Hi All,

Living in Epsom means that I don't exactly have the World's best driving roads on my doorstep, and even if I did, I'd doubtless be stuck behind hordes of mummies on the half mile school run! There are a few roads in the Surrey Hills that can provide some enjoyment, but I've got a pretty large car, and many of them are far from full width, so caution always tends to overcome enjoyment.

Any recommendations anyone? Ranmore Common lane heading out of Dorking is about the best bet for a guaranteed decent drive I know at the moment.

A272 Petersfield to Haywards Heath.
Watch out for the hump back bridge after Billingshurst

There's a nice loop going from Cobham - Downside - Effingham Junc. - Martyrs Green (careful!) - A3 back to Cobham. Repeat.

no camera's as far as I am aware (with the exception of the A3) but there are a few frustrating 50mph stretches.

Hi Kermit

I live in the Epsom area myself and the A272 is definitely a great road if you havnen't tried it but beware of coppers - I had a ZX6R and the police are definitely hot on the Sunday morning blat.

What I've found is that there are plenty of decent roads around Guildford / Woking but that they're typically too busy to thoroughly enjoy.

I think the back roads to Brighton from Surrey make for a good blast but again you need to pick your time.

If you find anything particularly good in the next 24hrs, please let me know, I've got a 911 for 24hrs and I'm racking my brain for some good (camera free) roads to drive on during the day but short of driving to Wales, I'm struggling!

Sorry, I only just saw this! I would definitely give Ranmore Common Road a go. It parallels the A25, so gets very little through traffic, but is still a full width road, watch out for some of the drops though... serious potential to bottom out!

In case you don't know it, you start out going up the hill by Dorking West station. This would make a lovely little hillclimb in it's own right, although it's a 40 limit. Goes to NSL once you're up on top of the common, and if you do get caught behind anything, there are plenty of nice views to distract yourself!

Once you get back into 40mph again, when you get to the T junction, turn left onto Green Dene, which then becomes Coombe Lane. Follow that until you reach a 90 degree left hand bend with a road signposted to East Clandon on the right. You then have a nice straightish blat down Staple Lane to reach the A3 at East Clandon.

If you do it on a sunny weekend, watch out for cyclists everywhere! I've been for a few night runs down there when the kids have been teething. Wide roads for most of it, so no surprises coming the other way, and there's a fair few high banks to enjoy the engine note echoing back with the windows down

Also Ranmore has some rather exiting hairpins which take you somewhat by suprise as to how tight they are.

Glad you had fun! I've got the whole area between Dorking and Guildford either side of the main road on zoomable OS mapping software, so if you want to figure out some more possibles, give me a shout.

Just thought I'd add to this thread. I drove the Ranmore route on Sunday morning it was excellent.

Excellent visibility, some decent straights and some tight corners smile. I drove it about 4 times lol, theres a nice uphill stretch with high banking where you can really hear the engine note well, and a small bridge too!

Defintely recommend it!

I drove this a couple of times on Sunday as well. It's a fun little section. Certainly got my Clio 182 moving around a lot. It's pretty bumpy.

Thread revival! I've just driven the Ranmore route in my MX5 and all I can say is WOW.. What a set of roads. Superb bends and dips, some a bit hairy at times but it only gets the adrenaline pumping!

I love this car.

Surprised no-one else has said in the last 5 years, thought the C4S was a car for people who were afraid of the turbo?

Certainly enough car for the job and I'm not a Porsche man anyway so waiting to be shot down in flames

A bump from the past to see if anybody has any new recommendations.

It seems that NSL is a thing of the past - Pirbright bends are now 30/40 limit. A339 is now a 50 limit all the way down to Alton - carrying on the rest of the way down to the A272 is still a good road, and of course the 272 is - but it's means a fairly long drive before you start having fun.

The road from Odiham to Alton isn't too bad - still NSL, though not quite as twisty as the 339.

Ranmore common I just tried after finding this thread, but wasn't a fan - it's not actually that wide, and is a 40mph limit.

I am beginning to think that the solution is to treat 50mph limits as NSL and therefore completely ignore them, but I don't really like doing that. Are there any decent roads left in the area? (As close to Camberley as possible!).

The roads down to Goodwood circuit are brilliant.
