Knackered old Porsche with loads of miles - 996 content
Discussion
Thanks for coming and finding me for a chat to the several of you who did! Always surprised by the reception the car gets but very proud to be able to share its journey with you all and genuinely touched to be thanked for doing so
I've been sent quite a few photos of it since Sunday and this one from Sprite Photography I think takes the biscuit in making a 20 year old, high mileage shed look good

I had a good look over it too on Sunday. Wanted to chat but you were busy chatting to others! Next time.
Happy motoring.
Sorry! It turned into a bit of a busy one, we were only planning on lighting the Minardi off a couple of times but got into a bit of a sound off with Merc down the road I was amazed by how many people were interested in our F1s to be honest, all of us spent a good amount of the day chatting and answering questions. Happy motoring.
Next time just shout Porsche, the F1's can wait

Have you done any timing on the new engine?
Any more thoughts now you've had it for a while?
No proper timing I'm afraid. With regards thoughts, well it's awesome. I mean really awesome..... but as a road car engine. If you were building it for bragging rights or for circuit use it wouldn't be what you would spec/build but what I wanted to achieve with it was something that had no reliability sacrifice, good fuel burn rate and was easy and fun to drive. Any more thoughts now you've had it for a while?
The torque it makes is mighty, it'll pull cleanly from 1500RPM in 6th and is never really under 300ftlbs in use. It nudges 450miles to a fill when pushing on and over the last 50K miles has needed nothing but five oil changes, the air filter cleaning and a couple of sets of plugs. I run the revs fairly low considering the balancing etc. that was done at build and the cams are standard but with a slight tweak to timing. If you were to go to a more aggressive cam profile and more revs it would make a lot more poke but it would lose that ability to pull from near idle in any gear and I think given its use profile that would spoil it for me. It is still plenty quick for a 20 year old car and it's specific output is a good bump over standard but the ability to make progress without wringing it to the shift lights every time is really its party piece.....

What is the mileage now ?
348K - I'm not using it as much as I once did as my work has changed a little these days from storming around Europe to being more UK based with ten or so events a year. This months Evo has some details on how it's changed/developed from running other peoples racing cars to running our own poppopbangbang said:

If you are not using it and need someone to do the Euro hoon... I mean driving then i'll do it. Well that was a long read. Second time I'm going it through, but it was years ago when I read it the first time.
Great topic! Thank you for sharing the story. It looks great with new paint.
You made me change my mind about 996, I like it now. I have only driven 996TT and 997TT, never NA, waiting to get to test C2.
Is there anything major, annoying you hoped they would've done differently from the factory?
Out of pure curiosity, what do you think what it's value be, would you for some unimaginary reason, sell it?

Thanks for the positive comments With regards the C4 the only things I'd have liked to have seen as factory standard were an LSD on the rear and in general across all models an oil temp gauge. Great topic! Thank you for sharing the story. It looks great with new paint.

Don't discount a C4 as with 3 hours on a ramp you can convert one to 2WD and have the benefit of the C4/GT3/Cup Car shell (which is an arguable point to many) along with the ability to run the 100L Cup car tank if you wish to.
I have no idea what the value of mine is, at the end of the day it's a 20 year old unloved model with huge miles on it. I think people who modify Porsches can be a bit blinkered quite often, you may have built your perfect car but to the masses it's still a crap model from a difficult time in Porsche history (the air cooled to water cooler change). As always something is worth what someone will pay for it but to me, mine is priceless

Friends got C2, so I hope I get to try it out.Ok, so it is like Gallardo, where it takes same 3 hours (accoring the internet) to transform it to RWD.

I am using Yokohama AD08R, 235 on the front and 295 on the back. They are many times better than a R888 or similar in the wet, being actually usable in standing water but still a cut above a "normal" summer tyre in the dry - they also have a very stiff sidewall, something really needed on a 996 due to the high rear axle loading compared to most saloons and hatches.
