Worth doing I reckon - I'm planning on doing the front arches next weekend then she's set! The brake lines were in surprisingly good shape, they're in better nick than my E92's which was a surprise given the age difference.

Little update, I've done around 1500 miles since purchase and all is well really. I've decided to run the car through winter, but to try and avoid the main salty roads like motorways and still use the 3 series for commuting/boring bits. Does anyone know how well 996's fare with rust? It's 19 years old now and the sills are covered by the side skirts, which means there could be some hidden crusty jugglers. I have of course undersealed the arches!

This is when PPBB will come along and take the mick for even questioning it.

Also, grabbed a picture while visiting the parents on a weekend with a much larger Pork!

Very minor update, but its through the yearly MOT with minimal fuss - new licence plate lights required as mine have rusted! Other than that she's on the road for another year, this summer it will be 20 years old wobble

Ah no way! Asmec in Arlington business park? I've brought it in today actually. I'm normally in the grey E92 with a hole in the front grill laugh

Sorry I've only just seen this! I use mine all round and have it up in the air and floors off once a year to give it a once over. Mind hasn't developed any rot at all in this time and it doesn't really get pampered with regards general washing and cleaning.

The most common places for them to corrode is at the front leading edge of the rear arch where it joins the body and occasionally there is the odd random bit on the middle of the rear arch. The rest all seems pretty bomb proof! If you get the arch liners out once a year and give it a big clean along with touching up any rust proofing that needs it then it will be fine for many years to come, based on how mine is lasting any way.

Still love the colour - it looks so good!

Seems like an idea to keep an eye on it, but I'm glad its generally solid - better than some of my past BMWs! Its got a little bit of rust on one of the door latches which is getting done in the near future.

...still haven't bought a replacement key though haha!

Latest update with the car as of Friday evening -

As you can see, all the coolant is falling out of my cars bum! General consensus from the 996 group on FB is the pump.

Not Porsche-specific, but quite common for dying water pumps to let water out that way, I think because the water finds it way through the bearing.

Bad luck! Lovely car though. biggrin

Thats a positive sign diagnosis wise at least then! Weirdly it didn't leak when I started it briefly from cold on Saturday morning (all of 20 seconds), but when I turned the engine off it all started leaking out again.

A new pumps on order and the plan is to try and tackle it Sunday!

Just found a guide and that's shockingly straight-foward! Nice of the designer to put the water pump and stat in the mid-rear of the engine in a relatively accessible place.

Best of luck. smile

Pump is an easy swap. Do the belt whilst you are there as you have to take the old one off anyway and they're cheap!

Don't run it if the bearing is failing as the next stage is that the impellor falls apart from hitting the block. No real be aware of points for this job although it's good to check all the rollers are free of play/noise and that the alternator and PAS pump bearings feel okay. If the idler roller has play don't buy a new one, just buy the bearing for about £4 and have a friendly engineering shop swap them if you don't have a press.

Useful information as usual mate - I didn't realise the bearings could be swapped out. ECP want roughly £100 for any of the idler rollers too so that could save quite a few pennies...

I'm a novice to this, how would I go about sourcing the right bearings? Or would the engineering shop be the sort of place to know?

Well the waterpump is out, which was a ballache on the driveway under a gazebo - but its bloody out! The thermostat followed, and promptly left half a bolt in the block and stopped play (bottom right) -

So a nice chap is arriving at my house Thursday morning and taking it out, hopefully. £70 for that and I'll clean up all the muck and it can start being put back together, right old palava.

Some sexy M96 engine block porn for you all laugh

As of Saturday, its repaired and back on the road. New low temperature thermostat fitted too, so the needle sits just below the 80 degrees mark on the gauge. All in, I think the repair cost me about £300 DIY'ing it, inclusive of the bolt removal guy - so not terrible, but next time I'm just shipping it to a garage I think!

Always good to see a bit of DIY'ing on a Porsche.

There's quite a lot of dull looking 996's about in boring colours like silver, I really like this in the red with the bodykit though, looking racy.

Cracking car OP. I plan on having a 911 once I grow up a bit and sell the M3. The interior on yours look stunning given the age and mileage.

Nice to see it being run through the winter too! I run my M3 all year round and keeping the underside clean (or as clean as realistically possible) can be a bit of a ball ache but still worth the effort.

Will you be taking it on track this year?
