This junction is good example of where slavish adherence to 'rules' can get you into difficulty.
Use common sense. The d/c A602 is a primary route so will contain the majority of the traffic.
The straight ahead road from the A1072 to GSK will not.

The safest option through the roundabout if one is heading south on the A1(M) is to stay in the left hand lane throughout.

After passing the A602 (east) exit the left hand lane forks (see second link), so you can legitimately go left or right (signalling your intention).

Agreed, but don't forget that the OP's daughter is 'a reasonably new driver'. Therefore her real world experience may be considerably less than yours or mine. As my driving instructor said to me many years ago 'I'm being paid to teach you what is required to pass the mandatory test: no more no less. If you want to become truly proficient you will need further training and lots of practice.

The points I made about road layout and signage are equally applicable to anyone who isn't local and is following exactly the same route for the very first time.
