Wonderful - I'm seeing one tomorrow, a 4.6 V8, 140k but with last owner for 12 years and full history (we'll see).
I've had cars off this dealer before and he always seems pretty straight and honest. We'll see what happens........
Indeed. Yet to ever see a car where full history was exactly that. Post some pics, whatever happens!I've had cars off this dealer before and he always seems pretty straight and honest. We'll see what happens........

Issue number 376. Part of the HVAC lighting is out.
Hopefully you are all enjoying your P38s, fellow owners.
Can you tell where the car was reved up? Hehe.
I changed the offside wing mirror today, only for it to have the same issue as the original ! Got to love eBay parts.
The car is going to a garage tomorrow to have a look at few things and also to fix the brake fluid leak. I’ll try and get some pics.

Update:
My local mechanic commented that it was the best P38 he'd ever seen. Which either means this one is good, or all the others are terrible.
Sitting nicely on the ramp. Easy when it is body on frame.
Unfortunately, the brake fluid leak has turned out to be a diff oil leak. That diff replacement is about to be fast tracked.
New steering damper about to go on.
They are going to fit new, genuine engine mounts, tighten up a loose boost hose and then de-grease to spot other leaks. Should come out a winner, but i'll take the car back tomorrow and re-book once the diff has been ordered/arrived.-

Not sure how a diff leak could be confused for a brake fluid leak. You'd know if you were losing brake fluid as the pedal would feel awful, and the fluid level would drop.
Also don't see why you are replacing the entire diff to fix a leak?
Replacing it because, if you look above, it is knackered and it whines. Also don't see why you are replacing the entire diff to fix a leak?
Confusing because there was a previous repair on that corner and the fluid on the floor appeared to be the viscosity of brake fluid and the ABS pump takes some time to prime.

Sorry can’t see anything showing a knackered diff. Has it actually beeen pulled from the axle? Anyhow your money. I’m just guessing that replacing it either won’t solve any whine or will be an expensive way of doing it. The p38 axles are the strongest variant of the Rover axles. But maybe you have just been unlucky. Brake fluid is very different to the diff EP90 oil. Brake fluid will feel sticky ok your fingers once the wetness has gone.
Also not sure what you mean by Abs pump???? There is an orange warning light on the dash at start up. But it will stay on until you reach 5mph. This is it working normally.
There is/was massive amount of swarf in the oil. There is a picture of the magnet. The oil that was then replaced and is now leaking also contains metal fragments. I’m not sure that could be considered normal.
It was confused because of the location of the leak and the wet patch on concrete on the drive. It wasn’t investigated properly and was assumed. When on the lift and looking, it’s clearly oil and not brake fluid.
If we could move on from these points now.

One point, I’d youre anyway near south lincs my uncle runs a Land Rover specialist garage.what he doesn’t know about these....(well, he’d tell you not to buy one in the first place!)
Anyone claiming to be a LR specialist and would then say don't buy one of these is talking utter tosh tbh.MJ85 said:

I can't see a pic of a magnet? Maybe it got removed? It was confused because of the location of the leak and the wet patch on concrete on the drive. It wasn’t investigated properly and was assumed. When on the lift and looking, it’s clearly oil and not brake fluid.

Either-way, metal in the oil could be lots of things tbh. And you have a pic showing the oil leak at the hub end, which would suggest a hub seal. Replacing the diff won't solve this.
It is possible if the axle has been run dry, that it has done the bearings in the diff. Or it could have worn the crownwheel badly, but you'd only be able to tell this by pulling the diff. Was only trying to help you out, is your vehicle and money at the end of the day.

I'm south Lincs, where is your Uncle's garage? (not a Land Rover owner myself but know a few owners)olly22n said:
Oh do fk off mate.
Look I'm not making a personal dig to your relative. But anyone who specialises in a marque and then claims you should stay away is not exactly being helpful are they. One would have to ask why they bother specilaising in something they won't recommend.Grille that protects the auto box oil cooler is on. Turns out the original was there, but was missing its grille (looks like they are glued on, so may have fallen off).
Looking better.
A friend has just taken out a lease on an XC90. It is costing £750 a month... making me feel a little better about the initial costs on this P38!

I think of bills on my old Merc in terms of many months lease payments they'd be - took just 3 mths payments to get it through MOT!Sheepshanks said:
