There's now extra congestion southbound from Banstead crossroads as the single lane now extends all the way to Garret's lane.
So at peak times queuing both ways.
Oh joy.

I have just had ANOTHER email. I made one phone call and had a call-back about this 'What speed should I drive' issue due to the signage. I have not responded to any emails at all and they keep on coming...

Reference number: ME-422340
Location: BRIGHTON ROAD, BURGH HEATH
Details: Carriageway and Footway - Carriageway enquiry

We have been advised by the section that deals with VAS signs as follows:

All the existing vehicle-activated signs along the A217 Brighton Road, Banstead to Lower Kingswood are being removed.

There are no plans to replace them as the Average Speed Cameras will be enforcing the whole length.

The Average Speed Cameras, will hopefully be commencing towards the end of November.

Once again thank you for contacting us. If you have any further queries or require additional information you may find the following page on our website useful: www.surreycc.gov.uk/highwaysinfo

Kind regards

So going northbound today, just past the shell garage by the builders merchants at Burgh heath, Left lane lamp post says 40mph (Original sign, not covered over) Right hand lane big 20mph sign in centeral reservation! 40? 20? What do you fancy?

I stuck to 19mph and at least 30 cars and vans undertook me rolleyes

That's the 40 sign I was talking about... They've still not removed it? Idiots.

Had another email this morning. Just to add a little more confusion:

Thank you for your email, our Streetworks Officer has now confirmed that there is a small section of 40 mph between the works, this is the section that is a duel carriageway. He was unable to locate any other 20 mph signs

Originally the plan was to make the full length through both sets of works 20 mph as most of it is on single carriageway, however it was then changed back to 40mph along the duel carriageway way section. Our Streetworks Officer drove along the road yesterday afternoon and has confirmed that the signage is correctly placed.

I am very sorry that we have given you the incorrect information regarding the speed limit.

Also, regarding the speed cameras, I understand that they are not yet activated but will be in the next few weeks.

Kind regards

So reading that it means all dual carriageway sections are 40mph and single lane sections 20mph.

Wonder which car will be the first to rear end me when I brake hard for the 20mph bit!

That’s how I read it too. So on the bits with 2 lanes you can go 40. I don’t quite understand how it’s possible they’re allowed to display a 40 and a 20 sign next to each other though.

I have spoken to the engineer behind these works and he has confirmed that the cameras are not yet live. We expect them to go live within the next few weeks, but we don’t yet have a precise date. They will not be activated while there are any temporary speed limits that are not 40 mph. They will only enforce the 40 mph speed limit.

I am ever so sorry for the mixed signage, I have been informed this is due to utility works that are being carried out in the area. The utility has been asked to rectify this.

I sent that to a friend who's also local and he said his mate has already had a ticket. Doubtful but still wouldn't be comfortable doing anything more than 40.

TBH, if he has had a ticket it will be from the mobile speed trap. Not the average cameras.

Not that I know of, but the speed limit sinage is still a cluster fk!

According to Surrey county council they said it should be 40mph on the dual lane bits and 20mph where the carriageway narrows to 1 lane,
BUT, I came out of Banstead by Trust Ford dealership heading southbound, not one speed limit sign up apart from the normal 40mph signs.
then by the old council office building the road narrowed to 1 lane and still 40mph was displayed on the lampposts with signage not covered over! If anyone gets done I'm sure the court would throw it out in an instant as there is Zero consistency.

What makes you think that?

On what bit where do you think you were caught out?

Not sure I’ve dropped to 20 on the roadworks parts every time to be honest.

Also the last bit southbound up to the M25 I may have crept over 40 a couple of times. Not recall seeing the signs on that bit for a couple weeks but noticed one yesterday. Wouldn’t have been more than 45-46 but i guess that is enough.

Signage is all over the place on both sides of the road. I was told the cameras won’t be active until all works are finished but not sure if that’s true considering Surrey CC didnt even know they were managing the cameras.

There’s works going southbound but the 40 signs are uncovered. There’s works going northbound with 40 signs and 20 signs visible. I drove through at 40 and if I get a ticket I’ll go to court with my dashcam evidence and email chains. They know it’s an issue and haven’t fixed it.

Hi Everyone,

An update for you all, about 18 days ago I didn't realise the average speed cameras had gone up. On that day I went up and down the A217 twice, both times around 45mph to 49mph.

No ticket or anything else through the post. So very relieved.

As I understand the cameras will not be active until the road works are done.

In my own personal option, I think that the cameras will also need calibrating once the road works stop. So at the moment sure the cameras are not up. But I'm not sure if that's for all of the stretch of the 217.

Anytime who thinks they may have a ticket, I wouldn't worry too much, it's unlikely from the average speed cameras.

A few weeks back the mobile speed trap was at its usual place, down after the BP garage, so the cameras weren't working then as they wouldn't have had the mobile trap there.

Anyways good luck guys and gals.

I hear they have removed the roundabout traffic lights, not switched off removed, at the 217 / m25 junction. Was carnage this morning apparently.

WTF is the point of that ?

I don't usually go through there at peak times .

Sorry my mistake, Chinese whispers. It’s the next light controlled roundabout north from m25 where they have gone. Doesn’t seem like a good idea all the same.
