Sensible family daily wagon - Mercedes Benz S211 E500
Discussion
Amusingly, I see that this thread is one of just a handful within the first few pages to have exceeded one thousand posts.
Thanks for having contributed to the fun.
I gave it a once over yesterday with BH Touchless foam and a drying rag -- no wash mitt used as I was short on time and I had the FFRR to do still.
I was curious as it had been washed a few days earlier following the service and haven't been able to appreciate the results in the daylight with a fully dry vehicle. Hopefully it'd've worked well and I won't've streaked it to buggery.
Oh, I spoke to my 'the Man' too and he says that there was a miscommunication whilst he was away and that the coolant had actually been changed, as evidence by the clear red liquid. To my shame, I'm not 100% certain where this is under the engine bay, but I presume this:
It looks like a container in as new condition, blacks sun clear plastic below. The coolant:
Oh and in case anyone *cough* Sharp Eyes *cough* was misled by. my 'in motion' belt shots above and suspected that it had been mounted inside out, a clearer shot.

So the quick wash didn't work out too badly but there is minor grazing that I cannot recall whether it was there before or not, so I'll stick to using the mitt in future, but need to definitely invest in a 0ppm filter for convenient rinse and go.
An quick update -- I dropped the car off on Sunday as they had a key and asked them to appraise the pulley(s) sound on start up when cold and the irregular rhythm on idle. Perhaps they'll look at it tomorrow and drop it off, then we'll be ready for Venice, avoiding France.
As a bonus, however, they didn't quite get the message and went hunting for a fix to the rear headrests which didn't pop up (or down, I don't recall now) and they found it! A break in the vacuum line! As one of the original functions that wasn't working when I inherited the vehicle, Im inordinately happy to have a feature that is ready to do my bidding as I reimagine myself as the captain of industry that purchased this 'thinking man's AMG' when new. What a saddo -- but you're here too, so I'm in fine company.

Great to catch up on your trips and how the 500 is doing. I didnt realise that the rear headrests are on a vacuum line. I have a similar issue with my newly acquired w211 whereby one headrest goes down but the other two don’t. Further investigation required.
Regarding washing, I use a Meguires bucket with a separator at the bottom combined with a lambs wool mitt from the same company. Seems to work well for me.

This morning was PH Sunday Service, just down the road from me at MB World Brooklands.
It was great to catch up with a number of friendly faces and even another S211 E500 recently purchased in January, that I have subsequently realised was owned by another PHer and bargeiste, nblr.
I'm still suspicious of the ride height after the shocks were replaced, in spite of the measurements being okay.
There's also a rattle that has returned to the rear, despite the successful alleviation of the symptoms further to the replacement of the clips in January.
However, on a positive note, I fished out the middle headrest that has never folded down, from the garage where it t languishes... and it folds on a button press! I'll get a video for posterity, once my excitement subsides.

I received the bill for the service -- not good bad considering the extensive servicing work done with a whole load of things to catch up on. In fact, the only thing that I didn't do was to lubricate the sunroof.
The spark plugs take quite a long time to change! Over two hours charged...
Next up is a trip to Venice... I'll be leaving from Harwich to Hook of Holland on the overnight ferry which departs at 11pm and arrives at 8am. That seems very convenient, I'll have a whole day driving on autobahnen and will crash somewhere pleasant before continuing on to Venice. I'll have to pick up a ten day Austrian motorway toll pass too, from a petrol station in/around the border.

Meh, just a line item entry that's of no significance, in my view. I suppose that they may have had four in stock and ordered an additional twelve, recording them as they went along.
The service book... my first one in now full. I ordered one off ebay, but the font looked stretch and the size was different. I asked the seller if this was a geniune OEM item, he palmed me off with an immediate response that was quite oblique in its meaning and then refunded me in full!

I do like that Ferry, very calming. Although it does seem to take an age to get moving once you are off the boat, unlike the Calais option where you get straight on the Autoroute.
Could very possibly be a poor choice of route by the wife, but will be interesting to hear your thoughts.
Enjoy the trip!

Actually, I haven't made my plans clear and they are coming together now (I think I may be getting rather good at this!).
Wednesday evening: Your's truly leaves SW London and drives to Harwich... loaded with luggage for the entire family but driving solo.
Thursday: Weeeeee! Autobahnen and freedom -- sod you greedy French police!
Friday: Over the Dolomites and into Venice Marco Polo to collect wife and daughter
Tuesday: Collect son who is finishing his choir tour of Venice and drive to Salzburg
Wednesday: Go to see the spring/bottling facility of an Austrian water company with whom we have embarked on a commercial relationship
Thursday: Leave Salzburg and drive on the autobahnen. My idea is to encourage Mrs BoMi to ' 'ave a go ' at high speeds at some stage (if I can convince her to drive with two hands on the steering wheel!) to our destination of...
the Nordschleife, as I have one lap remaining on my card from last year's visit on the VFR1200F and I've managed to bag a quadruple room at the Hotel an Tiergarten which hosts the Pistenklause restaurant downstairs! I'm so excited to take the fully loaded E500 around -- thanks to GallonsPerMile for the inspiration.
Friday: Drive home via the chunnel (Mrs BoMi can drive the short stretch through France), perhaps stopping in Ghent for a spot of lunch.
