Purchase Day

So as much as I wanted to get the golf up to a half decent standard, it was starting to eat money and it really wasn't practical enough. Even moving to a smaller pram recently (this is the reason I got the golf thinking it would be easy to fit in) it just didn't work for me. Plus with the baby seat in the back and the front passenger seat usually had to be moved forward, then it messed with my vision when the seat was occupied. Anyway the golf was sold after some Ebay timewasters.

Flicked through looking at a bunch of E46 & E39 BMW's, even some T30 X-Trails (I work in Nissan parts so this was a £££ saver, but none ticked the boxes really).

I was also looking at S60 and S80 even though an estate would have been more useful, the looks of the V70 just don't appeal to me.

Got in touch with a car trader, 2002 Volvo S60 D5 SE Automatic. 163 BHP full leathers etc etc. £995 Strictly no offers.

Advert photos :

There were a bunch more photos but I won't list them all. 124K, tonnes of paperwork which I will get too shortly. The deal was done and I purchased the car. My first Volvo.

Stuck some fuel in at a local Shell.

Now there are some issues which far as I am aware are common issues and I will get on to them pretty sharpish.

Managed 54mpg round the M25 in the outside lane on the display which I have also read seems a bit optimistic but beats the thirsty 1.8T golf.

Now I didn't just buy a 124K car with issues for no reason. The car has had 2 cambelt changes, the most recent carried out at volvo after an oil leak in that area. There are a tonne of invoices for services, tyres, MOT's and repairs. Check out some of the paperwork below. It's had a full set of Bosch injectors, intercooler, steering rack work, hoses and bushes. Although looking at the most recent service invoice carried out in May, there's a piece of paper with some recommendations on and I feel the owner decided to think enough is enough and decided to move on. The MOT runs out end of June.

Gutted I never see that last sheet of paper until I got home and organised all the paperwork. At the end of the day its a sub £1000 car and I wasn't there to hustle. The car needs a O/S/F fog lamp and a N/S/R lamp lens. Oh and a pair of wipers!

I will get the car on the ramp tomorrow and see whats going on and knuckle down with the oil leak.

Any advice will be great as I am currently in no mans land apart from looking at a few PH posts and I have just signed up to Volvo Forums . ORG

Updates soon and mainly phone photos for a little while.

I had a similar car (although manual) a few years ago. They are good value mile munchers.

Glad to see an engine mount listed in the replaced items on the invoice, mine needed a new one pretty much every service (one assumes a different one each time).

I'm gonna have a look at the engine mounts, suspension mounts later on today and check for this oil leak.

Have been informed one oil leak that can write of D5's is a core plug and it's a gearbox off job. Luckily for me that won't be the case as I will get it done at work when there is free time. Haven't noticed any oil on the floor though.

Update - 03/02/2017

One of the first noticeable issues was the perished front wipers.

Sourced some from work in the correct sizes.

Can't go without some screenwash also idea

Removed a few stickers and residue.

Another issue I came across today, noticed after realising the tailgate is not opening correctly. Will buy a pair of new struts for this at some point soon.

Shot of the Swedish sofas. Very comfortable.

Although I haven't serviced the car yet, the car smells a touch musty on the inside, so I went for a quick air con bomb that contains odor neutralisers, seems to have freshened up the inside slightly.

Finished of with some Chemical Guys stripper scent.

Also changed the current plates to ones with my works branding on. Not to fussed at this stage for plain ones.

I never got the car on the ramp today at work as soon as I had time to look at the car we had a workshop cleaner arrive to do the floors, hopefully can get some time tomorrow to bring it in and have a look around underneath and trace the oil leak.

Updates soon.

Update - 08/05/2017

Got the car on the ramp at the work and had a quick look around.

Few things I have seen..

I need 2 tyres for starters & tracking.

I also need 2 lower arms.

Going to replace the front disc and pads urgently too.

While having a check on the car, the oil level was seen to and to my disappointment, it was above the max level.

So I drained the oil and refilled with some 5w30. Unfortunately this was last minute lase on a Saturday afternoon so the filter wasn't changed but that will be done this week, hopefully tomorrow. I just didn't want to risk driving it with too much oil any longer.

Also scanned the car on a SnapOn unit

0004 - Siren Communication Fault

6A02 - Rear Right Door Unlocked, Signal Too High.
6A01 - Rear Left Door Unlocked, Signal Too High.
00D4 - SRS Indicator Lamp. Faulty Function

Any Volvo gurus please feel free to help out.

