Saw this today, and thought of this thread, assuming this Sierra was the one in the second pic

Keep the posts coming, this has been one of my favourite posts ever on Pistonheads. As you say, there cant be many, if any, base Sierras left today. Look after the old girl!

I have an Orion (admittedly I'm living the dream with a 1.6i Ghia!), there is just something about driving in something that was so popular and has now disappeared from the roads.
Yes, great to see you’re keeping it going bornite thumbup
It must be an extremely rare model Sierra now

Darren390 - not many Orion Ghias left now either. Bit of a conversation on them on this thread a week or so ago -> https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...
I spotted an Orion last week, pulling into a petrol station in Southbourne (Bournemouth) as I was parking up to get a takeaway. It was that lovely dark brown colour (or, being an LX, it should probably be "brown over slate" hehe) and it was a 1.4 LX according to the boot lid badges. On a 1989 'G' plate, and looking very clean, tidy, and original, and still with it's correct LX wheel trims.

I wish I still had my old Escort now. A 1988 1.6 LX in "Diamond White over Slate" with the red "pin stripe" door rubber and bumper trim inserts...

Mk1s are ace, my 'horrid pale blue' Mk1 was my introduction to RWD - eventually killed by rust and was replaced with an E21. I hope yours continues for many miles.

I love the car! I didn't know the base spec had a black plastic nose, it reminds me of the fleet model Mk1 Cortina

I don't think there were many povvo spec ones sold, it's a miracle this one survived.

Well it's been here four years now!

There was a blunder earlier in the year. The tiniest bit of pea shingle found it's way onto my conservatory floor. As I walked in I picked it up and hurled it over the hedge behind me. Only it hit a tree, and landed on the Sierra.

So it's now in my terrible garage awaiting new glass. It was all looking so simple; a call to the windscreen company used by my insurer reassured me that they had glass AND they could fit it next day. I ripped their arm off as this was March 23rd (LOCKDOWN DAY) but - despite many many promises to the contrary - he turned up with bronzed glass. No good for a proud base model.

So I politely asked him to leave, and spent a month trying to find a proper glass. A friend of a friend knows a guy who has one, and HOPEFULLY it will arrive this week. It's an OEM one in the original packaging and is definitely clear.

Fingers crossed we're back on the road soon.

Saw this and it reminded me of what I had on the garage wall, original plate from a showroom car smile

I suppose I ought to update this thread, what with it being a year! I'm not sure any updates on this car really belong on PH, but here we go nonetheless.

The glass was replaced quite swiftly by my mate between lockdowns.

I tarted the back up a bit.

Went viral a tiny bit.

Forced my wife to drive it, much to her eternal chagrin.

Participated in the village "lockdown motorshow"

Took it on a short jolly to visit Kings, Cambridge.

And FINALLY made it look like a Sierra from the back as well as the front.

Love it. I particularly like the angle that the most base model is one of the rarest. Fantastic stuff.

This is a very PH car IMO. Love to see it!

Although I do admire its originality, I do wish it was one of those run-out specials with a name badge that takes up the whole rear bootlid. Something very sierra about that to me.

This is brilliant. Well done for keeping it going.

I dropped a car off at a small garage a few years back and was offered a courtesy car for the day. It turned out to be a 1984 Sierra 2.0 GL in beige with chocolate brown interior.

I wasn't too impressed but as it was just for the day it didn't really matter. What surprised me was how well it drove. Really smooth, comfortable, decent performance from the 2.0 Pinto and relaxed in 5th at speed. This one had starship mileage on it and was just an old hack but, but it was still a decent drive and must have been excellent when new. It was a lot of fun to drive something so different too and I went home and then back to the garage via the scenic route just to enjoy the car.

Keep the post coming.

Brilliant! Dad had Sierras as company cars in the 80s, still love the nostalgia the jelly mould invokes.

Last one I saw was in Dakar, Senegal, about 4 years ago. It was on the main road but missing a wheel and propped up on bricks. Must’ve been there 2 weeks before it moved again.

This thread brings up some great memories of childhood. My Dad had three Sierras in all.

1984 Sierra 2.0 GL (hatch) in white. Almost a base model. I remember it being much more stylish than his previous car (a 1977 Cortina), but still quite spartan inside.

1986 Sierra 2.0 GLSi (Sapphire) in red. Quite a sporty looking thing, with more toys than the white one.

1990 Sierra 2.0i Ghia (hatch) in red. I coveted this car, being as it had alloys, 4x electric windows, and the DOHC engine. Very nice.

After he was done with the Ghia, he moved onto a 1994 Mondeo. It had A/C. We were beside ourselves.

I still love this thread, and car. Nice to see you still have it and you're looking after it. Base cars are still inherently cool for some reason.

Many thanks for the update, keep them coming!

This is still my favourite thread in Readers Cars, beats any high end exotica anyday.

Great to see it being used as nature intended!
