Surprised no one else has done the Round Britain Run, every two years in a Triumph. Leave London Friday evening - Saturday breakfast in John O'Groats, Sunday breakfast at Lands End, back to London for Sunday evening. 2000 miles - 48 hours (at least two drivers). Hard work in a Herald 948.
i have. 14 times. Does make me certifiable?Did around 850 miles in a day from Hertfordshire to SW France just before Christmas solo. Well just me and the dog. He had been unwell a few days before we were all due to drive down as a family, so plan B was wife and kids flew out ahead of me while I waited for dog to recover, or I would be spending Christmas at home alone with a poorly mutt.
Thankfully he did recover and vet confirmed he was fit to travel, so the day before Xmas eve dog and I left home around 3am, crossed the tunnel approx 5.30 so arrived in France around 6am local time.
From there it was Calais > Rouen > Le Mans > Tours > Poitiers > Bordeaux > Toulouse > destination. Not my usual route south, but heavy Christmas holiday traffic round Paris and also Chartres made this the most time efficient way of making progress around the jams, despite the extra miles.
Had made stacks of sandwiches for the journey, a couple of flasks of strong coffee, loads of drinking water all kept within easy reach on the passenger seat. A playlist of loud but not too fast - tempo music kept me entertained and alert while the miles and hours passed by.
I took breaks every 2 hours or so, and found just having a 5 - 10 min wander round the quieter woodland type service areas, while dog had a stretch out and a pee, worked wonders for energy levels. having food and refreshments on board really saves a huge amount of wasted time queuing in shops, restaurants etc. Stopped once for fuel around the 600 mile mark.
Arrived tired but still alert, and feeling physically comfortable around 10pm french time.
Not a journey I would want to repeat solo, but sometimes needs must.

Longest for me in a day was 550 miles Aberdeen to Kent in a 1.3 Fiesta on August Bank Holiday Monday very hot day with no air con - terrible
December I drove to Newcastle in my Smart Car, 320 miles, that was diabolical
Today I drove from Surrey to Birmingham and back in my A5, 260 miles round trip, that was long enough these days and that's in a comfortable car

Longest drive was just outside of Oslo to Kiruna in Sweden, about 850 miles and 18 hours. Extremely tiring and dare I say dangerous, I was absolutely exhausted in the last couple of hours but had no means of accommodation till the destination. I'd never do anything like that again, I think a comfortable amount is around 8H.
Oban to Dartford and back in a night.
Finished work a little early (around 4pm) and set off in the works transit to pick up a motorbike my mate had bought on eBay (Gsxr1100) arrived in Dartford just before midnight, very quick test ride then loaded it up and headed North again.
Arrived back in Oban in time for work at 8am.
16 hours driving, 1010 miles. It wasn't too bad, I always do my big mileages overnight, but next day at work was a bit rough.

Just drove from Huddersfield to Surrey, stopping in Coventry to buy 11 concrete fence spurs which severely impacted my mpg. In Huddersfield the first hour was spent driving a 10 mile round trip back to where I started as I’d left my phone there. Mpg up yesterday 53. Down today with 250kg of concrete was 43! Same journey. Quite a difference. It’s a 2.0 tdi A5.
I used to be able to do Calais to La Roque Gageac in the Dordogne in one hit ,having overnighted in Calais . 550 miles in about 10/11 hours , and that included via Paris , not any more !!
That was also towing a caravan , all AutoRoute availing myself of the higher towing speeds allowed , using toll tag , having splash and dash , and quick light refreshments.
Not any more though , do about half and overnight at a Camping Municipal , and more conservative speeds ,

Longest single drive would be Durham to Salamanca in a Fiat 500 Twin Air. Approx. 27 hours non stop other than fuel/coffee stops every 2 hours.
Slept in the car for 3 hours in a service station before continuing on to Vilamoura in Portugal.
I've done Durham to Emmeloord in Holland via the euro tunnel a few times in single stints too. Which is around 600 miles and 12 hours door to door pretty much. In a transit van and BMW M135i
Durham to Weissach and back again was done a few times too when i was doing some work over there. Approx. 800 miles That was in a transit van.
Durham to Braunschweig and back for work again. 800 miles in a transit van in winter being 1 particular highlight.
And only last Thursday I had to drive from Durham to Magor in South Wales, pick something up there, spending precisely q0 minutes there before turning round and heading home again. Round trip for that was just under 600 miles. Left home at 1pm and got back home again at 9.30pm.
I am known as a bit of a Forest Gump of driving though. I only ever really stop for fuel and food. I did want to try and drive all the way to Portugal on that 1st trip, I felt as though I coukd have, but my Mrs at the time insisted we stop for a while.

20 or more years ago we (up to 6 people and 3 cars all with trailers) would drive from Teesside to Calais and back in the same day with a ton of beer plus wine and fags. Would do it a couple of times before summer hols and before Christmas.
Also drove from Teesside to Zurich in one day to watch Newcastle and then return the following day.

As a young soldier drove from Hohne in Germany to Penzance leaving on a Friday evening and returning from Pz leaving on a Sunday morning, in an old merc van. About 1500kms each way.
Some years later done Bagshot to Glasgow in a 7.5t to collect my next project,a stripped FHC e type, and after loading it back to bagshot, more than 24 hrs with loading and stops.