Also it appears the oil leak is coming from a turbo pipe, this will be looked in to further once we have cleaned up and check further where it's coming from.

Our 2010 D5 XC60 had an oil leak from an inlet to the manifold from the turbo pipe. Its almost level with the cam pulley. Apparently a known D5 issue. The dealer cleaned the seal out and saved having to replace the pipe as been dry ever since.
Will be a nice car when done.

Not much to post on, I have just bought 2 new tyres, turns out the fronts were 225/45/17 and the rears were 225/50/17.

So in turn I really need 3 tyres but I have replaced the 2 fronts for matching 225/50/17 but I am getting a bit of scrubbing up front now.

Went for Hankook Ventus S1 evo2.

Got them at trade price rather than retail so always a bonus. Not sure what to do about the scrubbing, may stick them on the rear and just stick some 45 on the front again when I replace the next 2 and just leave it as that. The wheels need a refurb also.

Car is performing as it should done around 80 miles in it yesterday.

Will get around to doing a service soon, then looking at brakes and lower arms.

Probably the most boring thread I have ever made but hey ho.

I've not had any issues as of yet.

I have just ordered a service kit and in the next week or so I will be ordering a new n/s/r light cluster, o/s/f fog lamp and a replacement o/s wing mirror (someone kindly knocked it off and it is in great fashion, taped on)

I had the air con regassed at work today for my trip to goodwood on Saturday for Players Classic to kindly leave it public parking, weird because last year I took my BMW X1 and it was parked in the paddock area.

Had the car cleaned today at work also for the first time in ownership.

Once I have done the service bits next week I will get a few photos up as it has been long overdue.

Not been driving it much lately but the car has been faultless, I have probably covered around 1,000 miles. Not as good on fuel as I would like but I am heavy footed at times so probably my own doing.

MOT coming up at the end of the month also, need to get it booked in to Volvo and have the car scanned and fault codes removed.

I bought one of these five years or so ago on 158k. Mine was a 2000 on an X with a petrol engine and a manual gearbox and I thought it was excellent. Real "old school" granite solid Volvo feeling. The engine and gearbox were perfect, the interior was like new, everything worked and it was quiet and refined.

There were four problems. The first is that it is a heavy front wheel drive car and it worked its way through suspension components pretty regularly. Wishbones were a favourite, as I remember, and the cheap ebay ones could last only a matter of months. I would fit good quality ones if you need to, and reckon to fit them repeatedly. Secondly, although it was quite a large car on the outside, it was quite a small car on the inside, which seemed to be the wrong way around to me. Thirdly, the turning circle was pretty poor so it could be a bit of a barge in town, and especially in a tight multi-storey car park.

Lastly, the petrol ones used to suffer from leaking brake servos and the design of the right hand drive models means you need to drop the engine about two inches to change them, which is a PITA. However, it seems as if you have the kit to do this. You can tell if the servo is leaking by the slight whistling sound in cabin which changes as you operate the foot brake. Buy the new servo from a Volvo breaker as the new part is Volvo only and a bit expensive.

I do miss it, though, and if I did not have a dog I would get another. In fact, it was getting the dog which prompted me to sell it. I replaced it with a V40 and now a V50, so I have stayed with Volvo. However, none of the other Volvos I have owned, and in fact none of the other cars I have owned before or since, have had the same absolutely solid feeling. I tend to be a bit of a shed man, so everything I buy has 120k plus on it and it is at that point you tend to find out if the build quality of a car is up to the mark.

I can relate. The car needs some suspension components for sure but not too the point that it is MOT fail able which I'm happy with as I'm in no rush.

The turning circle is probably the worst out of all my cars I have owned.

This is now 100 short or 126K and feels very solid. Can't see it failing drastically anytime soon that isn't financially worth it.

The SRS error code and message coming up is caused by the DIM (Drivers Information Module = Instrument Cluster) starting to fail.

Very common on pre-2004 model year Volvos.

There are people who will fix them for not that much money and then the codes need clearing out of both the SRS module and the DIM to get them to stay cleared.

I have been told by a guy on detailing world who works at a Volvo specialists its a case of sending the clocks off, I can live with that as I don't drive the car during the week really anyhow.

