Very nice.

Crazy there's a guy I'm friends with on Facebook with the same car and history as you, small world eh!..
Small world! So am I.

But he was into them before anyone else was.

9 months or so now.

I adore it. I'm used to the size but the power has caught me out a couple of times. Handled the little snow and ice I had with aplomb and a drive down south was effortless in the big Jag.

Would recommend them to anyone looking for a fast, fun yet luxurious barge

Looked very hard at one of these when I changed cars about a year ago, but couldn't find the right colour/ Spec in budget. Went for an XFR instead. Had an XJ 4.2 Sport years ago as a 20 something and even with (just) 300bhp it was a special car. Yours looks lovely and has way more toys than my XFR.

Love these, but can help feeling they are too big for my needs currently

Any updates?

I’m giving serious consideration to buying one, but am slightly concerned by potential maintenance costs, so any information in that regard would be appreciated!

I've had my 2010 XJ SS since 2016.

I won't be getting rid of it, since XJs are no more. It's my daily driver and since I don't intend to sell it, I now service it myself.

Really like these and they are pretty affordable now, you even see a few sub 10k but they tend to have poo brown, aubergine or rhubarb and custard themed interior trim.

Interesting…

Any common issues I should look out for? I’ve heard that the electrics, especially in earlier cars, can play up.

Looking at the Jag forums, particularly the American ones, there seems to be no end of issues with water pumps, timing chains, electrics, cracked cylinder blocks, exploding gearboxes etc etc. I don't know what they get upto over there smile

I've added 60k miles to mine, and the only issue was the alarm going off randomly. This turned out to be a bonnet switch. I had the same problem on my X350 Supersport. A cheap, but fiddly repair.

There are occasional random elec. issues, eg the rev. camera not working, or the bluetooth not connecting. All OK after a restart.

At the 90K service, I changed the gearbox fluid and filter and drained and refilled the diff. These are not service items (Lifetime fill, sir. Never needs changing according to JLR).

The only other items I've done is the discs & pads, brake fluid change and a new set of tyres.

Very helpful, thank you.

I currently have an X350 XJ8 and a mk 1 Tuscan, but we want to build an extension, so something has to give unfortunately…

I have tried looking for typical annual running costs for the XJ SS, but to no avail. I know you said you did your own servicing etc, but are you able to shed any light?

I would imagine that running costs are similar for your current XJ, except maybe for fuel consumption.

I don't keep records of annual running costs, but Fully comp Class 1 insurance for me is about £420 and RFL is about £500. MOT £40. It's used mainly for long runs, and returns 23-28mpg.

I keep to the 15k mile service intervals, using the same genuine quality parts that JLR would use at a service.

At the last service @ 95k
10l of Shell Helix Ultra 5w-20 was about £65
Oil filter £15
ZF gearbox sump pan and 8l of ZF Lifeguard was £200
2l of Castrol 75W-90 was £80 (ouch !)

The last JLR service @80k was £370 for basically an oil and filter change. They also mangled and did not replace several undertray screws. Easily fixed by me for peanuts.

Edited to note I also bought an iCarsoft LR V3.0 diagnostics unit with JLR firmware at about £130

Again, very helpful: thanks.

I’m quite (pleasantly) surprised by those running costs. I like to think my current XJ has been well looked after (gearbox service; new headliner; new bushes as/when required), so that sounds tolerable, assuming nothing big goes bang! The fact you say it’s fairly straightforward to work on also bodes well: I can ask my local trusted garage to do most work without paying massive amounts of money to a main dealer.

Is the fuel consumption that bad? My 7 mile each way commute (lots of traffic lights; not much actual traffic; B roads and urban roads) produces about 21 mpg in the X350.

Also, what are your impressions of how it drives compared to the X350?

It's waaayyyy quicker than the X350 SV8. Also I prefer that it has only rear air suspension with adaptive coil-spring front dampers.

When I first drove my X350 it felt very bouncy compared to my previous X308 XJR that had adaptive coil-spring dampers all round.

The X351 set-up is a good compromise.

Life and the future of big ICE cars is short - get one now while you can !

You’re certainly make me consider it! I’d prefer to keep the TVR as long as possible though, so I shan’t pursue the extension idea too vigorously with the wife!

If push comes to shove, the XJ SS does sound like a fine option.
