What’s the plan for the gearbox?

Did this generation have paddles? Could you replace the current torque converter for something else lighter and more sporting?

You've inspired me - I never thought so much car was available for so little money. I couldn't find an s/c one, but collected an '05 FFRR 4.4 V8 yesterday, so now got a P38 4.6 and an L322 4.4!

This is awesome!

Ive always wondered how fast my old A8 4.2 tdi would have been if it was gutted completely. Or my old S55 AMG (M113K)

I think a stripped CL600 would be fking nuts.

Following with interest!

Hey all!

We have been too quiet for a little while now. While I've been off skiing Ryan and Simone have been doing some great work!

We have managed to track down some HUGE 6 pot brembos from the later range rover, looking forward to fitting these and seeing much more stopping power we have.

They chaps have also been very busy stripping the rest of the cabin, headlining, dash, centre console it's all gone! Also have our new wheel in, e46 bmw wheel boss fits like a dream! (Yet another benefit of our car being developed under BMW ownership).

They gents even had time to cut off the tow bar and surrounding steel work.

Our bucket seat mounts should arrive this werk, as soon as we get them in we will go get the "lighter" beast weighed in post fat camp.

Have you looked into removing the ballast weights behind the rear bumper that were mentioned earlier in the thread?

Couldn't agree more! Looks great, There is no better value out there in my opinion, we are seriously tempted to get one as a daily, maybe even use it as a tow car for the range racer?

Not yet but will do, we have a friend with a ramp so hoping to have a good poke around under the car soon and remove anything we can get our hands on!

Are you thinking of removing the sunroof and associated gubbins and fit a composite replacement. That will make it lot less top heavy. And a lot less roly.

This is fantastic! Past the point of no return, and some!
I assume you'll trailer it to future events?

That's the plan, along with some plastic windows to lower the centre of gravity as much as possible!

Sadly it didn't have paddles, not thought too much about it so far, it does have a sequential mode but the gear Leaver is the wrong way round (currently push forward to change up). So we might try to rewire that at some point.

Love it. Any build thread that involves application of a lump hammer (or mallet) to a luxurious interior is with celebrating.
Looking forward to the write up of your next track day.

I may be well wrong for your car, but the E46’s were wrong and it was a easy cable change to swap direction. Maybe worth a look. Although I’m sure you have better info at your disposal!

Great project, following with interest!

I expect you could easily fit a paddle wheel too, didn't the OP mention the spline pattern is the same as an E46 anyway (I.E. SMG wheel)?

Yea probably did! It's a similar era of car, and I know they share parts, so figured it was worth mentioning, even if they did know (it makes me feel smart hehe)

Fitting paddle shifts may be a whole lot easier than you think. I have fitted paddle shifts to a 1990 3 speed auto Mitsubishi that I had twin turbo'd. It took a pre historic 4 second gear change to instantaneous GTR like shifts.

There is a company called Forced Four in the states that specialises in Shift boxes. I don't know if they have something compatible for the Rangie but the concept is dead easy. The shifts are created by intercepting the Shift solinoids, a momentary switch added inline like a horn button or paddles from another car are then wired in. The interruption in signal creates the shift..depending on which solenoid it shifts up or down. It wires into the gearbox ECU and requires a power, an earth, 2 wires to intercept Solinoid A, two for solenoid B and then an RPM pick up for torque reduction. Sounds complicated but its dead easy.

They don't seem to do the billy basic one I went for and now have loads of fancy ones that are fully programable for shift points etc.

Drop them an email and I'm sure they will help out, Great guys to deal with.

The Benchmarking track Day! And what an eventful day it was!

So on the 15th of December we took the range racer to Bedford autodrome for some benchmarking in completely standard form.

During the driver brief we were told it’s the hardest circuit in the UK for brakes……whoops!

]
I didn't know Bedford was all downhill ? As engineers surely you can work out no circuit is harder on brakes than another, unless you never need to slow down. Silverstone has some much larger braking zones.
