Took the old car along to the Mk2 Golf Owners' Club (never quite sure where that apostrophe is supposed to go!) National Meet a couple of weekends back.

It was mostly operating as a 'support car' for my son's Mk2 as he went hooning around Curborough track in his Golf CL. He won his class (non-GTIs) on the lap times though and got a trophy, so he was pretty happy. Here's him on his second fastest lap with me hanging on for dear life, pinned into my seat by the fierce acceleration of all 75 bhp being deployed in one go... wink

The Audi went into the "Other VAG show 'n' shine". Didn't win anything, but a few folks stopped to have a chat about it, including a couple from on here who'd seen the thread - so thanks and hi! wink

  • These two pics by "Well Chuffed Media" - thanks for being able to use them. smile
She looked all right parked up there in the sun with a little plaque with her history on. Drive up and back was as unremarkable and peaceful as ever - though it was a bit of a "scene from the 90s" with the Audi mixed in amongst a bunch of Mk2 Golfs on the motorway - just about kept up with them!

Other than the lack of aircon, buzzy 5th gear and outright pace there's very little to complain about. Clutch noise hasn't got worse or better, so just keeping a watchful eye on the old dear.

After that she had a trip to Manchester and back to pick up my other son and a stop overnight at a Travelodge. Oh, the glamour. Still not missing a beat though. 550 miles on a tank and 42 mpg. Can't complain.

Cheers,

Drew.

Ever thought of removing the spoiler....they are a bit 'marmite' I guess, but although they were quite fashionable 'in the day', I doubt if they actually 'do' anything at normal road speeds !

I must admit it's not really my thing and it might look better without it. However, it's part of the car's original SE trim (along with the alloys, seats, steering wheel and gauges) so it would be a shame to remove the car's originality I feel.

Pretty sure it does absolutely nothing at all for the aerodynamics! smile

Drew.

What a nice looking car, from a time when Audi made truly well engineered cars that were built to last.

Fantastic result for the oldish girl .Caught up on the last few pages there.

Keep doing as you are doing, it is paying dividends!

In relation to above, keep the spoiler, it has worn it so long it would be rude to remove it.

Hopefully get myself and a mk2 to the meet next summer, maybe see the 80 in the flesh!

I run old cars as daily drivers along with the weekend toys, Audi's and BMW's fill my neighbours driveways; at least the chance of my door getting kicked in to steal keys is pretty slim lol

Very sad update I'm afraid.

It is likely that L835JCF turned its last wheel today. frown

I was hit by another driver on the M25 who undertook me, mis-judged swerving back, whilst I was passing another car. He clipped the nearside wing, this tipped me into the central reservation at 70 mph. Front right side took the brunt of it, followed by the rear. Managed to stop it spinning. Fortunately no one else hit me and I was able to get to the hard shoulder without further incident.

The other driver didn't stop. Fortunately I have a dashcam and it caught everything, including his numberplate.

Damage is, alas, extensive. Drop link and right driveshaft are hanging down. Right side wheels are both two inches pushed rearwards and suspension buckled on both. Alloys are, of course, ruined. Scrape damage down the right side of the car. And that's just on a cursory glance.

Me? I'm fine. No injuries. The car saved me. Would not liked to have had that crash in the Mx-5.

Insurance has already said it will be a total write-off. Will get my son to inspect, before I decided on next steps, but fear this is the end for this Audi 80. frown

Needless to say, weekend plans ruined and gutted for the poor car.

Drew.

What a c**t the other driver is. A convincing argument for dashcams too. Glad you are okay.

Rotten luck - very glad you're ok though, phew.

I would make enquiries before any kind of claim - When our Rover 75 was broadsided and they were hinting a write off I actually sent them my PH thread as evidence of the value and worth. It may have helped. Worth noting whatever route you pursue.

Hope you're not too shaken up, and make sure the police have all the footage - Section 170 of ol' 1988 should cover failing to stop as an offence for starters.

I assume the other driver knew what had happened?
Did you report to the police?
If not, you can trace his insurers on Ask Mid and call them and report the accident and start the claim

Glad you are ok, but sort of asshole does that and drives off

Gutted for you but glad you are okay.

The other party can be prosecuted for leaving the scene of an accident so they'll get what the deserve

I have reported to Essex police as in their area (Brentwood) - not great service and don't have much confidence in them to be honest. Have an incident number, so will follow up if I don't hear anything.

Driver was insured - my insurance company are already on the case.

Cheers,

Drew.

If the vehicle is identifiable in your footage I would be surprised if they don't prosecute due to the speed & the fact it's an easy win for them. Initial response might be poor but as others have said, make sure they know you have good footage.

I will keep on them! The vehicle is clearly identifiable. My camera is full HD.

Drew.

A few pics from underneath. Looks like the suspension took all the impact rather than the body. Bent wishbones, droplinks and driveshaft. Back axle may also be damaged. We'll have a better look tomorrow.

Cheers,

Drew.
