So a new addition to the Johnson household, 4 leggeged not 2 in the form of a Boxer dog to go with the one I already have meant the boot of the TD4 freelander was pretty full. This was not an issue as the trusty old mud plugger soldiered on with minimal maintenance doing it's duty admirably until recently. The Freelander in question was a 2003 model which i had maintained regardless, however this issue was rather more expensive. The dreaded fuel injector issue had caught up with the old girl, 3 out of 4 were leaking back. Not only are the injectors cost prohibitive they can also be a right PITA to replace. Only thing for it eBay it spares or repairs. It was bought by a gentleman from Plymouth for a bag of sand.

This left me with the dilemma of transporting 2 Boxer dogs in my remaining 3 vehicles, Z4 not happening, MX5 not happening, 325ci
, possible but not happening. Back to eBay this time looking for a cheap estate car. Really wanted a Saab 9-3 but my budget was only turning up rubbish. In the meantime my sister in law had bought herself a Zafira, I looked at it and thought loads of room for my dogs.

The next day Gumtree turned up a 2006 Zafira 2.2 Sri with only 63K , 11 months mot and a full service history, it was only 20 miles from me so contact was made and off I went to view.

Arrived at the farm and there she was in all her cow st covered glory. 4 feral children and a disobedient dog had left the interior somewhat disgusting, oh well I'm here now just as well check it out. After a brief discussion with the owner the keys were passed to me and it was suggested it take it for a test drive, I won't be coming with you said the farmer but there's plenty of petrol in it take it as far as you want.

Good job I had my work cloths on, in i got and off I went, could I fault it? no I couldn't. Uninspiring certainly but it drove very well, the 2.2 engine was surprisingly willing, it ran without fault and ticked over almost silently.

A 10 mile test drive went very well and barring the dirty state of it there was nothing to really fault. Return to sellers farm and negotiate the price, this resulted in me deciding this will be perfect £1500 changed hands and off I went a happy man.

Saturday was deep clean day, the interior took me 6 hours the exterior 2, it now looks so much better

That was 1 week ago and since then it's been used every day. It doesn't turn any heads and nobody comments on it but for the purpose it was bought for it's spot on.

I will endeavour to get some pics up for anyone who is interested, will also keep a blog of the everyday running.

Decent cars. Roomy and as cheap as chips.

The 2.2i is prone to timing chain stretching but other than that they are great cars.

Get some pics up!

It's amazing how satisfying a deep clean is when you've just bought a used car smile

Unfortunately I didn't take any before pictures but just imagine a Zafira shaped tractor and you will get an idea. Here she is now, came up rather well I think you will agree.

I remember when i worked in a garage i had a few of these come in from time to time. surprised to find Vauxhall had been somewhat considerate to the Dad wagon and given it a 'Sport' Button.. had a play yet?

I still like the lesser spotted Zafira Turbo 200

The Zafira really is a very, very good car for its intended purpose. A lot of clever and hardwearing design in there

I'd probably invest in a fire extinguisher as I hear these have a habit of setting themselves on fire.

I find myself picking up the keys to this rather than my E46, strange but true. It's a far more comfortable place to be

Came complete with the paperwork from Vauxhall showing it has been in for the recall and had the remedial work done

Not through usual desirable motor....but there is something great about a bargain that is just absolutely fit for purpose. Looks like you got a good one for just over shed money.

A friend had one of these, he had to call out the AA as it had some electrical problem in Heathrow car park long stay. Trapped him in his car....they got him out through the boot or some such. Missed his flight anyway.

The last I heard of the car, he had managed to get he drivers door open and the car ran but no locking on the drivers door, all other doors locked permanently and no window operation.

Same lump as VX220. Good engine but are known to suffer fuel pump and fuel regulator issues thats not a cheap fix. Regular oil servicing is vital for chain lubrication. Must use correct spec oil too.

Took them long enough . I thought they'd ignored it for long enough in hope it went away.

I know we love to slate the Zafira here (maybe the drivers more than the cars). I've always wanted a Zafira GSi!

Same here. Does it have a redtop?
I can only dream of a Zafira build... Z20LET twin turbo (Z20LETT?) AWD Zafira with rally car style ALS, but on the stock steelies in Life trim for ultimate sleeperness.. wobble

Truly horrible cars, and I can't stand them, though people say that about my Mondeo too laugh. But, that does look very smart and a proper bargain at that money. I often find the messy, muddy cars get overlooked on Ebay and can be picked up far cheaper than they should be.

Yep, nice purchase OP and looks like you've got a good one there.

We did 40k in one over 6 years, even my kids couldn't kill it.

Ours came with the optional Queen Mary suspension. I hadn't rolled that much in the corners since learning to drive in a 2CV. Still, it would sit all day at 160kmh on the 'Bahn and took us all round Europe, so can't complain really.

Some of them did go away - in a ball of fire.
