Used to use the ferry from N Shields to Gothenburg a fair bit, until the service withdrawn. Above Wetherby I had a selection of routes when the A1 ran into trouble to get onto the A19 and then trundle up to the Tyne tunnel.

That old Great North Road suggestion from Coppice looks interesting.

Further south confirm the A46 from Leicester-ish to Newark is a good one, and also concur about heading up past the sugar beet factory to N Muskham.

I do this route a lot.

The best route is M1-M18-A1(M). From Ferrybridge it is fast and easy. Keep under 120 and you will avoid the fuzz. The old A1 is a nice idea but it will only ever cost you time because it starts north of the difficult bit.

A1 Doncaster by-pass is the disaster zone. As an alternative you can stay on the M1 up to where it picks up the A1(M) but that can be very busy, too. It would be madness to go M1-M62-A1(M). The M1 to A1(M) stretch north of the M1/M62 junction is pretty quick at all hours (whereas the M62 is not), although it is heavily policed and I tend to keep under 90.

I have also done M18-M180-M62-A1(M) to avoid the Doncaster by-pass but the truth is it doesn't save any time.

You could go up the west coast, M1, M6, M6 Toll, M6 then off at Penrith on the A686 via Alston to the A69 at Haydon Bridge. But Birmingham and Manchester can be boringly busy.

Km/h ? My experience suggests that North Yorkshire police have a sense of humour failure at rather lower thresholds ...
