Great thread- I spent 4 years travelling Europe in transport - mainly gigs for concerts aircraft parts hazardous goods etc etc . I just sold the van last week - it went from the very top of Lapland (Sweden) to morocco - from Ireland to the ukraine and Hungary
I calculated that in 4 years I run up 700,000 miles ! Not bad

The route napoleon from nice up towards Lyon is a great road - fantastic views
Spain is also a great country to drive through

Guys please check this trip from Monaco to Aix-en-Provence driven on Bentley GTC V8 by two motoring victims. They've played a game with each other and shot the movie. Russian dialogue in 1st minute excused by the real fun, mystic and dynamic movie with a character.

Great Read and has helped me plan my trip. Can anyone let me now roughly how much it cost them in total Petrol wise?

My trip is about 4000 miles and will be doing it in a 2014 Golf R.

Thanks, I did have a read of yours, seemed a good trip.

I am expecting the Golf R to get 25-35mpg but I wont now until its delivered (Next Month). We are doing 4000 miles trip and I estimated £800-£1000 quid petrol wise. Do you think thats a bit high?

Depends entirely on how you drive, traffic conditions, road types and speed.

For petrol preservation I limited myself to 80mph (85 in reality - c.4.5k RPM) cruise to monitor petrol and we mainly had free flowing autobahn, on the islands I was taking the corners fast but shortshifting unless overtaking - rarely in V-tec.

If your route involves a lot of motorway stuff I'd take the listed combined figure and work off that smile

Yea ill be same as you really, 80% sensible and 20% giving it some.

I'll be able to judge it when I actually have the car, although its advertised as 40 mph, I highly doubt the Golf actually will.

Only other concern is Toll roads. Seems to work out expensive if you use Toll Roads
