Kia Stinger GTS 2019
Discussion
Just heard from Kia. Roof seals replaced. Test driven yesterday in the sun, rattle has returned!
They have asked Kia Technical what to do next.
Obviously not happy. I am now asking myself what I will do if this is unresolved?
Put up with it? Fix it myself. Live with the lube twice-a-year approach?
Trouble is, I’m the type of person who needs everything right or it’s going to irritate me.........

With regard to lubing the roof seals, rather than grease have you tried silicone spray? I've used that successfully on sticking/groaning/creaking electric windows before. It's also very low odour, which is a bonus.
Not the point I know, but if you just want it sorted, it might be worth a go.

Thanks Limpet. Yes, the dealer and I have tried grease and silicone on every available surface / seal many times over.
It is not the seals sadly. As evidenced by the fact that they have just replaced all of them and the creak remains.
It is a design issue. Widespread amongst Stinger GTS owners.
I imagine even a completely new sunroof (with all the grief and potential headliner damage etc that might cause) would have a less that 50% probability of solving the issue.
Really disappointing as I love everything else about the car. I have been on AT and PH classifieds for hours today and can’t see anything I would prefer for similar money.......

Thanks Dracoro, yep have seen this and tried it. Mine is quiet once roof opened, so don’t think it is the headlining.
Will try this again anyway when I get the car back.
It is at low speeds due to body flex and on uneven road surfaces up to 20 mph or so.
At speed, no issues. If the roof is wet or cold, no issue. If the car has been sitting in direct sunlight, i.e. hot and roof expanded, it is worse. This eases off once you start moving and the roof cools.
It is completely silent with the roof tilted or fully open.
In short, bearable but irritating depending on your tolerance for such things. And not every car is afflicted, so ensure a lengthy test drive on, ideally, a sunny day.

dunc69 - What roof rack did you get? I ask as will want one when I get a Stinger, would want to share it with wife's car (well, that has rack already but for when we replace with Sorento or Rav4 in a year or so). We already have Kamei (husky I think) roof box.
Does it fit nicely, not damaging car etc.? Would sunroof still open with it on?

Also, audio - I know I can plug in and use CarPlay (I assume not wirelessly?), however I have an SD card on my Golf, does the Stinger have one that can plug in? Or USB stick with music on?
Also, does it stream well from Apple Phone if not plugged using CarPlay? i.e. can you navigate using car rather than phone? The Golf does this BUT only for tracks actually saved on phone, not streaming via Apple Music, Podcasts etc. If I use Phone, it will stream it OK.
Wondered how well this works on the Stinger?

Didn’t risk opening the roof with the bars / box on.

Always use Apple CarPlay connected via cable - obviously also charges phone. Don’t like the charging pad as it makes the phone hot after a while. I streamed Spotify via BT a few times in the early days. It sounds better connected via cable I think.
Can’t remember the SD options..... need to wait until I get the car back!!
Just want the car back now! Last from Kia on Thursday was that the roof lining was off and the sunroof completely dismantled.
They are really keen to find the solution, but some of Kia Technical’s suggestions don’t seem to make sense.... the Master Tech has to follow them though, or they are not covered for their warranty work......
Will update next week. Everything crossed as I’m worried about how well it will all go back together. Be careful what you wish for etc.

Got the Stinger back today. Jeez it felt good after the Stonic loaner. Quiet, smooth, V6 goodness, tunes!
Kia have basically had the headliner off, completely dismantled the roof and rebuilt it. Did something to the welds, re-torqued all bolts, greased the f*%k out of everything and rebuilt the car interior. They have effectively said that they have done all they can do.
It was in direct sunlight when I picked it up. Silent.
A little later I had a creak or two, but very quiet ones - I’m so ridiculously tuned into it.
I think we are at the point where I have to accept that it is what it is now. Regular grease as a maintenance thing.
Car was absolutely filthy (I told them not to clean it). Cleaned it this afternoon. They have managed to scratch the rear bumper. Three inches long. Light, not through the top coat, so hope it will buff out. Might get my detailer to sort it if I can’t (will never prove it happened at the dealer as the car was pretty dirty when it went in).
Otherwise, happy to have it back. Have a 250 mile round trip tomorrow and the same again on Friday, so pleased to have the Stinger back for that!
Will keep you updated re roof....

The Stinger's got a fantastic sunroof - wherever possible I try and find cars with them.
Personally I'd be driving with it open or tilted most of the time but creaks do my head in.
I'd guess gummi pflege type stuff would be what they use on the seals which should all be accessible with the roof open if it's like other pano roofs I've had. Welds suggests the sunroof rails are spot welded into the roof structure somewhere - maybe they've lubed in between the spot welds too, in case the rails were moving as the body flexes.
Still, there's always the umpteen speakers or the V6 as distractions...
I'm spotting a blue 2 litre almost daily now. Still love 'em!
