Agreed, nice work going on here.

I reckon Dom's will be finished before the one above, but much respect to stu.

Both when completed will be ace, Miami blue does indeed rock. Was the paint on yours really that bad Dom?

I wouldn't count on mine being finished first wink

Was the paint that bad? Honestly? I'd say so.

The bonnet and roof were matt and pretty bare in places and although other panels weren't necessarily terrible; there were a lot of dents etc (you can see how much work there was before primer in the earlier pics).

It was worth doing (well, maybe not financially) to end up with the car I want and I think I've tracked down a new rear bumper smile

Next on the list of annoying to find parts; a bonnet cable! Anyone know where to find a new one?

Great to see this getting to the paint shop, looking forward to the updates.

For the bonnet release, on being broken here:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BREAKING-S1-106-XSI-Miam...

Also there's a rumour on the 106 forum that Mk1 Saxo VTR cables fit - worth further investigation.

Hi Spinakerr - that's the car (well, same chap as he has another Miami XSi breaker) that my gearbox came out of, so I've already had a chat and it's a no-go.

I'd really like a new one as they're all apparently 'sticky' at the minimum. I'd found that Rallye thread on the VTR cable last week but couldn't find a new one online, though maybe Citroen stock them.

It's a bit difficult getting it all done as we are still having problems with our BT broadband and have had no Internet for days frown

Should be picking up the rear bumper and dropping it at the paint shop this afternoon though, which is nice as I thought that that would be the hard thing to find (not that I made it easy)!

Thanks Trollied - that's very kind!

Might drop the gearbox at the refurbers with the Quaife ATB - more progress without having to lift a finger!

Still I did have to get two engines in and out of the removal van... on my own with no hoist etc!

Let's just say that the alloy block 'Cup' engine is significantly lighter! There's no way I'm not going to try and make that work!
The alloy block engine weighs about 80kg. The iron one is 120kg. Go with the alloy smile

I lifted an iron block in front of a girl when I was 19, after managing my alloy block quite easily.

I got a bit of a shock!
Lifting an alloy block's not too bad, but I can only just get the iron one off the ground, personally. There's nothing to grab onto, that's the biggest problem!

You're all wimps wink

To be fair - I'm never doing it again with them in one piece and that one even had the iron exhaust manifold and downpipe attached.

I could have split it up but it was literally the last thing to move from the old house and it needed doing!

I remember being 19 and moving a 2litre Ford Pinto engine around... that was half my life ago though frown

Off to get the rear bumper in the next hour and a new front panel is en route as it'll be 'easier' to sort than the old one. Buys the paint shop more time on the important bits.

Will see the car later and hopefully the Internet will return and I can get after the bonnet release cable!

Quick update: 3.5hrs in the car yielded the correct bumper. Bit scuffed from storage but 'new' and everything intact and will be painted anyway.

Had a nice surprise waiting for me at Claremont Coachworks:

They reckon they are still ~3 weeks off but the front bumper is primed, the new wings and new bonnet painted and it looks great!!!

You managed to get new wings direct from a dealer???

The answer to that would be a 'no'...

In fact, I haven't gone to a dealer for anything so far.

However, i'll tell you more when the front end goes together as i'm not 100% sure the wings we have are 'right' (though the old ones weren't bad so this was for time saving).

Busy this week with Mrs9 off (teacher) and seeing my (much smaller) siblings etc so there probably won't be progress for a few days as I guess everyone disappears for Easter after tomorrow.

Ahhhhh OK... i did try a few dealers and the answer from all of them was pretty much "go away"

My wings were in pretty good shape just a couple of tiny bubbles forming at the bottom where it tucks against the sill.. i took them up to Nottingham and had them stripped/dipped and Ecoated....

Some more progress...

Think it will be 'finished' next week.

Had a bit of a nightmare tracking down a bonnet release cable.... and haven't.

Bought a Saxo and a 306 cable to see if one can work.

Managed to get a new window channel off ebay, which Peugeot no longer stock, so that was a win.

Anyway:

Engine bay with new crossmember - Next to get attention!

They're going to paint the rest of the plastic trim to match the bumpers, so it all looks good/ new.

Hmmm... Probably should have been building an engine!

Great progress Dom - it must heartening to see fresh paint applied that will only see daylight after your turn of the key.

I know it says 1997 but the lever and catch looks familiar:

Or perhaps this seller? Where there's a bonnet there's a cable...

Thanks bud smile

First one has been on my watch list for a while but was 3rd choice between the brand new (which I wanted ideally) 306 cable, which is only £12 posted, and the 2nd hand Saxo cable... I might yet get it, though a GTi cable can still be had brand new but Mk.2 cables are different.

The thing is that it's only the very end fitting (engine bay) that broke so I reckon we'll be able to fix using one of the cables I've bought, at the very minimum. I am kind of hoping one might be fit and forget but we'll see.

I did order (and pay for) the 'correct' cable from Europe, new, with postage and everything at the slightly crazy cost of something like £70. However, they came back a day later and said they couldn't get one anywhere and refunded. I tried.

As for that bonnet; I believe that is my buddy Marc, who sold me the spare seats/ interior on this thread. I always check with him whenever I need parts. To be fair; I guess I also now have a spare bonnet and no spare cable LOL smile

Still have a number of ebay searches saved looking for a N/S window channel and the cable but I am thinking we can probably live with what we have.

Can't wait to get it home and get the engine and 'box out and do the rear beam. You'd think that was a weekend's work but I am sure I can spin that out for a few weeks/ months wink

It's tempting to pull the engine and 'box and send it back to the paint shop if anything appears in there. A bit frustrating/ waste of money (in terms of it being flatbeded) but it HAD to go when it did as we were moving house and it's not worth paying for someone else to pull them as the transport there and back isn't too bad.

Once again, I love reading this thread.

I've got a 106 of my own having a couple of little bits tidied up at the moment, can't wait to get it back.

Anything 'interesting' Andrew? GTi/ XSi/ XS/ Rallye?

Feel free to post pics here - The more, the merrier and all that!

Honestly can't wait to get it home but I've been so busy getting a new business off the ground I am not sure how much attention it will get (in one go).

Need to set aside a couple of hours 3x a week or something for the next few weeks.

Want it ready for when we get that week of summer, late August wink

Unexpectedly had to fly to Houston for a funeral and stayed to do some meetings so the updates have taken a back seat but this is where we are today!

Really impressed with the work Will and his team at Claremont Coachworks are doing! And they have got one of the 306/Saxo bonnet cable to fit/ work so i'll get more details on that when I'm home!

My thoughts exactly smile

I can't speak more highly of Will and his team at Claremont Coachworks!

I think it looks spectacular and I really prefer the shape to the Mk.2 cars.

I am starting to like the look of this more than a 205 GTi biggrin

I also think tracking down some NOS bumpers and lights and things really helped (and window rubbers/ guides).

there will still be the odd bit of trim I need to locate to get it to where I want it to be but the paintshop have done me proud!!
