Ali Body Caterham polishing

Have an Ali body caterham which whilst on the whole in pretty good order, does have a section near the rear wheel arch which has been pitted a bit by stones etc and probably a bit of salt over the years.

The usual polish not touching it, so am thinking 3m pads or similar? What would be a good starting point?

If it's pitted you'll probably need to use wet and dry paper and quite a coarse one to start with.

I assume you'll need to think about a clear lacquer to protect the finish once done.

Cheers- what sort of grades are we talking here? Excuse the ignorance!!

Will not be lacquer layer- rest of body isn't, so just the natural stainless steel like finish
