It's interesting how those who went to the effort of cable-tying flags to streetlamps didn't appear to be bothered about the state of the place.

esrlier in the year we drove R66 (so large areas of rural US) the year before we were in NC/SC.Tennessee and it was noticeable how little litter there was compared to the UK. One can't help but wonder if the $1000 littering signs had anything to do with it...

Sounds like a job for Community Service.
Sounds like a job for the lazy buggers that throw it out, to just take it home and bin it.

Wolverhampton council are looking at AI littering sensors to combat roadside littering from moving vehicles. AI Solar powered cameras will record and identify licence plates sending the evidence for enforcement.

Tax payers again foot the bill
The same tax payers who foot the bill for cleaning up the crap these people throw out of their cars?

When I'm in charge littering and graffiti will be controlled by the use of snipers.

There are some motorways where bits of bumper, remnant of tyre, wheel arch liner or even something off the back of a lorry is up against the central reservation along with other bits of crap. It's not seen as a problem until it causes one.

There's over 100,000 immigrants who are sitting around all day with nothing to do..... why not introduce them to the UK workforce and to let them earn their benefits by doing some cleaning up in the town they are being supported in?

Same with Benefit scroungers (no issue with bonafide Benefit recipients who are using the system as a catchnet!), clear up your mental health issues by doing something productive in the fresh air and helping out the immigrants with a clean up.

If your not mobile, and are house bound (unlikely for someone who's just crossed the channel!) then do some WFH service for the community....

Just because your on benefits, does not mean you're entitled to sit around on your arse and do fk all. The rest of aren't!!!!!!!!

I agree, although I would debate the freshness of the air at a busy road junction.

Southbound on the M5 just past the Bromsgrove junction there was an area of grass between the slip road and motorway that had literally hundreds of bottles of Driver Tiber dumped on it. An absolute disgrace.
Compared with continental Europe, the UK's provision of truck stops with proper facilities is pitiful.
The provision of truck stops with proper facilities has nowt to do with it. Truck driver can get his chap into a bottle neck and screw the lid back on whilst driving and fling it out the kerbside window. Why can’t he just keep it till he stops and dispose of it correctly? It’s a mindset and unfortunately scummy people do scummy things.

Totally agree - there are several truck stops in my area but that doesn't seem to make any difference to the scores of trucks parked up locally on laybys and verges , which are invariably left litter strewn and reeking of urine. Or worse. I'm sure many truckers are decent law abiding folk but there's a fair minority which aren't .

It's in every fking verge on every road it seems. Sometimes I try and keep an eye out to see if I'm right and I am.

I have always thought it should be some part of some sort of national service type scheme. Maybe if everyone had to endure hours and days of picking up litter it might make them think twice as they get older.
Fly tippers should be made to clear up all manner of rubbish.
It should be mandatory, sorry for the rant

There's also a direct correlation between what is dumped and how much.
I'm yet to find an Innocent Smoothie bottle, yet the verges near me are ankle deep in Red Bull, McDonalds and Lukozade...

You might have hit on something there, I've never seen an empty Dom Pérignon bottle - but quite a few Umbongo cartons.

I’d like to see drive-through fast-food establishments print the car’s registration on stickers that get put on each bit of packaging in an order. The amount of trashy food packaging that gets dumped is ridiculous.

As someone who works in Highways maintenance on a National Highways contract, and has litter picked the M1 and other motorways as part of that for around 7 years before going office based, I can confirm that cans of Red Bull and Monster make up the majority of litter thrown from vehicles. Closely followed by beer cans and crisp packets.
