Got the car loaded up Wednesday night for an early set off Thursday, we had a laugh comparing the pictures from 26 months ago on the truck when i bought it and that it had taken me so long to change the wheels only biggrin

Driving the car down the village to my mates truck had 2 kids playing out stop, stare and cover their ears, i guess it must be pretty loud

The weather was pretty terrible on/off all day and the car got a good power wash there and back. None got inside so i was chuffed about that!

I painted up the TDC mark i'd made so we could strobe it and check we'd got the crank sensor settings right:

After plenty of good chat Wayne set about getting the base map sorted, it is mapped up to 4k revs and extrapolated thereafter. Had a good day taking it down on the truck with my mate and spending time with Wayne at Chipwizards, always great to pick up on his knowledge/ experiences! (FYI 4K RPM with a CR Dogleg 5 speed, a 3.64 diff and 195-50-15's was 74mph, long journeys are going to take awhile!) He also spent a bit of time checking around the engine bay and adjusting the throttle cable/ idle/ balancing the bodies.

We had thought before now that the collector was blowing (it definitely was at first but sorted after) but it turns out its No 2 primary flange only now. Wayne had pin pointed it with a sound probe and then later with black exhaust fume marks on the head after some running on the rollers. I need to sort that out, either with a new gasket or an adjustment etc. I currently have a 1 piece gasket with integrated heat shield and the gasket is metal lined around the ports. It may be the manifold flange isnt perfect and cant deform the metal gasket enough to seal so i may go to the individual fibre type gaskets, we'll see.

Also there were some heat issues, the rubber grommet for the gravity feed on the brake master cylinder got a little soft and allowed the brake reservoir to empty onto the mani  this happened on the road out side the mappers with a lot of smoke! So im going to replace that grommet and make a heat shield.

The rev counter wouldnt work again either so need to look into that, i havent changed the wiring arrangement with the signal converter that worked last time i started it up so no idea on that one!

Ideally we wouldn't have had any issues yesterday and would have been back in good time so we could get the car on the alignment ramp and id have been blasting around all weekend but nevermind! I think such minor problems for the work thats been carried out is okay, im quite happy.

Few more pics from the day:

I also managed to sort out the rear seat delete a couple of days before we went down too, i've been putting it off as im not very good/ patient with interior type jobs!

Looks much better, i'm only really waiting on the cage now in addition to the 'to do' list above!

Thanks for reading,

Scott

A rare little part, do you know what it is?

There should be 2, but, I don’t know where the other one is frown

Gearbox mount mount laugh one either side of the transmission tunnel. Sure they are spot welded in from factory. Mine have been moved in the past for the elongated 5 speed!

I recognised the part but couldn't pin point it, a buddy knew straight away!

It was bought from BMW when I had a 5 speed I was going to fit to mine.

I always got the impression this is how they were fitted, even at the factory.

The box was a very expensive option, and, rarely specified, for obvious reasons. So, I’d assumed there was no automated way of fitting the brackets?

BTW, I never fitted the box, it was an early one, with the dodgy output spline, and the later output shaft, was obviously too expensive at the time.

My box, was originally fitted to a late 60’s Alpina, which the owner had rolled. I bought the box and Alpina internal roll bar for peanuts, but, stupidly, passed on the vented front brake kit, and the ‘long nose’ lsd frown

Still go a soft spot for the 02, but, would only have something special, like yours, now though smile

The box you speak of is what I have in mine, it's the same as the 4 speed in essense but with a sandwich section so it only needs the mounts moving the thickness of that section further back.

The boxes are a rare thing like you say due to the cost of them when new and hardly anyone specifying them. Rebuilt ones seem to do 3.5-4k, I hope I don't obliterate mine as I couldnt afford one now! The same can be said for the whole car to be honest, I really did buy it just at the right time.

How long ago did you have yours? Always great to hear of stories from when the cars and parts were more readily available!

Yes Scott, same box, but with the earlier, flawed output spline. I seem to recall that, the box was about £1000 when specified new.

