This is gonna melt your brain, but if someone offered me a mint R34 GTR V-Spec II Nur in Millennium Jade versus a choice of McLarens, I would almost certainly take the R34.
I often pop on this thread in hope of seeing pics! Anyway, I'm with you Jimi, if I had the funds [which I most certainly don't], I'd have an R34 over almost anything - I love a cult car, it's an object of desire, I really want one!
I would take a lot of older cars over modern, from a driving fulfilment point of view I find the 90s stuff a nice balance before too many electrical aids, and when there were good cars and bad cars not just shades of good
On an emotional level, the R34 GTR just makes me giddy - any Skyline GTR does. I could also just sit and look at any of them, no McLaren this side of the F1 has that effect on me, no matter how fast or capable they are (to respond to Pete's point about picking a McLaren over the R34)
Might be a bit of an assumption, but as someone who's driven most old school jap stuff, the skylines have never had that effect on me. Something like an NSX, yeah I can get pretty excited about, but GTRs never have appealed like that. It's probably as I was very much active in the scene when an r34 gtr was circa £20k, r32's could be bought in great condition for £5k etc. Seeing them go for £100k+ makes absolutely no sense, as a car to drive. At thay sort of value, sure it'll go in a collection as an asset, but it would never be something I would actually drive. They never were that great in my opinion (yeah modified they can be awesome, but that's not where the value is these days). If you're gonna have a drivers car these days then there are so many better options. They've just never given me thay fizz, and as I said, I've spent a lot of Time around them.
Therein lies the beauty of personal opinion.

As to your point about there being better driver's cars, I don't think that was ever in question. The old Japanese stuff was mentioned in the context of 2manycars saying that he'd rather buy a McLaren and save a few quid over spending the money on an R34 GTR, and I was simply saying the opposite.

I was commenting on how these things make me feel on an emotional level, having experienced them in the flesh; not a comment on their ability as "driver's cars", as if that was the sole criteria, I'd choose plenty others smile

Pete, are you interested in modifying cars at all, or is that a waste of money to you?

it's absolutely insane how expensive they are, haven't looked in years but was baffled to see how many are £130,000+!

evo's are so much more expensive than they used to be too, £40k for a nice one now

Any thought for the F50 at DK Pete? Pretty much perfection for me I think.

Hi Pete,

Hope you and the family are well.

I've just seen this on social media, and know you are close with the guys at Ferrari, is it something you have been invited to a launch event for or similar? I remember you've enjoyed them in the past.

Yes but it’s just a web launch, it’s the F8 Tributo replacement (already FFS). It’s the V6 hybrid, I’ve already seen the artwork for it.
This is where I bow out from Ferrari now as I’m not for those V6 engines.
I’ve got the 812 Competizione coming and that will probably be the last modern Ferrari I’ll buy.

Thanks for sharing, interesting to hear.

Shame you are bowing out, but understand the reasoning. There is a life time of hybrid and electric ahead so enjoy crazy engines from their "back catalogue" whilst you can!

Shame you didn't get one last piss up at a launch to see you on your way tho!

Not at the moment, I’ve got too many coming through that I haven’t even driven yet. Adding the F50 so soon would just be a ‘meh’ moment when I really want it to be a ‘wow’ moment.

That's a pity. There's SO much stuff I'd do, if I had your resources!

I’ve got the SF90 coming any day now and I took one out for a test drive the other week and was extremely underwhelmed. The hybrid technology just leaves it feeling soulless, it’s not always about the speed for me. That’s why I love little fast hatches like the M2 CS or the 1M.

Yes but why are we talking about gender reassignment now!!!! laugh

The only thing I’d do is drop an RS3 engine and running gear into a Skoda Yeti.

There's this one using a TTRS engine (assume they use the same engine) tuned to 510BHP!!!

Love it!
