I'm often surprised how reasonable some bits are (for older BMWs) direct from the dealer rather than online/eBay etc.
I got paid to learn how to fix them! An apprenticeship then Technician training. I then ran my own business for a few years.

My last three cars have been E46s. Pics to follow as the IPhone update is crashing.
Ah, hence the skills. cool

As you know. I've just purchased my first E46. Had 3x E36s though (325iA saloon, 328i saloon and the most recently departed 328i touring).

New clutch arrived today, not a bad price from ECP, £128:

It’s an E60 525/530d clutch which can take more power/torque than the 330d one.

Sadly my SAC aligning kit doesn’t have the correct tool so I’ll have to buy one:

Just need a flywheel now.

The used 6 speed box needs a new selector shaft seal, so I bought a gen BMW seal and the special tool to fit:

I fitted non gen seals to these before and had them leak slightly, hence going for a gen seal and the correct tool rather than a deep socket.

I decided to fit a new gen BMW prop cv joint as I’d rather fit all the 6 speed bits and have them working well and staying reliable:

It wasn’t cheap.

Filled with SKF’s finest CV grease.

The car’s due a service in 1500 miles so a new air filter arrived today:

I’ve got oil, oil filters, fuel filter and a crankcase breather filter already.

The o/s dipped beam had been intermittently n/w. It’s a xenon so the fault could be bulb, ignitor or control unit on the light.

I swopped the bulbs n/s to o/s, fault stayed on the o/s. This left the ecu or ignitor. I didn’t fancy swopping these, used ones seem to be £30-40 each.

I bought a used headlight for £90 and fitted that.

Whilst I was in the light area I had a good used fog light to replace the manky o/s one.

The car’s due a service this week so started tonight with a new pollen filter.

New gen BMW filter:

Old filter:

10k miles/6 months worth of dirt. All parts are with me now for the 6 speed swop, just waiting for warmer times to fit them.

Helix, I don't know how you find the time to change the pollen filter on these. One of those spring clips getting stuck is a day ruiner.

I joke, of course. I found mine all came out quite grotty after 10k. I do them every service.

The ease of working on E46s is one of the best bits of owning one!

Insp 2 yesterday, new parts:

6.75l of Elf LL04 5w30:

Diagnostic check, no faults:

Diagnostic setup (with interior in need of a vacuum):

All done:

The rear tyres are wearing rapidly both in the centre and on the inner edge, probably due to them being cheapish Vreidesteins and me not checking the pressure often enough. They grip well but I’ll spend more next time.

The car also needs new front anti roll bar bushes, I thought it might as there is a slight knock from the n/s/f. All the other suspension is new. I’ve gone for gen BMW bushes as I know they will fit. Not cheap though at £54 for a pair of 27mm M3 Conv ones.

I'm glad it's not just me getting through rear tyres. I blame pressures too; both wheels were a little ropey at holding air.

And I wish mine came back that clean on the fault codes! All 6 glow plugs plus a hand full of other non-urgent items.

I’ve done the glow plugs apart from one which was well seized. I decided 5 out 6 working would be good enough!

Though to be honest 6 dead ones on an old M57 aren’t the end of the world.

I’m still enjoying your threads helix , looking forward to the 6 speed conversion

My 330d daily is just coming up to 10/11 years of ownership can’t remember which as it’s been part of the family for as long as I can remember

In the next 2 weeks It’s getting a very long overdue 3 years 12k service and some other bits that have been on the to do list

Out of curiosity is the 6 speed conversion purely for the benefit of being able to handle more power ?

As I had mine converted to 5 speed 2 years ago when the autobox died I had the opportunity for the 6 speed conversion but it worked out £200 more

Yes, the 6 speed is due the increase in power. The main point is the flywheel can cope with extra torque better.

Couldn't drop in the box from a 3.0SD or pre LCI 335d?

The 335ds are all autos, I don’t know if a 3.0SD box would fit. I have a 330Cd box.
