Hello.
I have seen a car for sale that is being sold on ebay as an import thst has not been registered in the UK. It was apparently imported some time ago and is not currently in a roadworthy state. Project car.
Can someone who knows about the import and registering process advise if this is worth considering. What are the risks. What would be needed to register it and what costs would I be looking at?? Or should I just avoid it!
Thanks

Well it depends what care are you looking at and how much you need to spend in order to make it roadworthy. If it's not from a RHD country you might need to change the headlights and the rear fog light. Has to pass a DVSA check and an MOT and you need to pay 60 quid registration fee.

Please note: this information may not be accurate.

Thanks.
However I was more concerned about the possible legal issues and risks if it is not already registered and if there would be any import tax needed to be paid when I come around to registering it.

Thanks for that. So if they can't prove tax was paid on impart I will probably leave it!
It's well over 20 years old and a project car so in bits.
Does it need to be up and running to be registered? I.e. does it need to be MOTed.
Thanks for the help I am very new to the whole import and registration process!

Depends when it was imported. Since NOVA was introduced in 2013, imports have needed to be notified for the tax confirmation within 14 days - BUT stuff imported before that didn't need to be notified. Can you demonstrate when it was imported...? Was it imported from within the EU?

Yes, it does. When you register, you're also taxing - so it needs to tick all the boxes to be taxed.

I've imported three cars from the US since the early 2000s; all DeLoreans, so the tax thing will/may be different. However, in all three cases I had to pay up on arrival (the car, not me) registered or not.

I have one in my garage, in bits, now, that I've had for nearly 3 years and beyond what I've paid, it doesn't exist (yet) so I think you'll be fine buying it.

I am guessing it is imported from Japan but will check. Does that make a difference?

Also as it is not registered it should still have a vin number right? Is there any point in checking this?
Sorry for the repeated questions. Just want to make sure I get it right and don't end but buying an expensive pile of scrap I will never be able to use!!

VIN number I think is located on the floor at the drivers door or on the B pillar at the drivers door, you also have an engine code on the engine.

I don't think you will have the VIN number in the window if its 20+ but might be possible that is located there as well

Does it come with all the paperwork ? From memory (if it's from Japan) you'll need the Japanese de-registration certficate and the form that Customs & Excise used to send to confirm VAT and duty has been paid. You then just need to MOT and insure it and away you go.

A little late to the party, but there is a full guide on import through to registration on the club forum: http://www.deloreaneurotec.uk/viewforum.php?f=148

The car has to meet MOT regs for the period it was manufactured, so new headlights with UK sidelight, and rear fog light(s) are required to pass the MOT.
