:
- Night 1: Oban somewhere
- Night 2: Kinloch Lodge Hotel
- Night 3: Inver Lodge Hotel
- Night 4: Somewhere in or below Cairngorms

And then back to the ferry via Kielder forest.

Depending on budget, an option near Oban could be The Isle of Eriska, hotel on its own island, not far north of Oban.
Same management as Inver Lodge so may do a deal for two big bookings.

Starting and ending in Inverness what chunk of the nc500 route would you concentrate on if you only had 5 days ?

Views and scenery are the priority.

Go West
Section upto Thurso and West along the coast is drab
I tend to us the A836 up to Tongue and avoid the NE section all together

Simple. West & North West.

Some from the last 24 hours:

a lot of people will tell you to go west, enjoy Applecross and go no further north than Scourie.
i've only done NC500 once but i'll put up a defence for heading up to Thurso and go anti-clock from there. this seems more 'whole' for a first trip. i quite enjoyed Thurso onwards, it was a gentle build up to the highlights to come on the west. 5 days, you can do it. admittedly, getting to Thurso is not such a highlight.
Applecross is a loop and doesn't get you anywhere either. i did it in both directions and that took 7 hours with breaks. so that's 1 day without getting anywhere.
others will say take in all the details of the west, but i'll argue for a more general loop first and then go back another time.
i may be alone in this...

Just for balance, I've done it in 48 minutes (albeit in an R500), and weekly do it less than 2 hours - with a dog walk on the beach in the middle.

Okay, so avoid the east, head west and north west.

This from my daily dog walk:

Head to Skye, Applecross and the Cairngorms for mountains. Don't under-estimate the beauty of the NW coastline though - Cornwall's not bad but NW Scotland is another world.

I'd avoid Mull if you're driving anything sporty - the roads are a bit too much like a rally stage a lot of the time. It's great fun in the Land Cruiser but even then some of the roads feel really rough!

If you're taking the A939 and A93 route back down through the Cairngorms (highly recommended) then the Fife Arms Hotel in Braemar is worth a look for your last night.

Nearing the end of a multi million pound refurbishment by some Swiss art dealers it looks like it'll be pretty spectacular. It's quite big so should be easy enough to book for a large group.

I’ll stand up for the North East. It’s not as scenic as the west coast obviously but, places like Dornoch and Dunrobin Castle are worth a visit on the lower parts IF you’ve missed out the Black Isle. There are loads of places worth a gander but you have to put the effort in. Look upon it as the taster before you get to the main course but, if you rush it you’ll come away unsatisfied.

Yep. Monty Halls. He spent much of the time in the Applecross Inn!

ETA Dog was Rubens... he and my dog (Charlie) had a fine old time chasing each other on the beach. Both now RIP sadly.