Been told the alarm siren could be a 5amp fuse inside the drivers door or its the unit itself under the drivers wheel arch liner. Will work towards those soon.

Starting to get a list building up now and this is where I start wondering wether the car is worth it, but this car is comfortable, large enough, fast enough, eco enough. So I'm happy with it.

List

- O/S/F Fog Lamp (Used)
- N/S/R Light Cluster (Used)
- O/S Wing Mirror (Used)
- Service Bits (Purchased already, need to fit)
- Drop Links Front
- Lower Arms Front
- Lower Arms Rear
- Condenser
- Couple Tyres
- Front Disc & Pads

To be honest its nothing to drastic, lower arms are the most costly but the condenser is the most annoying. I have had an expensive couple of months but the Volvo is about to have some love

I had powerflex bushes pushed into my OEM arms, slightly stiffer but bareable and know they'll last a lot longer

I did consider this, just not sure if I want to go down that route as there is always another poly bush to change laugh

A couple photos of the block while out of the car could come in handy for future reference, especially if I do have a suspected leak from the core plug behind the auto box.

Although I am now led to believe its not from the plug and the oil isn't a major oil leak it doesn't drop very fast.

I serviced the car today before a motorway round trip coming up this week. I also have a MOT done, friendly one as the issues are being sorted in the next few weeks read .

Dug the camera out today also. I have realised on these threads I only ever really take photos of my car in the workshop at my work and never in the outdoors. The cars do move people, honestly, I just never go anywhere interesting enough.

Ovlov on the MOT ramp.

The engine bay in all its glory.

Cracked front fog, picking up a replacement on ebay.

Mirror that someone kindly damaged for me, also getting on ebay.

Big old sofas.

Boot strut thats broken, going to replace this with a new pair.

Big old boot for a saloon thats going to get filled up with bags tomorrow.

Rear light cluster that needs replacing, also buying from ebay.

Photos from the service.

Air filter was nice and easy to change although the air box has a bit of a bow in and doesn't close correctly.

Pollen filter was pretty simple but putting a pretty flimsy filter upright in to a tough plastic unit is not ideal.

Changed fuse number 38, 5A, for the alarm siren. The fuse had blown and the message seems to have disappeared so far. IF it comes back its time to change the unit.

New fuel filter in place.

Oil filter in place.

Think the oil could be coming from the crankshaft oil seal. This is being kept an eye on but need to jack the car up in the wash bay at some point soon and clean the oil off with the jetwash and trace it from there on.

More updates soon.

Hey guys, no photos just yet but I have today ordered a new Nissens Condenser.

I have also ordered a replacement N/S/R light cluster and O/S/F fog lamp. I will then have all the indicator bulbs changed over too as they are starting to lose colour.

Be a couple items ticked off the list.

My Mum is going to be driving this for a while, but I will still be the owner and repairing a couple bits. Still need to sort out lower arms and replace rear tyres soon.

The car needs a good clean too.

I took the car to Wales and back on Friday, 600 miles no dramas what so ever.

I am going to be Uber'ing around in a Ford Mondeo soon.

Yesterday I got the car on the ramp to carry out a bit of work, didn't manage to get everything done so will finish it off Monday. But it's nothing that really requires photos.

The car had been sitting around since the end of july at my work, so the battery died out so that was now on the list of bits to change over, along with discs and pads and the condenser.

So first off the BluePoint set came out..

Some new bits and bobs..

Wheels off to reveal how bad the discs had became, especially since sitting around for around 6-7 weeks.

Next was to get the arch liners off, and to my surprise they were pop riveted in. Joy.

Front bumper off..

Remove some lights and disconnect some plugs..

The new condenser..

Couple of the air vents on the condenser had broke but this will be fine.

New condenser connect and reassembly to start..

One thing I needed to do that is near on impossible from up top was replace the indicator bulbs. Mine looked like squashed skittles.

O/S/F fog light replaced.

New discs and pads going on.

Caliper spring clip was not put back on upon photo taken.

The battery had died out while sitting around also, but I had previously mentioned the car needing a battery.

I replaced the N/S/R light cluster and also replaced the indicator bulbs.

Monday I will regas the air con system, replace the brake fluid and connect the arch liners back together.

So mechanically that leaves

- Drop Links Front
- Lower Arms Front
- Lower Arms Rear
- O/S Wing Mirror (Almost mechanical ha)
