Something I have noticed is the revs have started sticking between gear changes and take a few seconds to drop off so you don’t get any engine braking when slowing, may have a air leak or poss IAC valve faulty. Will have to wait until next week before I have a look. Getting there!
Different vehicle I know but the fleet of Movano's we had would do this when the clutch switch failed (looks exactly like a brake light switch)
It may be nothing of the sort but worth a look

I found the culprit yesterday!

It was obviously a coincidence that the fault started after I had removed the air box and boost solenoid to fit the Snabb kit to the gearbox arm. I was certain it was an air leak of some sort so took all the air box out and re checked the various bits on the intake pipe down to the turbo and couldn’t find anything obvious. Put it back together and went out for a test run, it felt better I thought but then once warmed up it started revving up between gear changes and idle sticking at 2k, it would eventually drop to 900 ish sometimes.

A bit pissed off I gave it a boot full in 2nd and on full boost I heard pssshhhhh bang and lost all power and coasted to the side of the road where it stalled. Just a bit of luck I managed to roll onto the only bit of hard standing on the verge as it was a slip road onto dual carriage way.

It would start and then die after 2 or 3 secs and was running very rich puffing out black smoke. Pulled the MAF plug and it fired up fine and revved/idled fine. So I thought it was a dodgy MAF at first. By this time I had rung the AA as I have it on my bank account and never ever used it so thought I’ll see how good their service is! They arrived within 30 mins but by that time my mate who’s handy with the tools ( Waxaholic on PH ) had come out to me and noticed one of the boost hoses to the intercooler had popped off around the bottom of the hose so it was very difficult to see it was leaking. The clip had slipped some how and this had been my air leak all along. The AA guy was a bit grumpy tbh but thankfully popped it back on as we had no tools with us.

Once home we took the RIP kit pipe right off and re aligned it correctly as it had also been rubbing on the cam cover in 3 places and wouldn’t have been long before it would have rubbed through.

Will keep an eye on it and check it every now again to make sure it’s not coming loose as the lip on the i cooler is quite shallow so not much to grip.

Lesson learnt, make sure you have a small tool kit in the car to sort simple breakdowns like this!
It was this joint here that was leaking.

Pipe was rubbing in the middle and at the back.

Welcome to the world of the Iconic Cream Yellow 850 T5Rs. Mine's a manual estate and I'm in love!! What you say is right about sourcing a manual. Only 38 Cream Yellow manual estates and 28 manual saloons were imported by Volvo. Now rare as hens teeth and going up in value all the time!

Collected these today. Very pleased as they are hard to get hold of, genuine Titans. Need painting in Anthracite and correct tyres 205/45/17 as currently have XC70 tyres which are like balloons!
I recall the selection of tyres on 205s were vastly reduced compared to the 215s. Good luck

I’ve already got 205/45/17 Falkens on the car but on the other set I’m gong to fit Yokohama AD08R which are available in 205/45/17

Great thread, looking forward to following this!

Tim Williams did the block mod on my mk2 Focus ST, he's a legend with these motors.

Are the earlier T5 motors as susceptible to cracked cylinder liners the same as the later ones appear to be?
No.
The 2.3 lump in the T-5R doesn’t suffer that. It’s the later 2.5 in the 2003 onwards V70 S60 R.

It’s going to be a while before that happens!

Lovely car!

I had one of the manual estate a few years back... bought as a bit of a basket case, threw it back on the road and pretty much used and abused it as any Volvo estate should be. It was rather amusing having such a thing but deploying a zero f**ks attitude towards it. I did debate investing some time and money but it would have been a bottomless pit given it was pretty rotten and in need of a complete rebuild, which I'm very pleased to say it got but just not by my doing. It was for sale last I heard, five figures but justifiable. I'd love another but that ship has sailed... the money is just getting silly now.

I shall settle for reading this thread with an air of jealousy!

Thanks. I think they are pretty tough old motors but now they are 20 odd years years old it’s easy to spend a lot of money on them even when doing the work yourself. I’ve spent about £800 in the first month of ownership on “bits and bobs” doing everything myself. For me though it’s the reason I bought one of these because I actually like doing stuff on old cars and the money doesn’t really come into it. It’s certainly not an investment anyway!

Got my leather kit from Furniture clinic last week as the seats are looking very tired. I’m not trying to get them perfect but just tidy them up a bit.

Passenger seat which is in better shape than drivers seat!

Had to mask up the Amaretto which was tedious!
Looks better, I’ve not sprayed the sealant on yet or the finisher as they forgot to send the sealant. They were very helpful though and it should be here tomorrow hopefully.

I had no idea you could get the seats back that good looking - that's amazing

That is very impressive. Does the kit come with some sort of filler then? Sand, fill, base cost and clear/sealant? Sounds almost like painting bodywork.

You can get all types of different kits from Furniture clinic. I bought the kit/bundle for heavily cracked leather seats. You get a filler which takes a good few layers to get it looking good. Trick is to put it on thin and build it up and sand it down. Loads of other bottles in the kit. Leather prep which you use to rub down the seats with an abrasive pad. They also supply a small spray gun and propellant can. Quite a few different stages you go through, it’s not a quick job. It’s taken me almost 2 days to do what I’ve done so far and it’s all bolted back in the car. Just got the drivers seat to remove and refurb, once I’ve done that instructions say do not use the seat for 24 hours.
I’m taking it to Deal ( Kent ) classic car show on Saturday so wanted to tidy the interior up before then.

These photos are after I’ve sprayed them with the satin finisher as I didn’t want a glossy finish.

Drivers door check strap hadn’t been working ever since I bought the car. Old one was in about 4 bits!
New one fitted.

Also started to wire in an OBD2 port today. My car is OBD1 but thought I’d convert it to OBD2 so I can read codes off my phone ELM327 Bluetooth module and Torque App.
All I did today was to run a live and earth. Pin 16 live and pin 4 earth. Pin 7 needs a feed from pin B36 on the ECU. Ran out of time today so will finish off maybe tomorrow and see if it works!
Thought I’d run the port into the glovebox. Took the live/earth off of cigarette lighter feeds.

Do you have a Moronic 4.4 ECU fitted? I'm pretty sure the ELM won't communicate with the 4.3

Reason I say this, is my M reg 850 had a 4.3 ecu with OBD port, could only flash codes. Once I fitted my 4.4 ECU I was able to communicate.

It's deathly slow, you'll be lucky to get a refresh rate for all the sensors within 5 seconds.

Should be fine if you only plan to read a few sensors at a time though biggrin
