Bloody superb, is that.
It wasn't bought from Hull was it? I recall seeing an identical one on eBay a little while ago, except it had silly wheels on (20" Vossens, if I recall.) Exterior and interior was identical though.
Would love that to smoke around in
Yep, same car. It went through Anglia Classic car auctions in April, new owner in Hull had it 6 months, spent a fortune - front end respray for chips, front susp refresh and alignment, distronic repairs, cam cover gaskets, Merc service etc etc, then I bought from him. Lovely bloke, a russian, and really into his cars. I believe he only had the 20" blingrims on for a short while - back on correct AMG IIs when I saw it. It wasn't bought from Hull was it? Love stuff like this - "last shape" big petrol engined, big optioned ,Autobahnstormers.
This is the fertile ground where some big performance luxury can be bought for reasonable money , and the OP's car looks like a fine example- love the colour combination.
The 500 E Class is right up my street as well.. excellent.
500E was on the list - Jay Manek at Mercland has a nice bornite E500 which really tempted me. This is the fertile ground where some big performance luxury can be bought for reasonable money , and the OP's car looks like a fine example- love the colour combination.

But the 5.5 litre blown purple throbber was cheaper

That’s a lovely looking car and to have a sunroof is a rare bonus.
I know you say it has every option so why all the blanks on the centre console?
Are they just blank or is there an option you’ve not got?
Good point. There is literally nothing unticked on the price list I have that could involve an extra button. Missing special glass, no ashtray, and I'm missing a garage door opener as well, which would have buttons on the rear view mirror - but nothing that would need buttons in the centre console..I know you say it has every option so why all the blanks on the centre console?

That's it, I remember it had had a fortune spent on it.Well done, you've got a belter there by the sounds of it.

perhaps some of the dash trim is from the e class and may have button space reserved for things that you physically cannot spec on a cls, folding roof, air scarf, maybe some drivetrain oddities?Wow, thats lovely, really enjoyed my CLS 500 5.5, did look at 55's but would be too similar but faster.
They really arent that bad to own, the 55 engine is toigh and it sounds like its been looked after, that colour combo is just lovely, nailed on classic, there will be a day where these start to be valued properly I think, the AMG ones anyway.

That's a really nice car, that. I like the thought of the 5.4 in a CLS as the torque makes it so easy to waft in. How's the SBC holding up? That also seems like a cool yet strange idea on brakes.
Thanks! The idea of SBC sounds clever - instead of a hydraulic servo an electric pump pressurises a reservoir that then provides the braking force. You can hear it whirring away occasionally. It won industry awards when Bosch invented it, but the electric pump that operates it times out after 300,000 (I think) brake presses, then needs replacing at a rough cost of £1200-£1800 from googling it. It can be reset when the fault is thrown up, as pump life is supposedly 500,000-600,000 presses, but would you seriously risk it - or a used pump from ebay? There are failsafes with it throwing up fault codes well in advance of failure as the pump wears out.
Merc stopped using SBC within a few years due to cost of recalls - the mid 2006 updated CLS and E binned the SBC.
Google suggests 80-100k miles is very roughly the point at which the pump times out, but if it's been used in city traffic it could be much sooner.
When (not if) it fails, I'd be looking for a genuine brand new replacement - you can't mess about with brakes on the cheap.
If it fails completely while in use you're left with a small back up conventional hydraulic system which isn't anywhere near up to the job on a car of this weight and would probably mean being killed to death if SBC failed during emergency braking. Still like the car?

I'd feel nervous buying a car at auction, so I played it safe (cough) and bought it in a car park behind a dodgy looking council estate in Hull instead...I'm guessing it may have sold quicker if it'd been in a plateglass showroom down south.

That is a great looking car. Both my partner and I own CLS's (63/350 CDI) and as with many of them they're both silver,
Reelly does look good in that deep maroon. Very very nice.
Two CLS is just greedy Reelly does look good in that deep maroon. Very very nice.
I have a real soft spot for the shooting brake, but other than the '63 none of the UK cars have petrol engines.
Today has brought a faraday pouch to hide my key in while at home and some cheap ebay floormats so I can cover or replace the Merc mats (even those have designo badges on) to protect them.
Forgot to mention I need a second key - remember Gone in 60 Seconds where they steal 3 brand new Mercs "those Mercedes can only be stolen with laser cut transponder keys direct from Germany"?
That would be this car then. Go on, have a guess.
£240.
Welcome to Mercedes ownership.

I had a key for repaired and I think it was £80.
Ask how much the panoramic roof is when it fails.
Noooo don't tell me. Oh go on - how much? Ask how much the panoramic roof is when it fails.
We had an A class years ago with a multislatted pan roof, and I asked Merc what they did if any of the seals failed. "We replace the sunroof cassette sir" at a cost of roughly 2k. My E91 had a pan roof and that always scared me.
CLS is just a standard sunroof thank god. The original 'vision' design study for the CLS had a full glass panel over all 4 passengers - that'd be cool. But probably too hot.
There's a really good lock guy near me who can program virtually any key, but these Merc ones are factory only unfortunately. I don't strictly need a spare key, but it makes sense to get one. The Star system can code out all old electronic keys but to be 100% safe I'd be looking at new lock barrels as well = silly money.
The rear seal failed, and there was water coming in.
So, new seal required.
I ring my local dealer, and ask for the part.
“Sir, we only sell the whole kit”
“ok, fair enough, I’ll have all 3 seals. Might as well change them all”
“Sir, you misunderstand. It’s a roof kit. The seals, the rails, all 3 bits of glass. The works”
“I see. And how much?”
“Just over 3K. Plus vat. And 24 hours labour to fit”
I passed.
Rang MB in Germany, got pretty much the same response.
Rang MB Atlanta.
The estate doesn’t exist in the US, but the saloon does and the M class does and the roof is the same.
Spoke to their parts guy.
All three seals overnighted to the uk, along with a couple of other bits that he recommended while we were doing the job.
$400 ish.
All the parts catalogues are online and free via the MB Atlanta website. I recommend them.
