Are you putting an rx8 engine in a VAG or vice versa?

I guess the Japanese Cars section would be the right place (Other than Readers Cars) but it does sound interesting...

I would be interested in finding out more details about your project.

You are not the first VAG RX8 though..... http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Might be the first one to actually finish it, though.

As mentioned may be the first to finish. I emailed Reyland withan offer of a deposit on a finished Vag converted car but no joy! theres a fortune to be made by the first person to do it. The RX8 is a bloody great car just needs the right engine fitting. with base cars virtually free its an open goal for someone with a bit of knowledge!

I agree with all this. I think they look good, are well packaged, but just need the right power plant.

+1 on the interested to see how you are getting on list!

I agree the RX8 needs the right engine but the VAG engine isn't it. Blah blah big power 'easy' blah blah. It's still dull unless you spend 000's. A Mazda RX model needs a Rotary, so the twin turbo 13b is the correct one for it.

All IMO obviously...

I like a turbocharged rotary, but isn't it the perception / issues / mpg / reputation (delete as appropriate) that has helped the RX8 values plummet? I think a more usual, normally aspirated engine would open the RX8 up to a whole new market.

Craig at Dyno Torque never finished his 20V one, said it couldn't be done without chopping out the bulkhead and refused to do it. Was never that interested anyway, it's not a great engine really.

He's starting the first LS V8 one in earnest now. He's done 18 V8 RX-7s now so knows them inside out. The problem has always been CANBUS but he has a new electrics guy and thinks it's do-able now.

As people have said, it's a great car and if you could keep all that packaging, comfort, hi-fi, heated seats etc etc with a 500+ horsepower V8, what's not to love.

There's a queue of 8 people waiting for the first one to complete...

Checking-in as this sounds like an interesting project and I want to follow the progress, since the others on here never finished frown

I love the RX-8 as is but I agree with papercup, unless you're going to make it a stonking 500hp V8 why bother.

Still interested to see someone actually complete an engine swap though, despite all the talk I think I've actually only seen one that's up and running.

Something like a honda s2000 lump would work well in an RX-8 I think.

Why? 9 extra HP, less torque, more weight, 4mpg better and the loss of the DSC/traction control. Hardly really worth it for the cost.

If you're going to do an engine swap it needs to be a real improvement or cheap.
