Lovely Car. Just had my fathers S4SE re painted, so just a new loom now. I would recommend Paul Matty. My family have known him for over 30 years and have used him for all the Loti we have had past and present.

How do John!

Toying with the idea of another R1, but tbh, I'm still a bit scared!
Go for it Olly but try not to burn this one to death.

That's the spirit.

Did you spend half an hour putting on nitrile gloves and ear/eye protection before you did it?

Tell me about it. I've just had a look at the Bilsteins he supplied me and they're actually Bilstoons made in Turkey.

Best form of motivation?

A deadline in my experience.

Notice served on the unit the élan is in, I have until the end of February to get it out.

Budget drawn up. Do I get it on the road and assess, or just dive straight in with shiny bits?
Get it running and on the road, then assess what you need. smile

Otherwise, you just know you'll run out of budget and end up with a non-runner with lots of shiny bits attached. rolleyesnono

Oh, and motivation for you:

All £42K of it. yikes

I own and have owned loads, they are a terrific car but they are not a forty grand car IMO, are people REALLY giving that for them?

Depends how well they're prepped and what they're used for. I know a guy with an incredibly well prepared historic rally Elan Sprint. It's probably worth about £60k, maybe more.

Some of the cars prepared for the Tour Auto (see link above I posted last week) will cost upwards of £100k to put together and will easily sell for that.

Oh you can just p*ss off with your Puma and classic 911 too ... that is my ideal garage so hand over all your keys you dream thief! madwink

Seriously though - some cracking cars there and the Lotus is lovely - been hankering after one of these ever since they featured an Elan on Wheeler Dealers, never considered them before that. thumbup

Top work, get on it Olly and you'll be covered in snatch in time for spring.

Re the wheel, I think you'd struggle to get the existing wheel onto an after market quick release boss. I can report that the Momo product is very good, nice positive action and no worry about it coming off in your hands while going sideways at 90mph and sawing away at the wheel - unlike Sparco and lesser options I've used.

Are you going to get it to nice road spec or something lairy?

A friend rallies a Sprint and he's put a LOT of time and cash into it, well over £100k. It does 0-30 in around 2 seconds, quite handy on rally stages.

Oh, some motivation: Harry Metcalfe on his Elan: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W3KWU1qlfIM
That link has just forced me to watch over 2 hours of EVO TV!!!

That Elan (OP's!!) is loverly! there is just something right about a small, lightweight car on skinny wheels with reasonably modest power, although as Harry shows they are definately not slow!!

And I just CBA to get it fixed. So it will be banished to the garage for another few years.
Noooooooooooooo. What on? A lot I guess?

I'm pleased to report Mr 944t is now feeling revitalsed and as tight as a drum; I'll be taking it to Curborough next Thursday for a shake down...

Don't give up Olly, they are a constant battle but worth it. I have a red S4 DHC just like you. It was originally yellow but converted to Sprint spec in the nineties (known as a Sprint-a-like on LotusElan.net) so it's now red over white Gold Leaf colours.

I had trouble with a leaking brake servo so removed it, totally unnecessary addition to a car weighing 690kg, the brake feel is much better now, you can lock the wheels easily on a dry road so no stopping problems and the servo must weigh several kilograms.

I try and use mine as often as I can but I've got a three year old and a seven week old daughter so going out in it is a lonely selfish affair at the moment.

I'm thinking I might sell it this year and get an Elise as I want something a bit more modern that I can do trackdays in. Plenty of owners do trackdays, hillclimbs and races in their Elans but they have significantly more money than me!

What did it fail on? Where are you?

Hi, the steering column is adjustable for reach, there is clamp on the column deep in the footwell that allows some movement back and forwards.
Hope this helps
