Are you remaking the whole front dash fascia or just the glovebox?

The whole fascia as it will gave four round aluminium air vents with a clock between the middle two. The new gauges will also be closer together as the warning light block is much smaller. Lower part of dash will then be remade to support the double din navigation and all the new switches and then the aircon stuff below it. Then the ski slope remade to accomodate nicer window switches.

making the four aluminium peices and having them veneered in piano black to match the steering wheel and also modifying the gear lever to accept a round piano black know. Chrome round vents and switches should look great against the black and the cream dials should really stand out

Sounds rather good smile
The piano black veneer. If it's wood on Ali it will split and lift as the metal will expand and contract with heat at a different rate to a wood veneer. If using a wood veneer it's best on a ply back.
If the piano black is paint on Ali then you will be fine smile

I'm still enjoying the thread and like the others I'm looking forward to the finished job.

I was wondering, is there a risk of condensation forming on the aluminium air vents when the aircon is switched on?

Air conditioning strips the moisture out of the "conditioned" air. So I wouldn't think that'll be an issue.

The vents are coming from the company that makes the aircon system so if it does then they will have to sort it but as said below it shouldnt happen.

Be careful when you replace the glovebox. Don't use anything reflective or shiny.

There's nothing more irritating than being dazzled by some glinty thing on the left of the dash. I'm looking at you Quattro badge.

I've slowed it down due to the amount of ££££ the bodywork ate.

Bumpers and the rest are off being chromed and heated windscreen on the way. When they are done it will pretty much be finished on the outside bar the wheels and setting the suspension

I need a new set of racing bullet mirrors for the car but I'm confused. The ones that are on it are 3.75inch units with convex glass. I have seen some for sale that are 4.5 inch units and think they might look better on a big car but they are flat glass. Excuse my ignorance but what would the difference be in terms of what you can see? I found that before the restoration I barely used them anyway as there is so much glass it's easy to look around yourself but I don't want to buy the bigger ones then think oh crap. Help

If it's any help...I had a 1970 Lotus Elan DHC for a while. It had a set of Sebring racing mirrors fitted with flat glass, and they were useless !

I managed to get some convex glass made to fit using a template ( via Halfords of all people as they were the official agents for the company Summit who made the glass IIRC)

The difference was amazing, so I would advise convex glass over flat. In my opinion of course !
