So what exactly do they fail on?
Electrics. We owned this exact model/trim, albeit in wagon form. At the time we needed cheap, reliable, comfy wheels.
The one we found was a 41k, one old boy owner, FSH, recent cam belt.

It was a very competent reliable car for 2 years, and a very nice steer.

We then changed it for a 15 plate Insignia, and it was left standing a few months, with the new purchase being around Christmas 2016. Then the battery died, no biggy we thought. Wrong. When charged up the dash was lit up like a Christmas tree and it wouldn't start. £120 paid to an Auto Electrician, who couldn't sort it. £80 paid to tow it to Renault Nottingham. £300 paid to them to try and sort it, they couldn't.

Also, don't let anyone other than Renault change the batteries, there is a certain way it needs doing.

The car was a financial right off. A two owner, excellent condition 80k car, scrap.

So, my advice, don't leave it standing around unused.

You may not have discovered a neat detail on it. Pull the bottom of the headrest forwards, it comes out. Think of it as an upside down V, to support the base of your head. It's very effective, a nice little detail.

Seen the headrest! Also has one of the easiest release mechanisms I’ve seen to move them.

This one had been sat in a garage with a flat battery and has no warning lights. Maybe that one was chewed by a rodent?

I’ll update as things progress. Got the excitement of a “Cabasse” head unit on the way!

Maybe, but it was annoying as hell. That aside it was one of the tidiest examples you could hope to find.

Others for sale do seem more tidy than the equivalent VAG. Certainly better for rust.

Paid £400 for a Laguna 2 205 GT , rare top of the range, 55 plate , 68k decent condition. A year later I wish I'd never touched with a barge pole :0).

It’s got one but it’s working okay, if a little battered.

How bad was it? I was trying to find one a while ago...

Still have it, I have little patience, it hasn't been so bad , but when a car has so little value it's hard to justify keep spending. In a year - and only 2k miles it's had fuel tank cleaned and loom to tank repaired - common problem apparently, recovered twice. fluid damper went and it had a new crankshaft pulley and belt, recovered once. Last week lost clutch pedal 1 day after it passed it's MOT ( with no advisories) , taxed and filled with petrol! Garage took pity and came to my house to fix it - they take pity on me now :0). To be fair last issue was caused by poor maintenance, fluid had never been changed. It drives well when it goes, detuned version of the 225 lump and ride handling compromise is excellent and its usefully large without being too big. My mates GS 300 Lexus shed has had zero faults in 12 years :0)

Interior has seen the suction end of a Dyson.

You can see here where the head unit isn't flush.

Seats are nice!

Other than the ugly steering wheel, the handbrake and gear stick gaiters are knackered. Seems like this is common.

I had a Mk1 laguna with the 1.8 engine (not sure if it is the same) and that car was great no problems at all.

I bought the MK2 IDE Initiale as I though it would be the same but with more toys. From memory :

1)Tyre pressure sensors would log a fault 50% of the time to the point where I had to pull the fuse to clear it.
2)Single Cabasse CD player would not play CDs.
3)While removing the CD player the electrics went completely crazy to the point where I thought I had killed the car. Turned out to be a dead battery. This also fixed the temperamental starting issue.
4)Misfile, turned out the IDE engine must have the correct spark plugs fitted, this one didn't
5)Sunroof leaked, turned out to be blocked drainage holes which exit under the front wheelarch linings. When I took these off there were hand fulls of mud blocking the end of the pipes.
6)Sat nav would just turn off for no reason.
7)If you type 2.0 IDE into google the autotext comes up with "fuel pressure regulator". Twice this car went into limp mode with an 1800rpm rev limit leaving me stranded. The best thing was the car had a synthesised voice that would mock you saying "Fuel Injection fault, consult your Renault dealer" as the people behind sounded their horns and shouted abuse at you.

The fuel injection warning bong was the same as the low fuel bong meaning you got a sickening feeling the car was about to break down every time you ran low on fuel.

That was it, on ebay spares or repairs.

I have one of these on an 06 plate with 88k on the clock.

Good car although it is a bit sluggish when pulling away from a standing start. Goes well though once it gets wound up.

Had mine on SORN for 3 months as I bought a BMW & although I start it almost daily I think the battery has given up so a new one needed I think.

Also the heater blower has stopped working which is annoying although shouldn’t be too difficult to sort out.

I do like my Laguna so the BMW will be moved on when I can be arsed to advertise it & the Laguna will be back in service.

Be careful if yours has a sunroof. The drain tubes exit down by the front wheels, like every other manufacturer. However, unlike every other manufacturer, Renault puts a little plastic one way valve on the end of each tube. The valves clog up and then block, probably because they are behind the wheel arch liner behind the wheel, so there is plenty of mud sloshing around, especially at this time of year. This leads to water getting trapped in the tube, backing up and leaking around the sunroof into the interior of the car. Unclip the wheel arch liner and pull the valves off the end of the tube. You may find quite a lot of trapped water comes out and the leaking problem either disappears, or never appears in the first place.

Exciting update time...

Old head unit, wrong size and low output from a Megane.

Replacement Laguna Cabasse head unit, much better.

Also fixed the boot light, it had burnt out in the past and melted. A bit of fiddling and a new bulb, sorted.

Thrilling!

Oh and luckily, no sunroof on this. I hate the things because they steal valuable headroom.

I run one of these as a shed too. An 04 1.9DCI on 115k miles. Given to me, for free by my father in law.

It is a bit shonky- the radio is knackered, the power steering pump is weeping and all the awful plastics are brittle, so any time you try to remove a bit of trim to service something it snaps or cracks.

Aside from that it hasn't cost anything other than standard service items for the last 2 years and does 50mpg on a run. I've got to replace the rear axle bushes for the next MOT which looks like a pig of a job though....

That's a great looking ride for £600. Please keep us updated!

Why go for an OEM headunit? Surely some pioneer monstrosity would be more use with an aux-in?

I suspect that the remote control on the steering column/Dash display will only work with a Reanult head unit.

The head unit was just over £30. I really dislike non-OE equipment in cars, just my preference!

i bought an 07 dCi in 2011, very low mileage (25k i recall) and i think it was 6k. main dealer so i got a 1 year pukka warranty too. aside from a turbo related sensor and a pair of track rod ends it was a brilliant car, being reliable, durable, spacious and a comfy economical cruiser. sold it 5 years later at about 80k miles for just under 2k. still going strong apparently!
