Try an Ashcroft transfer box first.
Definitely on my Xmas list...

Yeah, this is what I wanted to do originally, but they didn't have any all of last year. And they only got them in stock a week or so after I put the gearbox and engine back in the vehicle.

Changing diffs is easy and cheap and won't disable the vehicle. Changing over the transfer box is a fairly big job and a lot more costly, so probably isn't on the cards for these reasons now. But I agree, all things being equal, it would have been my preferred option.

Or an R380 gearbox conversion. Amazing that overdrives are now that much - mine cost me £250 just a couple of years ago eek
Don't really fancy the R380, want to keep it "Series" feeling to drive, if you know what I mean. Also fitting one is a lot of work and compromises other areas.

Re, overdrives. I think the Fairly ones can be had from £250-400 used. But might not be in working order. Sorted ones more like £500-800. These aren't made anymore and I think some parts are difficult to find.

The Roamerdrive is a different design and a better one. And they retail for about £1500 in the UK. But are often difficult to find in stock.

AIUI, "stock" relates to exchange casings. While yours was off the road, they'd have modified your transfer for you.

I thought the TB just unbolted and dropped down easily?

I think it was the internal bits they didn't have. I spoke to Dave Ashcroft a few times.

Yeah it's not the biggest job in the world, but still means disabling the vehicle and requires you to rebuild the transfer box. Which is rather more money than I can justify right now, and having had it off the road for a year, I'm keen to keep it drivable. Next year maybe I'll revisit it however.

What size tyres are they on the Disco1 steels, and are they totally within the standard arches?

My 88" has 225/75 on D1 steels, but with Defender-style plastic arch extensions that I'm strongly considering removing. Don't really want to remove them then have to put them back on again...

Series III's had 7.50 x 16's as standard. You can still get this size. A 235/85R16 (standard Defender size) is about the same height and just a little wider. They will also fit no probs, although technically require 6" wide rims, so you'd need Defender rims not the standard 5.5" Series rims.

In the pics above I'm running Michelin XZL in 8.25 x 16, which is a pretty rare size these days. A 255/85R16 is similar size. They fitted straight on no probs, although my springs maybe give mine a slight lift.

On the rear I'm running Disco 5 spoke steel rims. But Disco rims have a poor offset, think ET33 iirc and they are a 16x7 rim. Fine on the back, but give very poor turning circle if fitted to the front, as the tyre will rub the leaf spring.

On the front I'm running a 16x7 Eight spoke rim with ET00 offset, this gives a 3.5" dish on the front of the rim vs 2" for the Disco rim. In this setup they don't rub at all and are fully inside the arches/body work.

Some of the photos (the one with the Sankey trailer). I'm running the same rims but with the addition of 1" spacers. They did slightly rub in a few places, especially when loaded. Nothing major, but they would have worked better without the spacers. They still sat inside the bodywork however. The turning circle was massively improved with this setup however.

Ta. Interesting about the turning circle - it's st... I assumed that was what it should be! But the tyres that were on when I bought it were bloody great big chunky cleaty things, so I guess the lockstops have been adjusted for those - I know it's not rubbing on the leafs.

Time for another update.

So rather than spending time sorting out the air suspension on my P38. I thought I’d use some of the Easter weekend changing roofs on my 88.

As a true barn find, I quite literally walked away with a Safari roof.

It’s not in mint condition, but in-keeping with the rest of my 88. It does bring the addition of alpine windows, double skinned roof, roof mounted air vents and a headlining of sorts.

The swap was quite easy, just grunt work as there are lots of bolts holding the roof on. A couple of extra pairs of hands are also a good idea when lifting off the old one and on with the new one.

Had to drill some extra holes for the sun visors and upper seat belt mounts. Plus my CB mic holder and aerial.

Off with the old and now it’s a convertible biggrin

And on with the new:

If you can remember, what electric ignition kit did you use for the 2.25?

I've got a 80" with a similar set up, 2.25, SU carb, electronic fuel pump and i wish to change to electric ignition for it.
It's an old comp safari car, but still has it's V5 and i'd so i've been gathering parts to get it back to being road worthy.

How do you rate the current tyres as well? I do wish to use mine for RTV event's but it has a set of Firestone SAT's on 3 door RRC rims and the sidewalls etc are full of cracks so will need replaced before i get it road worthy again, but still want to use it off road so need to find a good tyre that works.

I’ve got good old BFG MTs on mine. Having done a couple of trials and a TYRO I’m quite happy with them. Other competitors had more aggressive tyres, which may have given them an advantage. But few of those were driven home.

I used a kit from here for the ignition:

As for tyres. I really like the Guyanes. They drive ok on the road and work brilliantly off road. I’d certainly recommend them. You can get them in 7.50 x 16 and 235/85’s.

Thanks for the replies.

Going to be rewiring the car so an upgrade to the electrics is due as it’s full of old redundant wires etc. Plus if the age stamp on the starter is anything to go with, all electrical items are from the 70s hehe

So since putting in the Tdi I’ve been disappointed with how loud it is inside compared to a Tdi 90.

I originally used standard Series’s diesel mounts for the gearbox and engine. Both gearbox mounts failed last year and I replaced them with much softer round mounts. That seem to be recommended by a vendor. Not sure if they are 90 ones.

Bit of a faff to fit but certainly helped reduce the noise. Today I set on replacing the engine mounts with the same. These went on a lot easier, but still not a 5 min job.

As you can see, the square Series mount had failed on the engine too. This is the better looking of the two, despite it having completely separated. New mount on the right.

I need to do more miles but first impression is yet another step in the right direction for refinement and less noise. Much more comparable to a Tdi 90 now.

Only some minor updates today.

Managed to find and solve an oil leak. Seems the seal on the filler cap on the rocker cover was no good. New caps are available and pretty cheap and a clean up of the head and block with some degreaser and all is looking better.

Need to fix the indicators, the flasher unit has mostly stopped working, I also ordered the wrong one as a replacement rolleyes And the front nearside indicator has rusted to buggery, despite not being that old. So new units bought and ready to fit.

Off green laning in Wales soon. So new iPad mount fitted and ready, yay!

So the Silverstone Classic is fast approaching and my Land Rover is one of the vehicles selected by the PH Team to be on display as part of their Icon Display. I feel truly honoured at this, although a little apprehensive too. As my Land Rover is far from pristine and I'm fully aware it is going to be parked up with shiny examples of vehicles worth far more money.

Some attempts have been made to tidy it up a little more. Although the finish is more a 5 yard standard than getting up close and personal. A few bits to finish off yet, but getting there.
