Critique / suggestions for a Scottish road trip
Discussion
To be fair, out of the 1,750 miles we drove, about 1,000 of them were on some of the best roads you can imagine without going for the Alps.
Yes, I could get to Strasbourg and back, but that’s hardly an exciting and varied drive with epic scenery. Add the fact that despite the SNP, Scots still drive on the left and it’s a no-brainer….

As do the English Yes, I could get to Strasbourg and back, but that s hardly an exciting and varied drive with epic scenery. Add the fact that despite the SNP, Scots still drive on the left and it s a no-brainer .

Can I do my bit for various tourist authorities and mention that
from Stoke you could have done lots of Northern France, all of Belgium
and most of Southern Netherlands and covered fewer miles ?
Even Strasbourg is only 650 miles from Stoke, even if you include
the nightmare that is the M25.
Continental cooking and weather versus the Scottish version
would alone be enough to make the choice easy for me.
After you get to Calais, better driving standards, better maintained roads,
fewer speed cameras and faster motorways would just be bonus points.
I live in Surrey so am not far from the Channel, but the nearer parts of Europe don't interest me much. from Stoke you could have done lots of Northern France, all of Belgium
and most of Southern Netherlands and covered fewer miles ?

You won't get a Full Scottish, Eggs Benedict or smoked Salmon and scrambled eggs in Europe!
OK the weather may be better but unless you go a fair way South in France the scenery won't be nearly as good.
Scottish driving standards, especially away from the main roads, are fine although admittedly it's worth looking out for potholes. But away from the main roads I've only seen a few speed cameras and I don't go there for faster Motorways as they are boring, I go for faster twisty roads!
Dad and I did discuss ‘what next’. Perhaps a third trip north of the wall would now start to get a bit ‘samey’.
I did a ‘tour’ of Western Europe with a large organised group of cars back in 2014 - everything from hours on the French autoroutes and top speed on the autobahn, to chasing supercars up Stelvio and Großglockner.

A great experience, and hats off to the team who organised hotels and pinch yourself moments (think police escort in Luxembourg to have dinner in the embassy, and a private concert from the Military wives after visiting Bergen-Belsen). However I can’t imagine how much money and planning that type of driving holiday would take.
YouTuber Seen Through Glass has his new tours business. That would be ideal, but multiple times beyond our budget…