I sold my ‘flawed’ box for £120 back in 84.

Back then I had a Golf yellow 02, followed by a Verona red tii. I rebuilt the engine, but, the injection was never quite right on it frown

After the tii I bought a Mk1 RS2000... I have an RS2000 now too smile

That's crazy when a Tii was £2500 I believe? A shame the kugel injection wasn't right. I'd love a go of one on standard injection!

I take it you like the escort better? I've spoken to a few people that have had both and it seems 50/50! The engine builders I help out at does a lot of classic ford stuff so I've always been a fan but just get drawn to German metal for some reason!

Well, all problems are now sorted!

Exhaust blow on number 2 - The reduced hex k nuts i used on the mani (10mm hexes) didnt allow me to get enough leverage without wanting to round off. I had some reduced 12mm copper nuts laying around and tried one of those out, cured the blow straight away! I cant get away with running these on the bottom of each primary flange because of the size of the primaries so currently there's 1 odd nut but nevermind!

Brake master heat shield - i rerouted the offending gravity feed away from the manifold and found a new rubber grommet to replace the slightly melted one. Funnily enough the one that was fitted wasn't a genuine ATE item, i'm unsure if this had anything to do with it perishing so quick. I then got a couple of heat shield sheets dropped off by my mate so i could look at making something to protect the master cylinder and outgoing line.

There's hardly any fixing points at all but with this material being so lightweight i settled on forming it round the outgoing line/ fittings then securing to the inner wing under the T piece for the brake lines so i was protected from the collector underneath too. I don't know how this material works so well but the cylinder doesn't really get over Luke warm now!

I then did some testing on the rev counter signal converter and it seemed like it had died a death so i found another one online, quickly fitted that last night and we have a working rev counter again!

This left one last job before i could start to drive it properly on the road, the geometry! Luckily my friend who took me down to the mappers has very good alignment equipment in his shop and said i could bring the car down and have a go myself if i wanted whilst he got on with his own jobs.

This meant i had a 6 mile drive ahead of me, its first proper drive! I knew the front geo was miles out but it drove there okay. It was probably the most anxious and nerve wracking drive i've ever had, i was sweating buckets and full of adrenaline! I'd prepared by chucking a few handfuls of random tools into a box and taking that with me as passenger as well as my trusty jack, obviously a sign of complete confidence:

Onto the ramp and as i knew the geo was miles out. For now we settled on 0 toe and -2 deg camber up front, the rear is fixed. The caster is as far back as it can currently go on the adjustable mounts although it looks like we may get more with some underseal taken back. That will all be revisited once the engine running in miles have been done.

I took the opportunity to have a quick spanner check, re-secure the exhaust into its mount and get some underskirt shots!

Finished article:

Plans now will be to fit the rest of the centre console and ensure all the wiring is secured and then ill get the passenger seat in and spend some time on the road with my better half sat next to me, fingers crossed for a smooth bedding in period!

Thanks for reading,

Scott

Looks incredible!

Might be worth putting a heatshield over the CV boot where it's near to the exhaust?

What's it like to drive?!

Thank You, appreciate it! and yes thats probably a good shout to be honest, nice spot!

I've only done 6 miles in it with the geometry sorted but it seems really fun already and seems to handle awesome, which id always take over more power!

Thanks for the kind words, im happy its coming across that way but i think if i can manage it then so could a lot of others. Old cars are great, you can see and understand what you're doing a lot easier, i'd be screwed on a new car laugh

Small update, got the wiring dressed in and center console side panel back in, the ecu is still accessible from the front but it has just been easier to leave the side panel off for now. I then set about sticking the passenger seat in again. Great to see the interior back in and sorted afterwards.

Just the rear cage now really but im not in any rush to fit this, happy to enjoy it as it is for now, it can show up when it wants to!

Thanks,

Scott

Cobra just look so much better than old E21 Recaro. They really give it a period race car look like old Porsche etc. The simplicity of it all just looks great.
