BMW 2002Tii (ish)
Discussion
Small/ Big update also!
I re-did the valve clearances, new rocker gasket cleaned the 2.5 year old welsh mud out of the arches. I eye'd in the tracking and got it down onto its wheels. Worth noting on the valve clearances, its useless to set them on the bench before fitting the head, once the head is torqued down it throws them all out.
I love the look of these cars, i can happily just sit on my camping stool (the pondering stool!) with a coffee in the garage and stare at this little '02, i can hardly believe its mine sometimes.
We got some items ticked off the list yesterday morning, it all went rather too smooth and well and before we knew it we had it out the garage and blasting round the village
It was a special morning and one i wont forget, i've never been in a moving 2002 let alone drive one and i've never even reversed a car out of my garage let alone this thing that i've spent 2 years building!
I was excited and anxious and i was sweating buckets. I went up the village around 300m to the church and turned it around and came back with a massive grin on my face. I did this a couple of times.
The bark it makes is incredible and this was only half throttle and what i assume to be around 3k rpm, it makes the noise i've always dreamed of it my head and i cant wait to open it up! The engine is for all intents and purposes solid mounted, the suspension is firm (but not too firm) and the camshaft quite aggressive with plenty of overlap, the noise at idle has a faint whiff of bridge ported rotary. I also dont much like attention and i sharp realised this little car is going to attract bags of it! It's an occasion car and i think every journey will be an event.
All in all it was a rather strange morning and it was over as quickly as it started, a complete blur. It was all rather overwhelming, my girlfriend running around outside in her slippers trying to catch the moment when she heard it, my mate that took me to get the car and who has helped keep me on track throughout slapping my shoulder, people in the village stopping and asking me about it and the fact i got to drive my dream car, albeit briefly!
A few pics to summarise, the dreary day doesn't depict the mood!
The daily car, the better halfs car and the 02 lined up:
Now we know it works, we can get it booked in for its base map. There are still jobs to do, we need to figure the tacho wiring out (signal converter en-route), keep an eye on the exhaust collector, it's blowing a tad and is proving very hard to seal up and I also need to sort the interior out in anticipation of the cage finally arriving (god knows when!). There's also the need to set up the geometry too!
Thanks for reading,
Scott

Congratulations! You're clearly over the moon with it and rightly so.
I've followed from the start and am so chuffed you've got it moving under it's own steam finally.
It looks amazing, BMWs of that era have aged so well and yours is a real credit, as is this thread - informative, well-illustrated and well written as well as being regularly updated - as said, if only all build threads were like this.
So when do we get to see it out and about?

This is one of the best builds I have seen on here Scott. So close to the finishing straight now ....
Perhaps the best Beemer to wind through some B roads. I adore the proportions of the car and the detailed work you have put in. I would probably have this over a Ferrari; but I am a bit strange like that.
I think you know its a keeper when you say "I c'ant believe its mine" etc. Its that moment when a dream becomes a reality - especially after building it for two years! Thanks for sharing that experience.

Scott, this is beautiful. I love the 2002, one day, I hope to own one.. I'm not even sure I would fit in one without some modification being done.
you've done a great job. Hopefully the kind of thing that can be used on the roads properly and not just stuck in the garage!
I'm 6' 4" and fitted in mine no problem. Epic little cars and Scott's will be one of the best. v. jealous!Scott, this is beautiful. I love the 2002, one day, I hope to own one.. I'm not even sure I would fit in one without some modification being done.

Thanks Mark, really appreciate it, i've fallen short with the updates this year, a lot has been done and not updated and i've over summarised but time is tight most of the time!I've followed from the start and am so chuffed you've got it moving under it's own steam finally.

Its now booked in for mapping at the end of the month and then i can run it in, cant wait! With all your hillclimbing and being fairly local, do you know Simon Dawes or Dan Hopps?

The looks so good, and you have done a really good job on that.
Am a fan of BMW's, and the 2002 is one that I doubt I would get the chance to own, so enjoy yours.
Thanks matey, i'd be in the same position now if i didnt jump on it when i did! It wasnt the right time but it's turned out okay in the end, just cant afford food or new clothes hahaAm a fan of BMW's, and the 2002 is one that I doubt I would get the chance to own, so enjoy yours.

