6 months. Thats all I lasted without a Volvo.
You may remember my V70R, and those longer standing members may recall I also had a XC70 Ocean race for 18 months before (which I purchased by accident), but that thread no longer exists.
Well I couldn't stay away from the pipe and slippers brand and have just picked up another XC70. This time a 2007 D5 with the 6 speed auto box. I'd forgotten how boat like it is, but I think this one looks ace! It was pretty cheap too, considering how much I've been watching others sell for over the last few weeks. Its on 141k and wears them miles well. Its one of the later versions and has the pop up sat nav, sunroof and the upgraded HU850 headunit. It was also pretty local, so I've just collected on my lunch and driven the 11 miles home and it seemed to run well. I'd forgotten how awesome the seats are. So comfy.
I'm not sure there will be much interest, but I'll keep the thread updated. First things on the list are new tyres all round and to polish the crazed headlights. Its recently been serviced which is a bonus, but I'll probably fit new discs and pads all round too as they've seen better days. Then I'm into wafting central. Feels much more me than a Panda 100HP, however much fun thats been over the last 6 months.
Few (rubbish) pictures where it will remain till I've sold the Panda. Anyone want to buy a Panda?!

Lovely. Do you mind if I ask how much you paid?
I picked up a poverty-spec 2001 V70 140 manual off eBay late last year as a winter hack around for under 500 quid. It's the complete antithesis of anything else I've owned but I'm getting quite attached to the old bus. Something like this may well be on the horizon if I can justify the additional cost...
Anything you need to look out for with the auto box and/or AWD system?

Hi, nice car, I have the later 2008 model V70 awd on 150k miles (one owner, full Volvo history), as you say lovely wafting car and they are so heavy -1.7t. Had ours just over a year (7k miles) & it has cost a lot - rear diff rebuild, haldex unit seized at 77mph taking the referbed diff, prop & one drive shaft with it. Boot lock broke (volvo only part), ac condenser (well it is illegal for any car dealer to sell a car with fully functioning ac), got the gear box oil changed as a precaution. Hoping for more luck in the next 6 months or I’m off for a Honda....
The new car looks lovely.
Quite a timely thread. I will hopefully be the owner of a 2008 XC70 3.2 petrol auto tomorrow. Purchased by accident following a cheeky EBay bid on Thursday - had been looking at getting a Lexus GS300. The Volvo replaces a Golf R which was preceded by a MINI JCW, which was preceded by a 280 bhp MX5. The driving experience may be a little different from what I'm used to, but I'm looking forward to having a comfy auto to waft about in, as my car is predominantly used in heavy traffic fighting my way to the office. I'm just rather worried by it throwing up a big bill being over 200,000 miles, but with a full Volvo SH I'm hoping it's got a few years left in it.

Haha. Volvos are a disease!
1hr spent buffing up those front lights will make a world of difference.
Did you ever buy a copy of VIDA with a Dice machine? Certainly worth doing. I had that engine in my XC90 and they can be prone to sensor errors.
One correct diagnosis via your own VIDA more than pays you back the investment cost. You will also be able to manually regen the DPF and other such things.
Good luck! You know as well as me by now that they are great when they work, but expensive when they don't. To be honest, an 07 is really getting on for one of the last, and the niggles were more or less ironed out.
Will be a good car I reckon!
That was my theory. Get a late one and it should be pretty sound. Never got VIDA but my friendly local has all the proper Volvo gear. One thing I have noticed is on the drive home yesterday the MPG was pretty poor. 30 average. Did wonder if something wasn't quite right.1hr spent buffing up those front lights will make a world of difference.

Good work.
We seem to follow similar paths... I debated an XC70 and a V70 T5 and the V70R not long ago and figured I'd find the XC a bit too compromised, ie fabulous for wafting around and trying to get stuck doing things a Volvo shouldn't do but lacking the pace and road holding that the 18 year old chav in my still craves every so often. So, bought the R and immediately got annoyed at the harsh ride and it's ability to generate biblical bills.
Must admit, I do find myself looking at XC's and thinking "Hmmm, that'd make more sense..." however a mate recently bought a phase 3 and fell out of love with it pretty fast, thus I think this era are probably the best bet in terms of spec / reliability / value so will be interesting to see how you get on with it and how it compares to the R as a day in, day out car.
Cheers

Yep, I just chopped in my 160k 2003 S80 2.0t SE for an 80k 2003 2.4 SE.I've never owned the same car twice, let alone one after the other!

Tons! The earlier ones came with a 5 speed box which goes wrong. This one had the more desirable 6 speed box. Earlier ones AWD is prone to breaking, this one has upgraded stuff as it's a later model. Edited by S100HP on Saturday 20th January 11:40
Great car OP. I'm a bit of a serial-owner too, and currently have a 2006 V70 T5 Ocean Race as the family lugger. We really like it.
Before I bought my very first Volvo in 1998 (new, tax-free) a pal said once you start there's no going back, and although I've opted-in and out over the years, I've had 6 or 7 in total and 'get' the appeal.

You sound like an expert, I'm sure I'm going to regret asking this, but is there anything to be weary of on the 3.2 auto? As mentioned I've bought it on a bit of a whim, without doing sufficient research, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed - due to pick it up in an hour.Edited by S100HP on Saturday 20th January 11:40

Far from an expert, kapiteinlangzaam is the man you need! They are addictive. Had 5 x V70 in a row after my 850. Still think the P1 V70 T5 was a the mould breaker (even if it was mostly new clothes!).
Thinking of replacing my MBenz and so went to view the new S90, Sadly nothing in the range to compete with an E350 or BMW 530/535.
Given it is for mile munching duties.................peek at S80 D5s and trying to justify a 3 year old car, simply to get another Volvo = MADNESS.
