This bridge sprang to mind when I read the topic, I used to flinch going under that in my mini let alone a modern car I think the angle that it crosses the road makes it feel even lower than it is.

I remember heading towards this bridge, about 30 years ago when I worked as a courier. As the height marker came into view I thought I had plenty of room - the van was 6'2" and the sign said 6'9" - except, it didn't. Cue, long black lines on the Tarmac...

Christ, I recognised that one even before I read the bottom of your post! It must be nearly 30 years since I walked through that tunnel.

The Great Eastern Lea Valley line had several level crossings in the Cheshunt area.Some of these had underpasses, so ,back in the day, farmers could herd the cattle through instead of them milling all over the road waiting for the gates to reopen.

I cannot remember what car it was, either my 1946 Ford Anglia ( about 5ft high) or my 100E ( a little lower IIRC), but i do remember my mate getting out to check we did have clearance going under it

I used to drive under this bridge every day when I worked at Trago Mills. Anyone who knows it knows there is a steep hill leading down to it.
One morning, came flying down the hill as usual only to find a camper van completely jammed under the bridge. Anchors on and I stopped just in time.
Found that there was no one in the van and no one around either so the driver must have gone to find help. ( this was long before the days of mobile phones )
Had to reverse all the way back to the A390 and go to work via Doublebois. Happy days !

It was due for closure, when a Tesco home delivery van sped things up by going under, getting jammed and catching fire while the fire brigade were on strike. First call out for the green godess.

I'm guessing some of these which are under six-foot regularly catch out drivers of SUVs who aren't used to checking.

1.3m or 4' 9" Tintock near Kirkintilloch. The canal passes overhead. I have driven through it. Really claustrophobic due to combination of narrow width and low height. Plus the sharp left bend at the other side. You can't see oncoming traffic approaching on the single track road. Not that there is much traffic on that road!

Dobbs wier crossing (now gone) i used to have to have to take down my aerial to get under it in my cortina, there was another one in london on the same line, i think it was the road to the royal small arms factory? they were certainly under 6 foot as i had to crouch down to walk through it (6.3), scarey at 1AM when as a teen you think you can go through at 30MPH ! (cue one very bent aerial!)

Good efforts. There was a really low one on Summer Lane in WSM which is now pedestrianised. Hadn’t really registered the height of it until I heard the aerial on the high top van pinging along the roof 🤯

See my screen capture up above. Used to live virtually adjacent to it.

The traffic lights controlling the entrance ended up in the middle of our drive until the van caught fire in it. That closed it for good, earlier than scheduled.
