Is 2WD front or rear drive on this?

I don't imagine you get the chance to wave at other UMM drivers very often.

The truck runs RWD when in 2x2 mode. It has freewheeling hubs on the front wheels. Yup, it's a bit lonely being an UMMist, although people often think it is a Land Rover. I love Land Rovers, but the UMM is I think better on and off road than a leaf sprung Landy, and has (relatively) better equipment and cabin comfort than an old Landy. It also has very good headlights, unlike an old Landy.

I know one other person who owns an UMM. There is a friendly UMM facebook group, run by a couple of Portuguese blokes. UMMs are still plentiful in Portugal and in Portuguese Africa.

My old truck. IIRC I put on new brakes all round, new clutch and slave cylinder, statrer motor, gave it a good service as it had been stood in a breakers yard for a while. I have some photos somewhere with it all stripped down If you look on the chassis towards the rear you'll see the mounting points for a spec's type lift. It was used by a garage somewhere in London as their recovery vehicle. Wished I'd never sold it.

My hippy-punkabgothabilly brother uses the UMM as a truck for his nascent gardening business. My mechanic has tweaked the engine and peripherals a bit and the truck is running well. Here it is with its Breeteesh chooom.

I am a huge fan of coil [EDIT: leaf] sprung Landies, and the coil [EDIT: leaf] sprung Landy in the picture is one of the best I know of (it has its own thread in Classic Cars), but I have to say that the UMM is a more capable utility vehicle.

<whispers> That's not a coil sprung Landy...

Anyway, the UMM should be better. It was launched two years after LR had replaced the leaf Series 3 (which hadn't had a major update in over a decade) with the very heavily revised coil 90/110.

How does the UMM stack up against those?

Oops, sorry, jet lagged posting at a very early hour (EST) and minus coffee. I meant to say leaf sprung. Both of the vehicles pictured have leaf springs.

Interesting! Back in the early 90's I was involved in a venture to set up a UMM dealership, unfortunately that never happened. As I recall they were incredibly robust and could be driven off road at amazing speeds without being particularly shaken up, far better than any Landie in that respect, slow though as we agree. I have lived in the South of France since 2001 and we still see quite a few around, I wonder if SWMBO..………………

Greetings,
I have opportunity to buy UMM Alter 1993 2.5d 55kw 169000km
https://www.olx.ba/artikal/25162323/terenac-umm-4x...
Is it a good platform to build a good off roader?
I like the car.
I would definitely change the engine, swap it to bmw m51, e34, 525tds like they did it originally back in 1992 according to Wikipedia it was
2.5L 145 PS I6 Turbodiesel with intercooler
And there is YouTube link with m20
https://youtu.be/_-919vanVtg

Thanks in advance for any thought of yours.

Was that an UMM which Eve's fella Niko was driving around in when he returned to Poland in Killing Eve?

Missed that one.

The UMM is about to get a new exhaust bracket and an MOT after being off road for a year or so. It will then go to Norfolk on loan to my ex wife's partner, to tow boats around.

Brilliant, love some off the oddballs here on PH.

why does it seem to have a roof above a very shallow bed without a tailgate, can you get modular bodies to drop on?

This UMM was, I think, adapted to be a breakdown recovery truck in its previous life. The tail lights are non standard. The flatbed may have had some sort of crane or other machine on it.

I suspect that you could bolt a van or station wagon style body onto the UMM, but the back end alteration might preclude this. They are modular as Landies are. This one has a truck cab with two seats only. The cab is more comfortable than that of an old Landy. It is like being in a Peugeot van or an old Peugeot estate car.
