Please convince me not to get an E55; I just got a frighteningly reasonable insurance quote!
Guessing there must be a catch? It's soooo much car for £8ishK. 22 mpg average is incredible! I guess AMG must use lightweight internals and the engine will rarely be stressed in daily use.

I know of one for sale at the moment in Silver with 132k on it.

Couldnt be living with that aftermarket grill, needs the OEM one on it asap
LOL! I have an Avantgarde one on the way The engines seem to be very robust, I was going to make the change from my CLS 500 a few months back, but bottled out, there seem to be mostly the same ones for sale now, at the same prices, they are epic cars but with a very small market, not because people wouldnt love one, but because they are a big, complex old Merc that does MPG in the teens as a rule and can throw some pretty big bills, also, the posers have moved on into C63's and these tend ot look a bit old but are comign out of that, the OPs one looks superb, understated with a hint of menace
That said, if the basics are right, i.e. engine, box and bodywork, the rest, by and large isnt that bad, suspension parts are cheap, even the airmatic stuff isnt hat bad these days with Arnott doing better than OEM air struts for £400 or so, and the pumps, I did mine a few weeks back are £100 or so off Ebay and an hour to change.
Nobody would say they are cheap to run but they dont have the same terror factor as say, a V10 M5 in terms of engine and gearbox problems, not really heard of any engine problems that werent down to stupidity, even when running big power.
I think they havent got any kind of scene tax applied yet, realistically I put them a seven to nine grand car at the moment, some are silly money because they have low miles, I just say, should have used it more, its still an old Merc that is currently hard to shift, think that may change at some point but for now, the prices need to come down a bit, I was going to see this in March, still there, as is the CLS55 they have
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2004-54-REG-MERCEDES-E55...
Dont know why dealers hang on to stock so long, it is six months older now, maybe knock £1000 off it and it may sell ?
Can be a big difference between any car at this age but I saw some ruins for sale, with four worn budget tyres and a general air of uncared for, then you get some forum inhabitants box fresh model, with a few good mods and all the usual stuff sorted, they are the ones that could be worth ten grand or a bit more, buy a ropey one of these and you could need top spend three grand plus to get it anywhere near right.
It is a hell of a car for the money though, my CLS 5.5 shifts but these take it up a few notches, outright quicker but its the immediacy of the power deliver, even nowadays not much has more torque, with a few choice mods you can have knocking on 600 bhp, whether you need to is another question but its the cheapest 600 bhp car you will find, three grand in mods plus the car.

There are some really good youtube clips recently including an E55 with 400k on the clock.
Wow, looks great OP, the colour is very nice indeed. I agree however with previous posters that some of the interiour looks shonk-tastic compared to the e39 and Mercs of old, but that's progress I guess.
This is one of the cars on a very short list that I intend to replace the E39 M5 with when the time comes. Might aswell go supercharged V8 before everything is a one-cylinder diesel/electric hybrid

Thought I recognised this! Saw your post on the e39 club on facebook a few days back. Properly cool car, very understated unless you really know your stuff I bet everybody passing it in that supermarket car park wouldn't look twice. Want, very much.
Yeah it's just a Berlin taxi, which I quite like tbh. It does have a little rumble and I have seen people looking at it as I am driving, perhaps the s/c whine also helps!MDMA . said:
Think one of these might be my next car
AMGmeister has a nice one that he covers on Youtube.
It is epic. I haven't driven it since Sunday, but cannot wait to do so next!AMGmeister has a nice one that he covers on Youtube.
Cheers, I am going to watch his vids, shockingly seeing as how I don't watch Vlogs

I had never had a supercharged car before. I was expecting it to feel like a powerful V8. At 2k when the charger clutch kicks in its like the afterburners have been lit. It's one heck of a quick car!
I am still getting used to the brakes, they don't have a lot of feeling due to their brake by wire nature, but they do stop better than my M5.

I like the way you have over half a tank of fuel left, but your range is only 161 miles
It was less than that, it was at around 125 miles. It goes up when on tick over lol.TheLordJohn said:

Any particular brand of pads?
Will the brakes need bleeding?
Yes, removing the brake lines will require bleeding of the brakes. Will the brakes need bleeding?
Not the end of the world, unless the fluid has been changed in the last 24 months.
It's hygroscopic so takes in water over time.

Doh me, I knew that LOL. I mis-read it as changing the pads only!
No, but i remove the brake fluid reservoir cap when retracting the pistons to give the fluid somewhere to go.(Up into the space where there was air, not over flow out the reservoir!)

Yeah, I just wasn't sure if they'd need a re-bleed afterwards, especially with the SBC being something of an interesting proposition.
If your one is affected by a the SBC issue yours is one that can be reprogrammed to give you another load of stops.I now use Carbon Lorraine pads on my E500 they have a very nice bite but I use Brembos on the 63 as they seem to give better feel on that cars brake setup.

I think Brembo's are standard issue aren't they?
Do your research on braided lines. I doubt you would notice any change in feel as all you would feel is up to the SBC controller. I know you can brake in case of SBC failure but it's very much reduced. Bleeding is not simple and required STAR diagnostics.
I would just replace with decent disks and pads and be done. I replaced with Zimmerman disks and Brembo pads for about £260 with me doing the labour. It's not the easiest of jobs due to sheer size bit still a simple DIY. Very cheap in the grand scheme of things.

The front disc's are fine with no lip so not going to replace just yet. I aren't sure about EBC RedStuff pads, are they any good? I don't rate YellowStuff.
Any other recommendations other than Brembo?
Car is booked in with MSL Performance for the 12th of August for a check over.
While going through the paperwork last night I discovered that it has had the newest Bosch IC pump fitted as well, bonus.
Standard airboxes are going back on as well.
I haven't driven it since Sunday, but I need to use it tonight, I cannot wait!! I almost drove into work today