Congrats, must be a great feeling after all that work. I've really enjoyed the thread, thanks for sharing it. Look foward to seeing it at a Sunday Service maybe?

Thank You, high praise, im glad you've enjoyed the build! Thats basically what i've built it for and i cant wait to get out on them! We are both strange in that respect then, i am the same! Thanks buddy, i think you'll be okay fitting in one, they are quite spacious although wit after market seats its worth getting them installed lower!Scott, this is beautiful. I love the 2002, one day, I hope to own one.. I'm not even sure I would fit in one without some modification being done.

Looks absolutely corking, those last few jobs on the list and away you go.
It's great to see it get towards completion, have been following for a while, too many get started and never finished.
Thanks, it was so good to see it outside of the garage at last! It's great to see it get towards completion, have been following for a while, too many get started and never finished.
I quickly rigged up the tacho converter last night and got that working and the shift lights so thats another couple of things to tick off. Just need to dress it all in properly now.
Yes i know what you mean, i think people get carried away and have too much project left at the end of the time/ money! I'm very nearly there myself to be honest!

Good to hear if I ever do get to own oneI was worried, given the comments in the amazing M1 thread about how small you have to be to get comfortable in one, that the older BMWs may all be the same. Not that I ever had a problem in my e24 but still..
What a great thread, and what a fantastic project.
Reading about and seeing the gradual emergence of the finished car, a result of so much skill and attention to detail, is inspiring.
An example of just the best part of PH - one that makes me smile like a demented idiot, despite at the same time feeling utterly inadequate.
Look forward to the videos.

Cheers matey, really appreciate your kind words, i think the simplicity of these cars makes me look better at 'stuff' than i actually am though! Best bet is to jump in at the deep end and im sure many will find they are capable!Reading about and seeing the gradual emergence of the finished car, a result of so much skill and attention to detail, is inspiring.

Brilliant, I bet you are chuffed to bits with that! Such a strange feeling taking something for a drive that you've spent so long building...... Well done
Thank you and yes, it was awesome and awful all at the same time. I half dont want to go down with it when it gets mapped for the same reason it's hearing it make noise after 2 years of silence and you remember having the whole engine and gearbox etc into a thousand pieces!yonex said:
Absolutely stunning.

Lovely car.
Thank You, glad you like it!Retrospective videos uploaded to YouTube. In hindsight I realise and wish I'd have got better ones but in the moment you don't think.
First start from front and rear:
https://youtu.be/yvZRKJjVBnA
https://youtu.be/5-vzqYyY57g
First drive (sound quality not great and not very long!)
https://youtu.be/V7940CNgmms
The start up videos are before anything was balanced or the idle set up (it wouldnt idle on its own)
The driving video is after we'd balanced the itb's and set the idle, its still rough when you first start it from cold but it will idle after a small amount of warming. I had my foot down a little bit on the short drive out with it being warmed up and it really picks up well, im excited to start getting the miles on it once its been mapped.
It spits, pops and bangs at the moment but I think if it wasnt a brand new engine i've put so much into i'd have been out driving it, the noise on the first drive was infectious, even though it was only 500m or so! I just want to make sure all is well before any proper drives. Mapping is 25th, then ill run it in and go back for a full power session as long as things pan out in my favour.
I have all the clocks that i want to be working sorted as well now. The left hand side cluster i was using seemed to be allowing a draw through which stopped the engine shutting off via the key, also the fuel gauge wasnt working so i swapped all that over with an earlier spare i had. I fitted the later cross hair face to it. All appears well now! I used a spare surround as well and have hidden the shift light behind the unused handbrake lens, rather than the 2No LED's i drilled into the old housing, much more in keeping.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNxnzSBIb7E
I'd set the shift light to 2250rpm just to make sure it worked, you'll see it momentarily flash on/ off.
Thanks again for reading,
Scott
