I'm in the mood for a new bike. I've narrowed it down to three choices. Super duke 1290 R, Thruxton R and a XSR 900. Looks wise the Thruxton is my favouite, but I'm planning to give them all a test ride over the next few weeks/months.

If anybody owns one of the above, what do you think of them? what sort of tank range they have, what are they like around town and what their build quality is like.

Thinking of buying secong hand rather than new ( put off by the keyless ignition on the 2017 Super Duke ). Have also toyed with the idea of a speed triple R or S as they're are a few low mile bikes going for 9 to ten-ish thousand.

I took out the thruxton R and street RS yesterday for a test ride.
Love the look of the thruxton, didn't enjoy riding it though, has a very lazy engine and feels too long, i was riding on small roads, think it would be better on smoother faster roads. Not my cup of tea. now the 765rs was a absolute peach, brilliant bike in every sense. I've always had 1000s and above for the last 12 years, Never thought I would like going back to a smaller engined bike. But..... fk me its epic fun, quick, light and handles brilliantly,
If anyone owns one is there anything I need to know??

I have a z1000sx at the mo, so long and lazy is not really a problem. Just looking for something that's a bit different and fun.

As for the street triple, I've ridden one and a mate owns one. Not what I'm looking for, but a damn fine bike all the same. My friends had his for five years and never had a problem with it.

Superduke and xsr both lovely bikes, it would have to be the superduke for me, obviously two completely different bikes though, and price!

I had the speed triple for a couple of years, 2011 model, great bike, the new one is brilliant as well, but for me the 765rs feels just as quick and is way lighter, ok it doesn't have the torque but it handles so well

I had a Thruxton R. Bought it new and did 140 miles on it. People rave about them but I just didn't get it, as Andybow says the engine is lazy, I didn't think it handled well at all. It's not in the league of the Superduke or Speed Triple. It looks nice but I was glad to get rid of it without much of a hit. Maybe it's just me...

I haven't ridden an XSR900 but took a Tracer 900 out for a test ride which was a lot of fun and I liked the triple engine.

Haven't tried 1290R, but it's no comparison to the other two in terms of power. Rode the other two. Thruxton R is beautiful weekend modern retro, very narrow and peaks at like 7000rpm, can wring it out in 3rd gear, beautiful piece of work. Yamaha is also nicely put together but more modern than retro, very high seat and very wide and high handlebars, nice bike but not as "rich" as Thruxton R.

Street Triples are great, and I only rode 675 so far, but I bought Daytona after riding Steeet Triple 675. 765 must be amazing!

Definitely not "in league" of speed triple, that Thruxton! Speed Triple is torque-rich Hooligan, I rode both latest and previous version, it's a "manly" bike, great stuff. Thruxton R is retro, beautifully put together, rides according to its intent, no sportsbike, no modern naked. Keeping that in mind the engine is not lazy, just retro-style, 7200rpm Limit, but nice to wring out. Handles fine, again, it's a retro bike. Only "problem" for me was its narrowness, but that's probably because I tried to ride it like modern naked (street/speed).

Thanks for the replies. I'll get some test rides booked in over the coming months, The bikes on my wanted list all tempted me for different reasons. None may be a perfect fit for me, but seem like they will at least be fun.

That would be fun for a day, but seriously that's way to loud.

Tempting though.

yeah its completely ott. I think the akra titanium system + ktm remap is the best sounding, RJ runs his with no db killer but it does tone down if you leave the baffle in.

RJ's Akra 1290 setup with / without baffles

lovely sounding thing if you like a chesty ww2 era type sounding bike as opposed to fast revving jap screamers.

Get one bought, I purchased mine new in December last year and the more I ride it the more it makes me smile, it will pulverise your upper body and arms with its torque biggrin

ME photo bucket still works confused
