E60 M5, AKA the wallet drainer.

Hopefully they can sort it in a reasonable amount of time and you can have some time to enjoy the car.
I bought a 645 3 years ago as a stopgap (that I'm now keeping) and at the time I was considering taking the extra step to early M6 due to budget creep.
These sort of bills were the main reason I decided against it. But to look at it as an outsider, you've done a fair bit of preventative maintenance and been unlucky with a couple of admittedly very expensive repairs. If you hadn't done so much in the first place would you be so annoyed by the current issues?
Provided that the garage can get the engine sorted out you should have a bloody epic car that you've covered all of the likely failure points on.
Ideally I'd get it fixed, drive it for a few months and see how you feel about it. The ownership experience may be tainted permanently but the car may be enough to outshine that.
I've had some pretty hefty bills on the 645, lower than yours but they do add up to an amount I don't feel the need to share with my wife. But I like the car enough to fix it if it breaks and keep enjoying it in the meantime.

For what it’s worth Welshbeef is a plum sack but a plum sack I like. He may come across as abrasive but a lot of this is because he plays devils advocate and asks the difficult questions.
We need more Welshbeefs on this forum.
Back on topic. What’s the short story on this? Had shells done, failed soon after?

There are ways of playing devils advocate. Changing agenda mid point isn't one of them. Saying I should fix, and then saying that I should not when I then say I will fix is basically how a bellend replies. We need more Welshbeefs on this forum.

Re your question, yes but no. It may not be the shells. If it is something else then I have a bill coming my way.

Same decision for me 7 years ago. I went for a 2005 650, but I always regretted not getting the M6, until I read this thread. I agree with a previous poster who said get it fixed and run it for 6 months and hopefully you will fall back in love with it. Good luck!I bought a 645 3 years ago as a stopgap (that I'm now keeping) and at the time I was considering taking the extra step to early M6 due to budget creep.
Had a quick skim through the thread.
As an observation I’m not sure I’d be willing to entrust major works on such a specialist car to a company that uses FB messages to communicate- seems brave! Alarm bells would be sounding the minute a good old telephone or email couldn’t generate a response....
Wishing you well on a speedy & skilled repair however!
