I had an old TDI80 B4 when I replaced the arms, links etc it was less than £200 all in, fitted and aligned, pop that wing out, smart repair, should be less than £300 surely

Glad you are Ok. Its been fun, a lovely story a and a great shame, but accidents hapen and you are fine.

If it comes to it, others will benefit from the parts from your car. Take some comfort from that...

Sorry to read that, and yes, I can't imagine any result other than write off from an insurance point of view.

But I'd say that's eminently fixable, nothing terminal in real terms. Crack on with it!

Sorry to hear of the incident OP... wrong place, wrong time. The fact you have a dashcam seems to be a saviour here. I don’t have one and so now you’ve got me thinking, particularly as I was nearly wiped out by a white van man myself this evening.

The car looks fixable if you’re willing to put the money into it, and if you’re handy enough wielding tools that’ll go along way.

Such a shame to lose a car when it’s your P & J. Have been there before. Best of luck whatever you choose to do...

That's stty luck, good you're ok and hopefully the other driver will be brought to book!

I'd definitely have the conversation with your insurer about buying it back, it's more than just a car now! As others have said it won't cost loads to repair and it would seem a shame to scrap something savable and with a greats story behind it. Even if you don't want to fix it yourself I'm sure one of us lot would take it on and add to the story, I'd definitely be interested for one!

Defo buy back I say. Too much attachment involved here.... When my pride and joy - an immaculate MK1 Octavia vRS - was side swiped by an out of control 17 year old my insurance company we're happy to sell it back to me for 10% of the perceived value. Bought back for £140! She was back in the road in no time. A decision I never regretted, unlike the one I made 6 months later to sell her.....

Really sorry to hear that. This thread has been great to read and a fantastic story - I really like to hear about interesting cars like this being saved. It’s sad the car may have met it’s end this way but keep in mind that if you hadn’t saved it, it would have probably gone to the breakers a long while back, so you’re responsible for it’s whole new lease of life and you’ve given us all a really enjoyable thread in the process.

I won’t comment on whether or not it’s saveable from a few pics but I really hope it is - it’s clearly worth a lot more to you than the insurers so if it’s not structurally damaged, I’d be tempted to rebuild it. If it’s not, genuinely this thread has been one of my favourites so thank you for sharing. I really hope there’s a next chapter!

Please buy it back and fix it. Could probably be done for a few hundred pounds.

Such a shame. Hopefully it can be repaired. Ideal job for a new apprentice at the original dealer maybe??

Sorry to hear this OP, and hopefully it’s fixable!

Nice to know the 80 looked after you when you needed her most though, a bit like my old B3 did many years ago for me

I've really enjoyed this thread, not least because of the happy memories it brought back of my own Audi 80 in the early 90s, but what a pity to hear how it ended. At least it was nothing worse than bent metal.

I'm possibly in the minority, but I'd let it go. Sentiment and cars is a dangerous(!) combo and - as you have said before - an unremarkable and largely unappreciated car is never going to attract much love and value. It also won't ever 'feel' the same once repaired, even if it's done properly (link back to the point about cars and sentiment!). I personally would chalk it up to experience and use the payout on something else.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do though, and glad that no-one was hurt.

Sorry to hear this, but like the others glad you’re okay👍. Likewise I’ve really enjoyed the journey you’ve documented here. Even my wife who doesn’t understand my passion for cars has enjoyed this story!!

IMHO If it’s not structural I’d be very tempted to have it fixed. An event like this is part of this car’s history, refusal to die and to beat the odds of survival.

Best of luck!!

Hello, I've just caught up with this thread. The 25th gesture was fantastic, I showed it to my wife also.

To me this feels like a natural end point for the car.

I am also surprised that the much discussed (in the earlier pages of this thread) Procon 10 system didn't employ in this accident.

Here's to the next chapter of your motoring adventure being as engaging to read as this one.

Such a shame given the cars history and rebirth after escaping a potential untimely death last year.

To be honest the damage doesn’t look too bad, if you can buy it back it would likely be roadworthy in a mechanical sense within a day, then sort the bodywork out with the rest of the payout?

Many options to mull over, a few beers or a bottle of wine helps in times like these to reach a decision. It would be a shame to see it scrapped.

An utter shame - I really enjoy reading this thread.

Sometimes the urge to get information after an accident can alert the third party to report the incident. I remember my uncle once being patient whilst we were all telling him to go to the Police. He did. 24 hours later, so that the third party could also be charged for failing to stop after an accident and reporting it.

Hi Folks.

An update. frown

The ProCon Ten system has tensioned, distorting the firewall. Not enough to visibly move the steering wheel, but definitely engaged.

We took the wheels off to have a look and discovered: Damaged wishbone, damaged subframe, broken droplink, broken engine mount, broken caliper, broken disk (never seen that before!) broken driveshaft, bent damper and lots of damage to the inner wing (outer wing looks curiously ok by comparison).

Turning the engine over is fine, but engaging the clutch with wheels off the ground makes a ghastly noise from gearbox/diff and no movement of driveshafts on either side. Only have two forward gears.

It seems the impact went almost straight through the centre line of the wheel. The right side drive shaft is an inch further into the diff than it should be and the diff/gearbox has taken a major shunt.

Rear axle is also trashed. The left rear wheel (untouched in collision) is about an inch outside the wheelarch and the mounting points underneath are sheered and broken. Right wheel is pushed inwards by a similar amount. Drivers door shows small but noticeable deformation to the shell of the car.

It's game over I'm afraid.

Drew.
