A cheaper alternative to a full CIC retrofit would be an MMI box; that way you get Carplay/Android auto. Perhaps something to consider as a stop-gap solution...
I had considered it, but the only option I had found that is compatible is this one.https://integratedautomotive.co.uk/product/2005-20...
And that's about half the price of a CIC refit.

I don't mean this to sound argumentative, it's a genuine query, I had a look at pics of an E60 interior, and it looked like there are buttons for the HVAC and there's a volume knob and some stereo type buttons, so what is the iDrive actually used for on a normal journey?
I guess it just surprises me that, although understandably much worse than the newer ones, it can be enough of a nuisance to put you off the car, which to me sounds like it would have to be a regular (say every drive) nuisance?
As I say, not trying to be difficult, just curious. The full extent of my in car tech interaction is to turn the fans up and down or turn the volume up and down
Very valid question, the only thing I'd use the knob for on a regular journey is to change the radio station. Most of the things in the idrive you just set once and forget about it.I guess it just surprises me that, although understandably much worse than the newer ones, it can be enough of a nuisance to put you off the car, which to me sounds like it would have to be a regular (say every drive) nuisance?

I don't really see the point of a CIC upgrade, I would either get something with carplay/android auto, Bluetooth etc or just leave it.

There's nothing wrong as such, but it can take a while to boot up and it sometimes crashes, which requires a hard reset. This is impossible when on the move. You change radio station using the controller or change the sound source as well.I guess it just surprises me that, although understandably much worse than the newer ones, it can be enough of a nuisance to put you off the car, which to me sounds like it would have to be a regular (say every drive) nuisance?

I agree, I do tend to leave it alone, but my FM reception is pathetic so DAB would be nice. My wife and I have differing music tastes in terms of what we stream, but we like the variety we can get from radio. I have a bluetooth unit already installed, but no DAB, and I don't know how good the aftermarket DAB receiver would be.I don't really see the point of a CIC upgrade, I would either get something with carplay/android auto, Bluetooth etc or just leave it.
I've got CCC in my E90 as it's an earlier model but the previous owner upgraded the boot lid and rear lights to the LCI version. I considered doing a CIC upgrade but I'm not sure it's really worth it. Mine doesn't crash and is very rarely slow. I mainly just use the radio and USB input which is perfect for my needs, and the Logic 7 stereo is absolutely brilliant when I'm on the motorway and can't really hear the V8.
Don't let CCC put you off a car, it's a very minor part of the package!
PS you don't need to touch the Idrive to change radio station if you've programmed stations in to the soft-touch buttons.

I'm ok with CCC, especially as you can load a dvd up with music if you don't have USB (I don't even have aux in!). Selecting music is a doddle with the controller and would be a pain with a touch screen.Don't let CCC put you off a car, it's a very minor part of the package!

I also don't use the Nav anymore, mainly as I don't drive anywhere I don't know, but also because I'd most likely use my phone for that anyway.

Yeah, it'll feel bad coming from modern stuff but it's perfectly useable, and like you say, you can stick Android car stuff on quite easily.
TAD, you must have a problem if your radio reception is pants. I'd be looking in to that as a fault rather than wanting to upgrade everything. Radio reception is fine on my car.

I did - I spent £300 on replacing the diversity antenna which fixed my key fob distance but not the FM reception. I can be on a motorway and have no FM reception at all.TAD, you must have a problem if your radio reception is pants. I'd be looking in to that as a fault rather than wanting to upgrade everything. Then there must still be a problem. I've heard making sure the earth strap on the exhaust is still there/working may solve minor issues like this. I'm missing mine though and FM reception is fine, but my rear demister is slow. Hopefully a new strap will help that. Of course I could be wrong!

Rear demist is fine, strap I don't know about as it has an aftermarket exhaust.
The radio doesn't always show available stations either.
TAD, do you think it might be haunted? The radio doesn't always show available stations either.
This weekend saw some work carried out on the car;
4 new vanos solenoids
Oil and filter change
Brake fluid change
While doing the solenoids the garage noticed that one of the wires for the plug is looking a bit kinked so he is ordering a small repair kit to sort that. Also ordering a new coolant hose as one of them is looking a little tired.
A new under tray is being ordered as well as mine is damaged.
Initial thoughts on the solenoid change are that the car feels a bit smoother, but it could be in my head. I'll know more after I take it out for a longer run that doesn't just involve motorway driving.
2 of the old solenoids.
2 of the new ones installed.
Also now just in the process of getting a steering wheel retrimmed in Nappa leather as mine is looking tired.

Who with pal; Royal Steering Wheels?I have a big parcel to send to them in Tuesday; wheel, binnacle cover, gear gaiter, hand breakfast and gaiter and dash insert. All to be black alcantara with stitching to match the leather in my car.
